1 Office of Programs and Academic Assessment (MC 103) 2630 University Hall 601 South Morgan Street Chicago, IL February 24, 2014 TO: FROM: Ilene Harris, Chair Senate Committee on Educational Policy Dana Wright, Director for Academic Program Development I am submitting for the information of the Senate Committee on Educational Policy the attached Proposal to Revise the Proposed Bachelor of Arts in Music Business. The proposal to establish the degree was approved by SCEP on November 7, 2013 and the UIC Senate on December 4, Further it was classified by the University Senates Conference on January 28, 2014 and has been submitted to the Board of Trustees for their action on March 6, This proposal to revise the proposed degree is being submitted in order to amend the original proposal in advance of its review by the Illinois Board of Higher Education - which is anticipated in June The revision is necessary to adjust the total hours required for the degree as a result of the increase in credit hours to ECON 120 and ECON 121 one of which must be completed as a degree requirement. ATTACHMENT
2 Title Proposal to Revise the Proposed Bachelor of Arts in Music Business Sponsor Department of Music Executive Summary The Department of Music within the School of Theatre and Music, College of Architecture, Design, and the Arts has proposed the establishment of a new undergraduate degree the Bachelor of Arts in Music Business. The proposal was reviewed and approved by the Senate Committee on Educational Policy on November 7, 2013 and the UIC Senate on December 4, Further it was classified by the University Senates Conference on January 28, 2014 and has been submitted to the Board of Trustees for their action on March 6, After the proposal s approval by the UIC Senate, the Department of Music was informed that the credit hours of ECON 120: Principles of Microeconomics and ECON 121: Principles of Macroeconomics would be increased from 3 to 4 hours effective Fall As students in the proposed BA in Music Business must complete one of these courses as part of the degree requirements, the department proposes to modify the degree requirements as follows: (1) Currently the BA requires hours comprised of: hours of General and Basic Education Requirements; hours in Major Course Requirements; 0-2 hours of electives; and 1 hour of CC 120 (for first year students only). (2) The change in ECON 120/121 will result in a change to: a. the total hours required for the degree (to ); b. the hours of General and Basic Education (to 27-29); c. the hours of electives (to 0-1). (3) The hours of Major Course Requirements will not be impacted, nor will the 1 hour of CC 120 for first year students. Background The Department of Music within the School of Theatre and Music, College of Architecture, Design, and the Arts has proposed the establishment of a new undergraduate degree the Bachelor of Arts in Music Business.
3 (2) The change in ECON 120/121 will result in a change to: a. the total hours required for the degree (to ); b. the hours of General and Basic Education (to 27-29); c. the hours of electives (to 0-1). (3) The hours of Major Course Requirements will not be impacted, nor will the 1 hour of CC 120 for first year students. Most significantly, students will still be able to complete the degree in 120 hours. Justification The proposed revision should be acknowledged for the following reasons. First, the change in hours (and method of instruction) to ECON 120 and ECON 121 was a change initiated by a collaborating department. Had the change been confirmed prior to the submission of the original proposal, Music would have happily made the adjustment to the proposed requirements. Music believes the change will be advantageous for their students and fully supports the adjustment in total degree hours. Further, because the total hours required for the degree is variable instead of fixed, it is possible for students based upon their choice of General Education courses, required and selective courses to earn more than 120 hours. However, students are still able to complete the degree in 120 hours. So while the outcome of the revision is a change in total hours for the degree, Music feels it is a reasonable increase (since no additional courses are being added) and the change will only impact some degree students depending on their course selection. Catalog Copy See attached Minority Impact Statement The increase in total hours is not anticipated to have a negative impact on any students. As the increase in credit hour to ECON 120/121 will provide students with the opportunity to learn about economics in both a lecture and discussion environment, Music Business students will have an increased opportunity to ask questions and consider how to adapt economics principles to the very specific application of their discipline. Budgetary and Staff Implication None as the course driving the revision is offered by another department. Library Support None as the courses required for the BA in Music Business remain the same. Unit Approvals Approval of Head, Department of Music Michael J. Anderson and endorsement of Milagros Crespo, Assistant Dean of Students, CADA Proposed Effective Term Revision should be incorporated into the proposal prior to submission to the IBHE and pending their approval be included within the catalog statement for the degree.
