Historical presence of cormorants and pelicans in the Leech Lake area.
1805 Pelican Island noted on map and in text of the Zebulon Pike Expedition.
1800s William Whipple Warren who was an interpreter at the fur- trade era trading post at Hardwood Point on Leech Lake noted that Pelican Island got its name from the pelican rockery that was found there. A Cormorant Point also mentioned on Mille Lacs Lake.
1821 Cass Expedition, Schoolcraft noted both cormorants and pelicans on Lake Winnibigoshish. They also noted tribal usage of Pelicans Schoolcraft noted pelicans, swans, brants, and cormorants on Leech Lake.

How do current cormorant numbers in Minnesota compare to historical levels?
The big issue on Leech Lake, from the perception of the public, is whether or not cormorant predation is negatively impact on the walleye population.

Why was cormorant conflict management conducted on Leech Lake? Reduce competition between common terns and other colonial waterbirds To address circumstantial evidence that cormorants may have been causing poor survival of small walleye.

Cormorant conflict management is conducted on the nest site early in the season and 500 nests were excluded from these activities. When combined with birds collected for the diet study, a total of about almost 15,000 bird have been removed from the lake since 2005.
Cormorant Research Assessment of double-crested cormorant food habits and predation effects on selected fish species in Leech Lake This study is being funded under a Tribal Wildlife Grant from the US Fish and Wildlife Service. Other cooperators or funders of the project include: US Fish and Wildlife Service USDA Wildlife Services MN Department of Natural Resources University of Minnesota Leech Lake Reservation Division of Resources Management Goals of the study: Determine what species of fish cormorant eat, how many, and what size range. Determine what impact this predation has on the walleye and yellow perch populations in Leech Lake.

Putting cormorant predation into perspective
Cormorant predation Being that cormorants feed mostly on small fish their predation is compensatory in nature being that most of these fish would have been eaten by other fish anyhow. It is only when predation is additive (in excess of natural levels) that they can cause changes in fish populations.
From Great Lake Sea Grant Program Aquatic Food Web
Cormorant forage primarily on fish in these year classes. How much is compensatory, how much is additive?? Typical Walleye Survival on Leech Lake Growth Stage % Survival Fry to Yearling < 2% (variable) Yearling to Age-2 15 Age-2 to Age-3 35 Age-3 to Age-4 80 From MN DNR
Putting cormorant predation on Leech Lake into perspective Pounds of walleye consumed by cormorants (53,000 lbs) Total pounds of all fish species consumed by cormorants (656,670 lbs) Estimated pounds of fish consumed by other fish / 2* *Based on 200 lbs acre total fish biomass *Fish eating three time its weight per year *Est. lbs. of fish consumed is divided in half to subtract fish that eat invertebrates, etc.
Estimated fish consumption for Western Lake Erie, adapted from Madenjian and Gabrey ,000, ,000, ,000, ,000, ,000, ,000, Pounds of fish consumed by Bonaparte's gulls 2.00 Pounds of fish consumed by great egrets 3.00 Pounds of fish consumed by black-crowned night herons 4.00 Pounds of fish consumed by common mergansers 5.00 Pounds of fish consumed by great blue herons 6.00 Pounds of fish consumed by double-crested cormorants 7.00 Pounds of fish consumed by ring-billed gulls 8.00 Pounds of fish consumed by herring gulls 9.00 Pounds of fish consumed by red-breasted mergansers Pounds of fish consumed by walleyes Pounds of fish consumed by all species of fish??? Unknown, not calculated Cormorant consumption was 1.3% of walleye consumption alone
Conclusion The numbers of small walleyes in the lake has increased in some years since control was initiated and fishing success is up. Extensive walleye fry stocking, reduced fishing pressure, initiation of a slot limit, and reduce bag makes it difficult to evaluate how much this was due to cormorant control.
Mean population level Target fall population level (500 nests + 2 young per nest) Data from LL Res. DRM
