1 Doctor of Education (Ed.D.) Contemporary Curriculum Theory and Instruction: Literacy Frequently Asked Questions What is the overview of the program at SU? Offering both a full and part-time study, this program has been designed for working professionals. Coursework encompasses 4 thematic areas: inquiry as practice (methodology coursework), signature pedagogy, labs of practice, and the specialization in literacy. We are considering a variety of formats for the courses including evening, weekends, and online/hybrid. Candidates must pass a series of milestones, which includes the dissertation. What is the timeline for the application process? We hope to open the admissions process at the beginning of December, with preference given to applicants who submit their materials by March 1. What are the components of the application? Applicants must submit the following: the online application, statement of purpose, resume, official GREs scores, official transcripts from all universities and colleges attended, and three (3) letters of recommendation from those who can attest to your scholarly potential. Will there be funding from the school or county for the candidates to pursue the Ed.D? District reimbursement for doctoral programs and direct billing options vary by district. A table of this information is available at the end of this document, but you should check with your district human resources office to confirm this information. How many years will the program take to complete? A full-time student can expect to complete the program in four years; part-time students can complete it in five. Is the program accredited through NCATE? The program is not accredited and does not need to be because it doesn't lead to an additional certification.

2 Are graduate assistantships/fellowships available? The Ed.D. program will have at least one graduate assistantship in the first year of the program. It is for $5000 and tuition remission in exchange for 20 hours of work/week. Additional assistantships will be available as the program progresses. I primarily work with adults instead of P-12 students. Could I tailor this program to a more adult education focus? We anticipate that this program will be relevant to higher education faculty and that courses will address issues facing P-16 educators. You may certainly complete the work and dedicate your studies through the lens of your own student population. If I am not coming from a school of education background, would I be at a major disadvantage entering the program? Since this degree is a doctorate of education, it will be most beneficial for you to have experiences in education or organization that works with students (P-16 or adults). Having this foundation will provide a context for your work. Your culminating study and dissertation should be grounded in an educational context. This program asks students to consider problems of practice relevant to their professional settings. You would work on a dissertation that is meaningful to your professional context and that could encompass a variety of topics. For how many years are GRE scores accepted? GRE score are valid for five years from the test date. Is the program structured for (non-traditional) students who work? Yes, there is program track for both full-time and part-time students. The program is designed for full-time working professionals, and we anticipate that a student who enrolls full-time will be able to complete the program in four years. We will offer a part-time option; that program can be completed in five years. What's the difference between a Doctorate of Education (Ed.D.) and a Doctorate of Philosophy (Ph.D.) program? The Ed.D. and Ph.D. are terminal degrees and require original research by the student. 4 Direct billing options by district: County Direct Billing Tuition Reimbursement Plan for Doctoral Coursework District Contact Caroline Yes Caroline County Public Schools' teachers are eligible for reimbursement for up to nine credits per year, at a rate of up to $ per credit hour for tuition only. The reimbursement year begins with the summer semester. 5 Dorchester: Teachers: 10.1 Reimbursement for Professional Training 1. Teachers holding a Standard Professional or Advanced Professional Certificate will be paid for graduate courses taken toward certificate renewal, an Advanced Professional Certificate, a Master s degree, a doctorate degree, or courses required by the Maryland State Department of Education, provided the Superintendent or his/her designee has granted prior approval for the courses/program to be taken. In cases where undergraduate course work will serve to satisfy requirements, such course(s) will be reimbursable, provided they receive prior approval as required for graduate level courses. Subject to the needs of the school system and funding, the Board may approve a limited number of teachers for course reimbursement for doctorate degree courses. The teacher must apply for program approval before starting the coursework for a doctorate degree to qualify for reimbursement. Advanced reimbursement will not be available for doctorate courses, unless the credits are required for certificate renewal. 2. Teachers approved to take courses shall be reimbursed at the lesser of the actual cost or the Salisbury University rate per credit hour for a maximum of twelve (12) semester hours per year, including reimbursement for course credit hours fees charged.
