1 MIAMI-DADE CHAPTER OF THE ONCOLOGY NURSING SOCIETY By: Jozel Watson, RN, Editor January/February 2012 Message from the President: Dear Miami-Dade ONS Chapter Members: News bits Welcome to the 2012 Miami-Dade ONS! I want to say Thank you to everyone for giving me the opportunity to be the President of the MDONS this year. I ve been a member to this organization since 4 years ago, and if you had asked me then if it was in my plans to become the president, I would have definitely said no, but as the years went by, I was inspired and motivated to be more involved in this organization by the past leaders such as Jessica Macyntire, and Haydee Kapin. This is our first issue of our chapter s newsletter for the year 2012, and I would like to thank Jozel Watson for continuing to do a tremendous job as our editor of the newsletter. Since for many of you I am a new face, I would like to introduce myself and share a little bit of my background. I have been in the oncology specialty for the last 7 years, and it was my first choice coming out from nursing school, and it will always be my first choice as the years go by. What inspired me to do oncology nursing as my first specialty? It was my undergraduate nursing professor Pat Collins. I attended UM School of Nursing back in 2003, and my first elective class was called Intro to Oncology Nursing. I took this class because many of the students that took this course stated that they enjoyed the professor and that the class was fun. However, as I took this course, not only did I learn a lot about oncology and the different types of treatments, but I also learned that to be an oncology nurse was more than a calling, it was faithful, loving care. Through each class, I saw the passion, the commitment, and the enthusiasm in my professor so that I wanted to be like her, passionate about my nursing career. Therefore, I always knew in my heart that I wanted to practice a career in which I can make a difference and be there for the most important moments of people s lives. Being an oncology nurse is not an easy job as many of you know, however, it has been one the most rewarding experience that I have had in my life. I want to thank my managers, Cindy Bowling and Judy Burgess for helping me throughout this journey, and also my co-workers because with their help and guidance they have helped me to grow in this profession. As I start a new role in the Miami-Dade ONS Chapter, I want to thank all the BOD members for helping me in this new transition, and thank all of you (the general ONS members) for attending the monthly meetings, and for being involved with the chapter. I want to encourage all of you to join all the activities that will be going on this year, and to participate as a group. I am welcome to hear any ideas, suggestions, or comments that can improve the MDONS chapter. Sarai Cortes, ARNP-C, MSN President, Miami-Dade Chapter of the Oncology Nursing Society
