1 MODULE SPECIFICATION KEY FACTS Module name Evidence for Practice Module code NMM086 School School of Health Sciences Department or equivalent Division of Health Services Research and Management UK credits 15 ECTS 15 Level 7 MODULE SUMMARY Module outline and aims This module will provide you with an overview of current issues in public health and community nursing. It will enable you to develop the skills to design, deliver and evaluate effective services that meet the changing requirements needs of changing populations needs. You will consider the application of current policy best practice guidelines, research evidence and theory that underpin public health and community nursing activity and develop strategies to help you to apply these in contemporary practice. The module will allow health visiting, school nursing and district nursing students to study common themes, while also covering discipline specific topics. Content outline In this module you will cover the following topics: Principles, theories and historic backgrounds underlying current nursing specialist practice The principles and practice of partnership/collaborative working with clients, carers and professionals. The principles and practice of safe guarding adults and children in society. The principles and practice of holistic assessment when working in situations of known and unknown risk, complexity and vulnerability. Discipline specific knowledge about lifespan and development needs of clients/patients/children/young people/families Discipline specific knowledge of client/patient/child/young person/family needs in practice Discipline specific application of best evidence to assess and address client/patient/child/young person/family needs in practice
2 WHAT WILL I BE EXPECTED TO ACHIEVE? On successful completion of this module, you will be expected to be able to: Knowledge and understanding: Critically appraise and manage the evidence-base for effective holistic assessment of families/clients/children/young people/patients relevant to your specific discipline Critically appraise the range of factors impacting on lifespan transitions/ development relevant to your specific discipline Critically appraise and synthesise issues that must be addressed when managing cases in which families/clients/children and young people/patients are vulnerable and in need of safeguarding because of actual and potential abuse or violence. Skills: Critical evaluate and manage issues of risk and resilience for individuals, carers or families Critically appraise and synthesise relevant theory, policy and research, applying this to your own area of practice Critically evaluate your own professional role and the roles of other relevant professionals and agencies for effective family/client/children/ young person/patient/community interventions Values and attitudes: Critically reflect on the value base underpinning professional practice and interprofessional working Critically reflect and synthesise theoretical principles underpinning practice, applying these to your discipline HOW WILL I LEARN? You will be taught through a combination of lectures, e-learning, group work, tutorials and student directed study time. The module will run over the two terms. The teaching component of the module will take place in term one and two.

Assessments The assessment for this module is a written examination. The examination has of two parts; a seen and an unseen part. You will be given the seen part approximately least one week before the day of the examination. You will be given the unseen part at the start of the examination. Assessment pattern: Assessment component Assessment type Weighting Minimum Pass/Fail? qualifying mark Case study based examination (seen part) Written Examination 50 50% N/A Case study based examination (unseen part) Assessment criteria Written examination 50 50% NA Assessment criteria are descriptions of the skills, knowledge or attributes you need to demonstrate in order to complete an assessment successfully and grade related criteria are descriptions of the skills, knowledge or attributes you need to demonstrate to achieve a certain grade or mark in an assessment. Assessment criteria and grade related criteria for the module assessments will be made available to you prior to the assessment taking place. More information will be available from the module leader. Feedback on assessment Following an assessment you will be given your mark and feedback in line with the assessment regulations and policy. More information on the timing and type of feedback that will be provided for each assessment will be available from the module leader. Assessment Regulations The Pass mark for the module is 50%. You must achieve a mark of 50% in the seen part and a mark of 50% in the unseen part in order to PASS the module. The final mark for the module is the average of both the seen and the unseen part of the examination. Any minimum qualifying marks for specific assessments are listed in the table above. The
