1 MCS Medical Cleaning Station Unpacking, Set-up & Operation Instructions 1. Uncrating the MCS Unit 1.1. Unscrew the (1) removable crate top and (1) crate panel marked FRONT OPEN THIS SIDE then set them off to the side. Carefully unload the loose items (if any) packed above and underneath the bench-top. Unscrew and remove the (2) 2 x 4 blocks with foam that hold the bench down in the crate. Unlock the swivel casters for the bench and slide it out of the crate. It is heavy so be sure to have help with this For double sided units the top hood is bubble wrapped and lowered to rest on the work surface and bottom hood assembly to eliminate possible damage during shipping. Loosen the silver lever handle located to the right side and back end of the top hood, which is currently oriented at the 5:00 o clock (locked) position, counter-clockwise past the 12:00 o clock position. Loosen the small black knob at the nose (front) of the hood, which secures the front clear plastic air baffle. Grab the now loosened black knob at the nose of the hood and gently lift it up while turning the black-hand wheel atop the vertical height adjustment column clockwise to raise to raise the hood a few inches Carefully remove the stretch wrap and bubble wrap from the top hood assembly. DO NOT USE A KNIFE OR SHARP OBJECT TO REMOVE PACKAGING MATERIALS FROM THE HOOD. A SCRATCH IN THE STAINLESS STEEL IS NOT EASILY REMOVED OR REPAIRED In some cases the white metal bin rail with compressed air regulator(s) and power strip has to be demounted from the uprights above the work surface to fit in the crate and/or to fit through a standard 3-0 doorway. It will be wrapped in bubble wrap (or similar) to protect it and other components during shipment. Carefully remove the bubble wrap from the rail, lay the bubble wrap on the work surface to protect it and rest the rail on the bubble wrap AFTER you have moved the system to the area where it is to be setup Open the lower front access door of the VQM5xxx dust collector (may ship in separate crate) and remove the instruction manuals and accessories that have been placed in dust drawer for shipping before plugging the system in for operation. 2 2. Installing the MCS Station 2.1. Locate and position the system where it is to be used, near electrical receptacles and a compressed air supply, if possible. If electrical outlet(s) and a compressed air supply are not present, you will need to install them to tie the system in and set it up for operation VERY IMPORTANT be sure to bring all components inside the room or space where it is to be used prior to assembly. If the system includes a Laminar Flow System it will usually be too large or tall to get through a regular doorway after it is assembled! 2.2. Install the (2) uprights Measure 12 (+/- 1/16 ) down from the top of the work surface at the back of the (2) rear legs; mark both legs with a pencil line; align the top of a small wooden block to each line then firmly clamp to each leg (see picture) Loosen the (2) bolts with strut-nuts at each of the (2) legs so there is ½ between the leg and the backside of the strut-nuts as shown Orient the strut-nuts vertically to insert into the open side of the upright struts (see pics); gently sit the uprights on top of the wooden block and over the strut-nuts. By hand, turn the bolts clockwise so that the strut-nuts rotate 90 degrees and engage both sides of the upright (see pics). Once the strut-nuts are properly oriented and engaging the upright struts on both sides, tighten securely with a 9/16 socket or wrench Install the bin rail with electrical power strip Per item 1.4 above, remove bubble wrap from the 4 high bin-rail with (1 or 2) compressed air regulators (with gages) and power strip installed; loosen the bolt with strut-nut at each end of the bin rail so there is ½ between the rail and strut-nuts MCS-IOM,Linear Adjust w-o LFS,General, of 7

3 Place the bin rail carefully on the work surface, just inside the uprights with the electrical power strip to the left, the (1 or 2) regulators (with gage) to the right and so that the 90 degree bend along the long edge of the rail is at the top; insert the strut-nuts into the uprights as shown Tighten the (2) 9/16 hex bolts at each upright, turning the bolts clockwise so that the strut-nuts engage both sides of the upright (see picture). Once the strut-nuts are properly oriented and engaging the upright strut on both sides, tighten securely with a ratchet or wrench Note: the uprights can be easily raised or lowered by loosening the (2) 9/16 hex bolts at each back bench leg. Leaving the uprights higher than the bin rail gives you the option to mount additional accessories such as bin rails that can be used to hold plastic Acro Mills (or similar) bins for parts storage or work shelves over the work surface. Call the factory for more info on available accessories Install the air regulators (with gage) and airlines insert the ASRG38 regulator(s) with gage through the back of the rail; be sure the small plastic nub at the 3:00 o'clock position (as viewed from the front) nests into the small notch in the rail; install (1) large round plastic nut onto the regulator at the front of the rail as shown; hand-tighten (do not use a wrench/tool) insert the airline(s) from the up-facing right (output) elbow at ASF38C compressed air filtration system(s), typically mounted on the back of the dust collector beneath the work surface, into the MCS-IOM,Linear Adjust w-o LFS,General, of 7

4 down-facing left (input) elbow at ASRG38 regulator(s), matching the labels with lettermarkings on the airlines to the fittings as shown Insert the airlines coming from the stainless steel air tubes, mounted on the stainless steel vacuum hood(s), into the down-facing right (output) port fitting (you may have to rotate the swivel fitting) as shown, matching the labels with letter-markings on the airlines to the fittings as shown 2.5. Plumb CDA (clean, dry compressed air) into the (1 or 2) compressed air filtration systems beneath the work surface, using a 3/8 OD airline connected to the 3/8 push-in elbow fitting provided. You may elect to use a QD (quick disconnect) type air fitting - i.e. a type M male 3/8 NPTF to QD or similar for quick and easy connection, which also makes it very easy to disconnect the system so it can be rolled to another location for quick set-up and use. We recommend that the main airline(s) feeding each air filtration system have an i.d. (inside diameter) of 3/8, transitioning to a 3/8 OD within a few feet of the system for connection to the filtration system, to insure sufficient airflow to the system(s). Make sure that the red valve, located at the output end of the compressed air filtration system(s), is in the closed position during installation 2.6. Note; this step only applies to the larger beige model VQM5005 or VQM5012 dust collectors with 3-phase motors. The model VQM5003 collector, the small white unit that fits underneath the work surface, is a single phase unit with a motor starter switch included. If your system includes the VQM5003 collector, skip ahead to step Install a motor starter that will thermally protect the model VQMxxx dust collector per the full load amperage in table #1 below. For example; if you have a model VQM5005, 50Hz unit and connect it to 380V, 50HZ, 3PH power, it will use 2.5 amps (full load) and 20 amps for an initial draw. The motor starter must be properly sized per this rating. A qualified electrician should install the motor starter and connect the dust collector to a 3-phase power source. Refer to the dust collector manual (included with the system) for further details. MCS-IOM,Linear Adjust w-o LFS,General, of 7

The motor starter must have a magnetic starter with overload protection to match the motor nameplate, per the line voltage and frequency supplied, and be sized, wired and installed per local electrical codes and best practices. Refer to the motor starter manufacturers recommendations to insure compatibility, sizing and proper installation. 4) model VQM5003(H) includes a motor reset/start switch with 6' cord and US male 3 prong plug 5) motors can operate within 10% of rated voltages 2.7. Plug the multi-outlet electric power strip cord (included with the system) into the proper electrical outlet that matches the electrical spec of the system; i.e. either a 115V, 60Hz, single phase or a 230V, 50/60Hz, single-phase 15-amp (minimum) wall receptacle that is properly grounded and wired per local electrical code and specs. Turn the switch OFF Plug the (1 or 2) cords from the TSN70 (or similar) power supplies for static bars, mounted underneath the work surface, and the (1) power cord from the dust collector into the power strip. Be sure the switches on the power supplies and dust collector are in the on position, leaving the power strip is in the off position Adjust the height of the bench for comfort by turning the black hand-crank located at the front, right end of the bench. The bench can be adjusted from its lowest setting of 37 ½ up to 49 ½. Turning the crank clockwise will raise the bench; counterclockwise will lower it. MCS-IOM,Linear Adjust w-o LFS,General, of 7

6 3. Setting up the MCS Station for operation 3.1. Determine the height, or thickness, of the part to be cleaned using the MCS system. Adjust the height of the upper hood assembly to be at least ¼, but not more than ¾ above the highest surface of the part to be cleaned. Loosen the silver lever handle located to the right side and back end of the top hood, which is currently oriented at the 5:00 o clock (locked) position, counter-clockwise past the 12:00 o clock position. Loosen the small black knob at the nose (front) of the hood, which secures the front clear plastic air baffle. Grab the now loosened black knob at the nose of the hood and gently lift it up while turning the blackhand wheel atop the vertical height adjustment column clockwise to raise the hood, or counter-clockwise to lower the hood as needed. Tighten the silver lever at the rear of the hood, and then snug the black knob at the front clear baffle to complete the height adjustment Note; If needed, the lever handle can be re-oriented by pulling the lever directly toward you while pushing on the black button socket head with your thumb, disengaging the lever from the grooves in the bolt and allowing it to be freely rotated. Rotate the lever to the desired position and release. The internal spring will draw the lever into the grooves on the bolt to re-engage it Turn the electric power strip ON ; turn the switch to the model TSN70 power supply for static bar(s) to the on position. You will hear a faint buzzing sound coming from the static bars, which is normal Turn the switch to the dust collector to the on position. You will hear the collector motor and suction being generated at the top and/or bottom hood vacuum slot(s) VERY IMPORTANT NOTE: the collector motor can rotate backwards depending on the phasing of power coming into your facility. The magnahelic gage should read between 0.5 to 1.0 of water column (static pressure) when the unit is turned on and you should hear and feel very good airflow at the vacuum slots of both hoods. If the gage reads near zero, it sounds too quiet and you don t feel good flow at the hoods, the motor is spinning backwards. Turn the unit off, unplug it and refer to directions in the collector manual and/or the wiring diagram on the internal collector motor for instructions on how to change the wiring on the motor junction box to reverse the motor direction. Call for assistance if needed Turn the valve to each compressed air filtration system, located on the back of the VQM5003(H) collector or on a mounting plate beneath the work surface, to the on position. Turn the regulator adjustment knob clockwise or counterclockwise until the desired air pressure is displayed in the pressure gage. You will hear compressed air coming from the stainless steel air tubes located along both sides of the hood vacuum slot(s). We recommend setting the air pressure to approx. 5 to 10psi for the initial cleaning of parts You are now ready to feed parts through the cleaning zone of the MCS station. 7 4. Operation of the MCS Station 4.1. Pass a part at a controlled rate of speed from either right to left, or left to right, through the cleaning zone between the upper and lower vacuum hood with static bars and stainless steel compressed air tubes. If possible, orient the part inverted, with the open side downfacing, so that gravity will aid in cleaning the part(s), allowing contaminants to fall into the vacuum slot. Be careful that the part is centered on the vacuum slot of the hood from front to back to insure all of the surface area of the part is exposed to the ionization, compressed air blow-off and vacuum suction for best results. It should take approx. 2 full seconds to pass most parts through the cleaning zone of the MCS Station. More time may be needed for extremely long parts i.e. blisters/cards for long catheters. It is strongly recommended that one end of the station is established as the preclean end and the other as the post-clean end so that contaminants are kept to one end of the system to minimize recontamination of parts after cleaning them Adjust the air pressure to the air tubes as needed, which can easily be done by turning the regulator knob(s), up to house pressure if necessary, until optimal results are achieved. 5. Troubleshooting Problem = too much suction at the hood vacuum slot(s) Solution = you can install a 3 slide gate valve (included and shipped loose in the dust drawer of the collector) at each of the inlet ports of the model VQM5003(H) collector. This will allow you to damper down the airflow to the hood(s) to give you control over the suction. In most cases, it is not necessary to utilize the slide gate valve(s); even they are included with the system. Problem = No air pressure at air tubes Solution = make sure the valve at the compressed air filtration system(s) is in the on position; make sure the knob at the filter / regulator is turned clockwise to allow air through.
