2 Why Get a U.S. LL.M. Degree? Factors to Consider In today s global environment, lawyers must be familiar with multiple legal systems, and especially the common law. International transactions often involve U.S. participants or aspects of the U.S. legal system or regulations. In many areas of law, U.S. law influences legal developments in other countries Spending a year in the U.S. offers the opportunity to become familiar with U.S. law and culture, and to reflect more deeply on one s own system and traditions.

3 U.S. Legal Education Over 190 law schools located throughout the U.S. The first law degree for U.S. students is the J.D. degree, which requires three years of post-graduate study. Many U.S. law schools also offer LL.M. degree programs for foreign attorneys. These programs vary widely in terms of size, structure, location, course offerings and selectivity.

17 In students own words: Choosing to study at Georgetown was almost a foregone conclusion given that I wanted to learn about policy and the law with a focus on international law. It was also important to me that my LL.M. experience involve subject areas other than pure corporate finance, I wanted to explore how corporate law interacted with trade law and environment law and how it could be harnessed to meet development needs and increase global participation for countries like mine.

18 I like all my classes and professors. I selected a wide variety of classes and each has its own unique qualities -- there is no way to compare them. It is often the case that one can pick a favorite class. But I think that is what sets my experience here apart from the rest. It is just impossible to choose one. [A]ll my professors are renowned experts in their field of study.

19 I had no doubts when I chose Georgetown University Law Center for my LL.M. studies. As we started out first semester at GULC, my confidence that I made the right choice became stronger. I have been overwhelmed by the fact that I I have been overwhelmed by the fact that I am meeting the best of the best in all the fields of law I consider important, global health, trade, and environment.
