4 Background and context Introduction of the Bologna process is expected soon in nursing education, A nursing departement was created in our national school of public health (Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Santé Publique ), EBP concept was introduced by our health authority (Haute Autorité de Santé), Nursing research is identified as a nursing activity and is included in diploma and post diploma curriculums, One nursing research publication available in french, Nursing research, research utilisation and EBN are underdevelopped, Many nurses hold bachelor and masters degrees in various disciplines. 4

11 Nursing: a profession, a discipline and a science Our assignment as a practice discipline is to develop appropriate nursing interventions to change a non desirable situation into a more desirable one, Various cognitive resources are needed by 11 clinicians.

12 What are the characteristics of nursing science? Epistemological diversity: Multiple paradigms, Multiple theoretical frameworks, Multiple approaches to research methodologies, including mixed methods. Need to develop more systematic reviews and meta analysis, Some controversies remain regarding how to define an evidence in nursing. 12

23 From swot analysis to vision development Developing research capacity is a moral imperative, Positive outcomes are expected: For the population, For the healthcare system, For the nursing profession, For the nursing science. Those outcomes could not be achieved without supporting structures and process. The academic profile seems more appropriate, The taught doctorate seems a good option. 23

25 From strategy to actions An academy of nursing science was created in 2007, We promote the development of specialised nursing societies, France is now an active member of WENR, Our national health autority (HAS) was approached regarding EBN implementation, We launched a project aimed to identify the nursing research priorities. 25

26 Preliminary results New nursing research societies are emerging, A position statment regarding Bologna process implementation in nursing education was endorsed by nursing organisations and unions, We prepare a Delphi study to indentify our research priorities, We prepare learning materials regarding to nursing research, nursing science and 26 EBN t

27 Aeras of uncertainty Recognition of nursing science as an academic discipline, Deadline for the implementation of the first doctoral programme in EHESP, Functional links between bachelor, masters and doctoral programmes. 27

28 To conclude... Having the impression of being late is sometimes difficult, International networks and sharing of knowledge represent valuable ressources and are really helpful at national level. 28
