5 What is a Peer Mentor? Definition: The term peer is used to refer to all individuals who share the experiences of addiction and recovery, either directly or as family members or significant others. In a peer-helping-peer service alliance, a peer leader in a stable recovery provides social support services to a peer who is seeking help in establishing or maintaining his or her recovery. (SAMHSA, 2009).
6 What is a Peer Mentor? Definition: An important part of being a peer mentor is being a role model. SAMHSA further states: Self-disclosure and using one s own story as means of enhancing the value of the service is an important dimension of the recovery mentoring or coaching role. In addition, a peer mentor or coach implicitly holds himself or herself out as a recovery role model.
7 What is a Peer Mentor? As described by William White, this core competency entails modeling of core recovery values (e.g., tolerance, acceptance, gratitude); the capacity for self-observation, self-expression, sober problem solving; recovery-based reconstruction of personal identity and interpersonal relationships; freedom from coercive institutions; economic self-sufficiency; positive citizenship and public service. (White, 2006)
8 Parental Peer Mentor Peer mentor for parents includes many of the same principles and values for peer mentors. They are parents or family members that have a family member with an addiction. For Maplegrove s program Parents are involved in a 12 step recovery program such as Al-Anon or Families Anonymous.
9 What a Peer Mentor Does (Peer Mentor Versus Sponsor Versus Therapist) Peer mentor: The role of the peer mentor is to compliment the preexisting services that are provided. Evidence shows that seeing or visualizing those similar to oneself successfully performing activities typically increases a person s belief in his or her own ability to perform those activities successfully. (Faces & Voices of Recovery 2010)
10 What a Peer Mentor IS NOT A peer mentor is not a sponsor Conflict of interest A peer mentor does not have a license to practice in their field Some states are now requiring certification They do not replace clinical staff Clinical staff are an important role to the recovering population
11 Role of the Sponsor, (2010) The sponsor operates in relative isolation from professional helpers Provide support within a particular fellowship, emphasizing the viability and superiority of the particular program or fellowship as a framework for successful recovery
12 Sponsor continued Support is limited to those who have a desire to stop drinking and to those who have sought help within a local recovery program or fellowship Utilize 12 step tools Are not allowed reimbursement Are not held accountable by formal organizational code of ethics

18 SAMHSA Guidelines for Peer Mentors Can work with any recovery stages, (Prochaska, Norcross, and DiClementi (1995) Precontemplative Contemplative Determination/preparation Action Maintenance Relapse
19 SAMHSA Guidelines for Peer Mentors To meet the needs of people at different stages of the recovery process. SAMHSA suggests the following possibilities: Precede formal treatment Accompany treatment, providing a community connection during treatment Follow treatment, supporting relapse prevention Be delivered apart from treatment to someone who cannot enter the formal treatment system or chooses not to do so
20 SAMHSA Guidelines for Peer Mentors Adaptable to a variety of treatment settings and made to fit each treatment centers philosophy and values. Suggest these basic core principles: Keeping recovery first Cultural diversity and inclusion Participatory process Authenticity of peers helping peers Leadership development
21 SAMHSA Guidelines for Peer Mentors Building Resilience Identifying the peer s strengths and building on them Recovery planning does not start with a process that identifies deficits and disabilities, but rather with a conversation intended to uncover the peer s interests, abilities and goals.

24 IOP/ERG Adolescent Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP): 6-week program, three nights per week, three hours each night Adolescent Early Recovery Group (ERG) Adolescent Early Intervention Program (EIP)
25 Overview of Maplegrove Model This program consists of different levels, each with its own responsibilities and qualifications in order to be a mentor Adolescent Peer Mentor Leader duties and requirements: Staff leader volunteers are in charge of mentoring a group of peer mentor volunteers They are to be 18 years or older
26 Overview of Maplegrove Model Peer Mentor Leader Must be willing to volunteer set hours based upon the schedule created by the peer mentor team Must complete the volunteer facility requirements Leads meetings once per month or more for the peer mentor program. Set-up meetings. Reports directly to the Adolescent therapists meeting notes and activities
27 Overview of Maplegrove Model If the peer mentor leader is in recovery, the following is required: Drug free for one year or longer Have a sponsor Working the 12 steps Attending support group meetings They will be requested to have the additional task of speaking to parents and clients from the IOP once every six weeks
28 Overview of Maplegrove Model Provide a list of 12 step meetings where young people are attending. Set dates and times for IOP clients to attend a meeting for the first and also attend Participate in at least one IOP lecture
29 Overview of Maplegrove Model PHASE 1 Peer mentors Must successfully complete the IOP Must attend 2 support group meetings each week Must have a sponsor Must maintain sobriety
