2 Leading the way in healthcare I want to extend a warm welcome to you from my colleagues and I here in Health Sciences. As Dean, and closely engaged with developing policy for healthcare in the field of cancer care, I hope what you will find here in Southampton is the kind of academic environment that I have sought out to support my own career development. I am best-known for developing a new approach to managing the symptoms of breathlessness in advanced lung cancer by helping people to use breathing control techniques and overcome the fear associated with breathlessness. This non-drug therapy allows people to manage the problem themselves. I demonstrated that it was effective and it is now used across the healthcare service. We have, in establishing Health Sciences, developed a world-class academic environment which focuses on the improvement of health outcomes and the transformation of health care delivery. Our students are increasingly from beyond the UK making us one in which an international outlook on global issues of health and healthcare is encouraged and an exciting environment in which to study and socialise. Our education benefits from close partnership with practice settings and clinical leaders who enjoy joint appointments with us. I am passionate about continuing to change the experience of healthcare for people needing care: to address needs more personally and to give patients more power over their health. Jessica Corner, Dean of Health Sciences. In her early years Jessica trained as a cancer nurse. Her external roles now include Chief Clinician at the charity Macmillan Cancer Support, where she advises on the charity s on going direction, vision and strategy. 3 Enhancing lives affected by cancer The work of the Cancer, Palliative and End-of-Life Care Research Group aims to enhance the lives and healthcare experiences of people affected by cancer, other life-limiting conditions and those at the end of life. By improving understanding of patient experiences and needs, developing interventions to address current or perceived future challenges and investigating the service delivery and organisation of healthcare in this field, their research is influencing policy makers and healthcare professionals involved in care delivery, and ultimately the lives of a large number of patients in the UK and beyond. The group includes nurses, medical sociologists, health psychologists, anthropologists and many others. Projects have included developing interventions for distress caused by weight loss at the end of life, techniques to help patients with lung cancer deal with breathlessness, a study of the best ways to organise out of hours service for those near the end of life, a study of joint pain and stiffness amongst people with breast cancer and interventions for fatigue in patients receiving chemotherapy. There are several elements the team most enjoy about their work, there is the intellectual challenge, to find the answers to the complex problems patients and their families have to deal with takes a multidisciplinary approach from the good mix of expertise in the group. Then there is the impact the group have, potentially helping hundreds of thousands of people through the findings of each study. People often assume the teams work is depressing but it is considered a privilege to make a difference to people who are often at the end of their lives, members of the team who meet with patients find they are a complete joy. It is often a relief for the patients to find someone who wants to talk about their experiences, as most people don t want to talk about death and dying with them. The new MSc Clinical Leadership in Cancer, Palliative and End of Life Care includes the study of specialist practice, policy and service design and international and contemporary perspectives. on this course can be found on P26, details of our Cancer, Palliative and End of Life Care research can be found on our website: groups/cpelc/index.html 6 7

5 Programmes and study opportunities Our programmes are designed to foster the development of expertise in clinical practice in a variety of specialities and understanding of global health concerns. Where do I start? Taking a single module (20 or 40 credits) gives you an ideal opportunity to experience academic study. Modules are usually selected in consultation with your manager, considering both work place and individual needs. If you intend to take one of the part-time degrees it may be worth taking one or two modules before you register as up to 40 credits can be transferred on registration to a programme. To help prepare you for academic study we offer an optional study skills module, advancing independent learning (NQCG2021: level 5). Learning materials are available electronically through the University of Southampton website. The programmes are broken into core, required and optional modules. Core modules must be taken as part of the requirement for the qualification. Required modules will be necessary to complete set pathways. Optional modules may be selected from a range of modules, in consultation with the programme leader and/or clinical manager. Most modules require attendance at study days and a set number of study hours, but others involve learning online. For most students some of the learning will be in practice and you are expected to undertake personal study and assignment preparation. A significant amount of learning for a module is achieved through completion of the assignment. For modules studied at a distance, tutorial support will be provided online.
