1 UMEÅ SCHOOL OF BUSINESS AND ECONOMICS AT UMEÅ UNIVERSITY Program description Program syllabus INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS PROGRAM 140/180 points (210/270 ECTS credits) The international business program provides a basis for working with qualified international business related tasks in companies, organizations and in the public sector, both in Sweden and abroad. The program gives you the possibility to choose between two majors; Business Administration or Economics. English is included in the program as the language of instruction throughout all courses. A course in English Language studies is also provided. As a student in the international business program, you have the opportunity to locate parts of your program abroad, either in the form of studies abroad, and/or in the form of international internship. For the final year of the program, you select one of the USBE s five oneyear Master s programs. These programs concentrate on different parts of the broad labor market for businessmen and businesswomen. Accounting and Finance, Marketing, Management, Entrepreneurship or Economics. 2 The basic university education shall give the student knowledge and proficiency, the ability to make independent, critical assessments, the ability to solve problems independently and the ability to follow academic development, all within the area covered by the program. The program is also intended to develop the student s ability to exchange information at an academic level. Objectives of the Program The general objective of the international business program is to develop competence and qualifications for international business related tasks in companies, organizations or in the public sector. The program shall also prepare the student for post-graduate studies in business administration or alternatively in economics. After completing the program, the student shall have: the ability to identify, structure and analyze problems from a social science perspective an academic qualification in economic sciences academic knowledge within one of the two majors business administration or economics qualification in English with emphasis on business English advanced knowledge of international conditions, acquired both through course work, through the opportunity of studying abroad, and through internship in foreign companies, organizations or the public sector. Admission Requirements To be eligible for admission to the program, applicants shall have the basic admission qualification for university studies and special qualification (so-called standard qualification), D.4.1 and C.1 NB! All course literature is in English. All instruction is conducted in English. Examinations in all courses require good abilities in written presentation. Content and Arrangement The international business program consists of five parts: 1. An introductory, compulsory basic block during the first four semesters. 2. One semester of continuing studies (B level) in the chosen major. 3. One elective semester. 4. One semester of further advanced studies (C level) within the selected major; this ends with a Bachelor s thesis. 5. Two semesters in the elective one-year Master s program (D level). The introductory, compulsory basic block includes the following courses: Business Administration A, 20 points Jurisprudential Survey course, 10 points English, 10 points Statistics, 15 points Economic History, 5 points Economics A, 20 points

3 The remainder of the program consists of elective parts. Selection of a major is made during the fourth semester. During the fifth semester, advanced studies within the selected major are commenced (B level). The sixth elective semester can be spent at one of the USBE s partner universities (primarily in Europe). Advanced studies within the major (C level) are undertaken during the seventh semester. After completion of seven semesters within the program s framework, a degree of Bachelor of Science in International Business Administration and Economics is obtained of 140 points.

ADVANCED STUDIES AT ONE OF UMEÅ SCHOOL OF BUSINESS AND ECONOMICS MASTER S PROGRAMS Semesters 8 and 9 During these semesters, you follow one of the following Master s programs - Master in Accounting and Finance - Master in Marketing Research Analysis Management - Master in Entrepreneurship and Dynamic Business Contexts - Master in Management: People, projects and processes - Master in Economics Within each Master s program, your studies during the fall will consist of theoretical courses within one of the two majors business administration or economics D, 20p During the spring, your studies will consist of Elective course *** 10p and Master s Thesis 10p *** The opportunity for international internship will be provided during the elective part of semester 9. The elective course has to be a full time course at one of USBE s five departments: Business Administration, Economics, Statistics, Law or Economic History. The eighth and ninth semesters of the program consist of an elective one-year Master s program within the framework of the Umeå School of Business and Economics. Five different Master s programs are offered, four within business administration and one within economics. The specialization within Master s studies is chosen during semester seven. As a student in the International Business program, you are guaranteed a place of your choice in the Master s program. The opportunity for gaining international internship will be provided during the Master s year. The sequential arrangement of the courses may be subject to change. Students accepted for the program have the right to follow one of the directions of the program or one of the eligible alternative courses. Selection may be necessary if a program or course has more applicants than available places.

5 The Umeå School of Business and Economics One-year Master s Program After the first three and a half years of the program, the student has the opportunity of a guaranteed place to choose one of five different one-year Master s programs. The chart above shows the ways these programs are organized. The content of the Master s program is specified in a separate brochure which can be ordered from the program coordinator. Examinations and Grading Examinations are normally conducted at the end of the module or course, and are normally written examinations. Students who do not pass an examination have the opportunity to take the examination again in accordance with the rules given in the syllabus. Those who pass the examination can not take a new examination for higher qualifications. The number of opportunities to take the examination is given in each respective syllabus. Each student has a guaranteed right to take an examination on four occasions. Unless otherwise stated in the syllabus for a particular course, the following designations shall be used for examination results: Fail, Pass and Pass with Distinction. Grades are set for each part and course. Grading is made when all examinations and compulsory components, for example, laboratory work and submission work, have been approved. Degree Diploma and Designation of Degree Bachelor of Science in International Business Administration and Economics. The requirements for this examination are as follows: A total of 140 points, of which the main part shall be made up of courses within the framework of the international business program, as given below. Economics 20 points and Business Administration 60 points (A-C level) or: Business Administration 20 points and Economics 60 points (A-C level) Jurisprudential Survey course, 10 points English for international business students, 10 points Statistics, 15 points Economic History, 5 points Bachelor thesis, written in English, of which 10 points shall be included in the advanced studies in Business Administration or Economics respectively. Master of Science in Business Administration and Economics* Requirements for this examination are as follows: A total of 160 points, of which the main part shall consist of courses within the framework of the Master s program as below: 20p Business Administration 20p Economics 10p Statistics Jurisprudential Survey course, 10 points In the major, 80 points, including 20 points theses (Bachelor thesis 10 p. and Master thesis 10 p.). *Further Master of Science in Business Administration and Economics programs with different emphases are available. 6 Post-Graduate Research Studies Students who have graduated with the Bachelor of Science in International Business Administration and Economics, are eligible to apply for post-graduate research studies in their respective major (Business Administration or Economics). Other Stipulations Students who have been accepted for the program are entitled to a break in their studies, with a guaranteed place upon their return, for the following reasons: pregnancy, long-term parental leave, sickness, military service, student union assignments or other particular reasons which shall be considered individually. Normally, a break in the studies with a guaranteed place is for a maximum of one year. Applications for a break shall be made to the program coordinator. Admission/Application The Verket för Högskoleservice, VHS is responsible for admissions of Swedish applicants to the program. Admissions are, at present, made once per academic year (spring term). Swedish applicants shall use the form for the VHS coordinated admission. The final application date and application address are given in the VHS information. International applicants shall apply to the local admissions office of Umeå University.
