2 Purpose To present a proposed health and wellness plan that complements the District s Vision 2016 academic strategic plan, because a healthier child is a better learner.
3 20+ years of wellness partnership 1992: Charleston County Medical Society (CCMS) and MUSC began supporting CCSD school health needs. 2005: CCMS and MUSC school partnership focus shifted to nutrition and fitness, in response to the 2005 SC Student Health and Fitness Act. 2010: Superintendent launches a district wellness initiative 2012: More than 50 community partners are supporting the Superintendent s Wellness Initiative throughout the CCSD.
4 THE NEED: SC is the 8 TH FATTEST STATE >30% of children and adolescents and >60% of adults in SC are overweight/obese Childhood obesity is one of 4 state priority initiatives for the Joint Citizens and Legislative Committee on Children
5 We are currently educating the first generation of students who may NOT outlive their parents!
