1 GRANVILLE ONLINE MIDDLE SCHOOL REGISTRATION CATALOG SUMMER 2014 Granville Online is Granville County s personalized online learning program. Started as a high school credit recovery program, it has grown to serve students in grades The main goal of Granville Online is to meet students where they are ready to learn. The flexible program allows options for students who may not otherwise be able to fit into the traditional school model. In addition to serving these students, GO is able to increase access to electives and alternative areas of study for all students. Use this catalog to see what we have to offer for high school students during the Fall 2013 semester. If you are interested in learning with us, please register at For specific questions about registering for online classes, please us at granvilleonline@gcs.k12.nc.us You can also call and ask for: Bettie Lou Boyd, GO Student Information Data Manager for registration questions Stephanie Suber, GO Program Coordinator for general questions
2 MIDDLE SCHOOL COURSES AT A GLANCE MIDDLE SCHOOL ELECTIVES American Indian Studies (grades 7 & 8) The Bible and Its Influence on Literature (grades 7 & 8) Exploring Life Skills (grades 6 & 7) Patterns of Change (grades 6-8) Science in the News (grades 6-8) MIDDLE SCHOOL FOR HIGH SCHOOL CREDIT While the courses listed below count as electives at the Middle School level, students that take them will receive High School credit for them. These courses will appear on a student s high school transcript, although they will not be counted in high school GPA measurements. Additionally, these courses will count toward all NC 4-year University qualification standards. Students that choose to take these courses should realize that they are taking RIGOROUS AND CHALLENGING courses with a HIGH SCHOOL LEVEL curriculum. These courses will require EXTRA TIME AT HOME, as they are built based on the 90- minute per day schedule high schools follow, which is not an allotted amount of time available in most GCS middle schools. Therefore, it is VERY important that students choosing these courses be dedicated and have reliable access to a computer and Internet at home. 3 MIDDLE SCHOOL CREDIT COURSES American Indian Studies Recommended for seventh and eighth grade students, American Indian Studies is a Middle School elective that introduces students to the diverse history and culture of American Indians, beginning with life prior to Columbus. Important issues American Indians have faced from prehistoric societies to present-day contemporary society are discussed. Students immerse themselves in America's oldest and continuous civilizations and cultures with a focus on American Indians of North Carolina. The Bible and Its Influence on Literature This Middle School elective is recommended for seventh and eighth grade students. In addition to demonstrating the literary qualities of the Bible, this course is an academic study of selected narratives, characters, and poetry from the Hebrew Scriptures (The Old Testament) and provides a basic overview of the New Testament. Students will also explore how a basic knowledge of the characters and themes of the Bible are important to understanding Western literature. An additional feature of the course is discussion of the impact various translations of the Bible have had on the English language itself. Exploring Life Skills Recommended for sixth or seventh grade students, this middle school elective allows students to explore life skills essential for their roles as managers, consumers, workers, and family members both now and in the future. Areas of study include managing resources, relating with others, making healthy food choices, learning about children, and preparing for careers. Art, mathematics, and science are reinforced. Patterns of Change Recommended for sixth-eighth grade students, this class will give students an opportunity to learn about literature in a variety of ways. It will incorporate music, art, and other media spectrums to examine literatures and writings. Science in the News Recommended for seventh and eighth grade students, Science in the News is a Middle School elective that is designed to stimulate students reading and evaluation of current hot science topics in the news through actively producing media products, such as news clips and videos. Using science literacy as the main focus, students will make connections between different scientific disciplines and explore science in the real world while practicing reading and thinking like a scientist. Students will take on the role of reporter, researching and verifying information to produce storyboards, news clips, podcasts, and other media demonstrating their ability to read and comprehend technical text.
4 HIGH SCHOOL CREDIT COURSES Earth Science Available only to eighth grade students, Earth and Environmental Science focuses on the Earth s place within the Universe and the Earth s systems, structures and processes. Topics of inquiry include: the Earth s role as a body in space; processes and forces of the Earth s surface; humanity s impact on the Earth; the importance of water to the Earth; functions of the atmosphere; how the biosphere is created and changes; and patterns of global climate change over time. Math I Available only to eighth grade students, this course will require students to create, solve and graph equations, inequalities, and systems of equations. Students will make judgments about appropriateness of linear models and use a formal means of assessing how models fit data. In this course, students will be introduced to quadratic and exponential functions. Rational exponents and descriptive statistics will be studied. Graphing calculators will be used. (TI-84+ is the recommended graphing calculator) World History Available only to eighth grade students, this course addresses six periods in the study of World History, with a key focus of study from the mid 15th century to present. Students taking this course will study major turning points that shaped the modern world and should already have a firm foundation in the themes and tools of geography and early, ancient and classical civilizations from their K-8 experience.
5 HIGH SCHOOL CREDIT COURSES Spanish I Available only to eighth grade students, Spanish I is a rigorous introduction to the foreign language that gives students the opportunity to be introduced to reading, writing, listening, and speaking abilities in Spanish. The course also allows students to begin exploration of contemporary issues and developments in the Spanish- speaking world. Spanish II Available only to eighth grade students, Spanish II allows students to continue their focus on reading, writing, listening, and speaking abilities in Spanish. Contemporary issues and developments continue to be studied through a research and critical-thinking lens. American Sign Language I Available only to eighth grade students, American Sign Language I is a NC DPI approved elective. Students will learn basic ASL communication. Course includes sign vocabulary, fingerspelling, numbers, expressive and receptive signing activities. Students will learn the history of ASL and become knowledgeable with the aspects of Deaf Culture. During this course students will learn about assistive technology for Deaf and Hard of Hearing students. ASL, level 1, is designed to give students a general understanding of signed communication. American Sign Language II Available only to eighth grade students, American Sign Language is a continuation of ASL I. In this course, students will build on their ASL vocabulary, grammar, and awareness of Deaf culture. ASL II is designed to expand fluency in expressive signing and confidence in receptive skills.
