Office hours may also include synchronous online meetings for student s learning and serving as a resource person to guide the student in the learning process. 2 1.0 Course Overview and Description This Health Assessment Course introduces the concepts and techniques of health and cultural assessment of individuals and families across the life span, for use with the nursing process. Emphasis is on history/data collection and critical analysis in situations of health and deviations from health. Practical experiences enable students practice of clinical assessment skills, analysis, and decisionmaking for nursing practice. Pre- or co-requisite: NURK 300 (3) 2.0 Course Objective: By the end of this course the student will be able to demonstrate an adult physical assessment using designated criteria and document the results. 2.1 Student Learning Outcomes 1. Apply concepts of communication theories in conducting a physical assessment interview. 2. Demonstrate comprehensive knowledge of health assessment and the appropriate skills in assessing health status of children and adults of all ages. 3. Utilize the components of the nursing process to assist individuals/families to obtain/maintain optimal health. 4. Use appropriate nursing role behaviors in assessing an individual. 5. General Survey: A. Overview inspection-introduction, Communication with Pt. Establish rapport. B. Preparation for Exam-All equipment available II. Neurological Function-LOC, Cranial Nerves, GCS, & VS III. Head and Neck-palpate head & neck nodes, near & far vision, pupils, external ear exam, nose, throat IV. Respiratory System Chest-respirations, palpate axillary nodes, auscultate lungs (26 areas) V. Cardiovascular System- pulses, heart tones auscultate(4 areas) VI. Abdomen-auscultate 4 quadrants, light and deep palpation 4 quadrants, palpate for liver, spleen, kidneys VII. Musculoskeletal system-includes gait, strength, upper & lower extremities, note ease of movement VIII. Integumentary-overall inspection, presence of lesions IX. You will also need a headset with a microphone or speakers and a microphone to be able to listen to online resources and conduct other activities in the course. 8 orientation course. The new Blackboard is a brand-new interface and you will have to come up to speed with it really quickly. This orientation course will help you get there. There is also a link to Blackboard Help from inside the course on the left-hand menubar. The first week of the course includes activities and assignments that will help you get up to speed with navigation, sending and receiving messages and discussion posts, and submitting an assignment. Your ability to function within the Blackboard system will facilitate your success in this course. 10 COURSE AND UNIVERSITY PROCEDURES AND POLICIES 9.0 Drop Policy If you discover that you need to drop this class, you must go to the Records Office and ask for the necessary paperwork. Professors cannot drop students; this is always the responsibility of the student. The record s office will provide a deadline for which the form must be returned, completed and signed. Once you return the signed form to the records office and wait 24 hours, you must go into Duck Trax and confirm that you are no longer enrolled. Should you still be enrolled, FOLLOW-UP with the records office immediately? You are to attend class until the procedure is complete to avoid penalty for absence. 11 13.0 Library Services NURK 307 Fall 2014 Library distance education services aims to make available quality assistance to A&M- Central Texas students seeking information sources remotely by providing digital reference, online information literacy tutorials, and digital research materials. Much of the A&M-CT collection is available instantly from home. This includes over half of the library's book collection, as well as approximately 25,000 electronic journals and 200 online databases. Library Distance Education Services are outlined and accessed at: Information literacy focuses on research skills which prepare individuals to live and work in an information-centered society. Librarians will work with students in the development of critical reasoning, ethical use of information, and the appropriate use of secondary research techniques. Help may include, but is not limited to: the exploration of information resources such as library collections, the identification of appropriate materials, and the execution of effective search strategies. Follow instructions carefully, using rubrics provided will assure you have mastered the content. 3. You will need to have your textbook for the first class day The Operation of the Online Course and Being an Online Student Online learning requires students to be very self-disciplined. For this course, Friday will be considered the class day. Assignments, discussion assignments, and quizzes will be posted on or before each Friday, and will be due by midnight (2400) the following Thursday. Points may be taken off for late submissions. Since this is a three semester credit hour course, expect to spend at least three hours a week on your computer and reading. Study time and time for assignment completion will be in addition to that time. The course should be accessed at least 3-4 times a week. Quizzes for this course are used as learnings more than testing knowledge. You will have an unlimited amount of time to complete, but only one attempt. So, plan ahead, complete the readings first, and set aside time to complete the quiz. This assessment course is a step above what you probably had in your Associates program. The course is not designed to be on the level of an independent nurse practitioner, but somewhere in between. The final assessment will be more involved than an inpatient daily assessment, but will not be as detailed as a nurse practitioner exam. There is a guide of areas to be covered in this syllabus.
