3 Associate of Science Nursing The nursing program is designed to prepare the graduate to take the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses (NCLEX-RN) and enter a career as a beginning practitioner of nursing. Employment opportunities are at an all-time high in West Virginia and nationwide. Registered nurses constitute the largest healthcare occupation, with. million jobs. More new jobs are expected to be created for registered nurses than for any other occupation. The practice of nursing is regulated in each state. The nursing law of West Virginia addresses criteria for application for licensure. The West Virginia Board of Examiners for Registered Professional Nurses has the power to deny opportunity to procure licenses through testing if the applicant has willfully committed a felony under the laws of West Virginia. Students considering entry to the nursing program must meet general college admission requirements and complete an academically rigorous set of pre-requisite courses before applying for separate admission to the nursing program. Admission to the nursing program is limited to students in the fall or spring semester and is highly competitive. Admission requirements for the nursing program include an overall GPA of.0 or better, completion of all pre-requisite courses with a grade of C or better, and completion of the Test for Essential Academic Skills (TEAS) with a composite score of at least 7.8%. Candidates are scored by how much they exceed the entry requirements. The candidates with the highest scores are offered admission. Nursing courses provide classroom, laboratory, and direct patient care learning experiences in local hospitals and other healthcare agencies. Once admitted to the program students are required to obtain and maintain American Heart Association CPR for Health Care Providers, have a physical examination to ensure they meet the technical standards for the challenges of providing patient care, provide proof of current immunization status and be free of active tuberculosis disease. Clinical courses take place between the hours of 7:00 A.M. and 11:00 P.M., seven days a week. Nursing students must have reliable transportation and childcare to meet the expectations of the program. Uniforms and skills equipment purchase is required for this program. The ASN program is fully accredited by the West Virginia Board of Examiners for Registered Professional Nurses. The Board was established by the West Virginia Legislature to promote and protect public health, safety, and welfare through the regulation of registered professional nurses and dialysis technicians. West Virginia Board of Examiners for Registered Professional Nurses 101 Dee Drive, Charleston, WV 11 Telephone: (0) rnboard@state.wv.us Website: The ASN program is accredited through 00 by the National League for Nursing Accreditation Commission (NLNAC).
