8 FSC s response: beyond legality towards sustainability! Timber Legality legislation is important! Can help reducing deforestation, poor labour conditions, violation of indigenous rights, robbing of national resources, corruption of enforcement agents. But will only bring sustainable forestry if national laws so require. FSC forest management standards go always beyond the legal requirements and generate an important contribution to sustainability. Legality requirement will make it easier to make the step to certification: less/no competition with cheap illegal timber anymore. A legal timber claim is no marketing opportunity, but FSC does. FSC offers the Legality+ solution: legality plus environmental, social and economic sustainability criteria. 13 Conclusions for operators buying FSC materials 1. Can use FSC Advice Notes and, later, the OCP for access to information required for DDS. 2. Can claim with Competent Authorities that certified products, including Controlled Wood products, are duly checked in FSC s scheme by Certification Bodies, as well FSC s own risk assessments. 3.
