15 ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS FOR THE CLINICAL PSYCHOLOGY DOCTORAL PROGRAM Applicants for the Clinical Psychology Program are screened in two stages. First, the credentials submitted by all applicants by the deadline are reviewed. A group of finalists is selected and invited to be interviewed by the Psychology Department faculty. Students for the program are selected from among these finalists, based on the totality of their credentials and their interview performance. All information must be received by February 1. Students are admitted for fall matriculation only. Program faculty review all written material during the last half of February. Finalists are generally contacted in early March to schedule interviews. Students selected for the program are notified of their status as soon as admissions decisions are made. If a selected student declines or withdraws from consideration, then another finalist may be selected from the waiting list. SCREENING CRITERIA It may be helpful to applicants to know what characteristics and experiences the screening committee looks for in evaluating applicants. 17 ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS FOR ALL COUNSELING APPLICANTS (including the summers only program) Applicants for the School Counseling and the Mental Health Counseling programs are evaluated through separate admissions committees for each program. It is, therefore, very important that you apply for the program that is most appropriate to your professional goals. Each applicant is required to submit a short essay answer to each of the topics listed below. The resulting four short essays are required in addition to the general application requirements (including the goal statements requested on page 3). These essays will be evaluated by the Selection Committee for clarity in describing the factors that contributed to your choice of school counseling and guidance or mental health counseling as a profession and to your decision to undertake graduate study at this time. Each essay should be typed, double-spaced, and about one-half to three-fourths of a page in length. SCHOOL COUNSELING and MENTAL HEALTH COUNSELING Essay Questions Identify and discuss your character strengths and attributes and how you perceive them to contribute to your desire to become a professional counselor and, particularly, a counselor who works with deaf/hh populations. Identify and describe your weaknesses and how these may present potential challenges in your journey to becoming a professional counselor? Describe a helping situation where you were the helper and/or provided support to another person(s) and/ or organization/community. How did you understand the need and how did this impact your feelings, thoughts, behaviors? What was your motivation to take on this helping role? How did you provide the help and/or support? What outcome did you expect, and how did it compare to the actual outcome? In hindsight, what, if anything, would you have done differently today? Describe either a work situation OR an interpersonal interaction with someone in which you experienced considerable disagreement, conflict, discriminatory behavior and/or attitude. Identify and reflect on specific feelings, thoughts and critical analyses that came up for you during the situation what was your reaction, the reaction and response of the other person(s) involved? How did you end up handling the situation? What insights did you gain about yourself, your ability to relate to other people, and how you deal with the kind of circumstances with which you were faced? The Department has a strong emphasis on multiculturalism and social justice in counseling. We consider a professional counselor to be a social change agent who not only addresses change on an individual level but has the responsibility to address change on the group/organizational and systemic levels. In your personal and/or professional life, can you provide an example of your participation, advocacy, or leadership in helping to improve and/or change the current social status, for the better, of a cultural/racial-ethnic/or religious group? Describe your role in detail, your motivations, how you became involved, and the result of your participation as a social change agent for that group of people. In addition, as you consider making a professional commitment to becoming a counselor specializing in working with deaf/hh populations, describe what it means to you to be a social change agent within, and on behalf of the American Deaf/HH community in our society today? What do you consider are the most relevant social justice issues that need to be addressed for this community? One ADDITIONAL Essay Question for SCHOOL COUNSELING ONLY In this country, the deaf/hh student aged population has changed considerably over the years, as has the American Deaf Community overall. What, in your opinion, are the primary challenges (academic, personal and social, career) facing deaf/hh students today in their school programs, and what do you envision the school counselor s role to be in addressing these issues and needs? Identify at least two challenges and explain your choices. Please refer to the department website ( for additional requirements. Please call the Department of Counseling if you have questions concerning program requirements or need further information: (202) (voice) or (202) (VP). Thank you for your interest in the Department of Counseling. 13

21 Guidelines for Graduate Special Students at Gallaudet University What does it mean to be a Graduate Special Student at Gallaudet? Anyone wishing to register for a graduate class (both Gallaudet employees and non-employees) must apply and be accepted for graduate special student status. Graduate special students may enroll in graduate-level courses offered by departments but do not pursue a program of study leading to a graduate certificate or degree. Graduate special student status is limited to U.S. citizens and permanent residents only. Graduate special students are not eligible for financial support from Gallaudet University (except those who are also employees of Gallaudet University, and who qualify for ordinary employee benefits for waiver of tuition). Continuation as a graduate special student depends on the academic standards that apply to all graduate students. What are the requirements for Graduate Special Student status? To take courses as a graduate special student, you must have a bachelor s degree with at least a B (3.0 on a 4.0 scale) cumulative grade point average. You must complete this short application form and pay a $75 application fee. I took a graduate-level course five years ago as a graduate special student. Do I need to apply again before I may take another course as a special student? No. We keep your graduate special students status active for five years. If it has been more than five years since you took a course, you will need to reapply. Are there limitations on the courses that I can take as a graduate special student? As a graduate special student, you must obtain the instructor s permission to register for any course. Not every course is open to graduate special students. Enrollment in certain graduate courses is limited to degree-seeking students. Check with the department to be sure. Can international students take courses as Graduate Special Students? Admission as a graduate special student is available to international students in two ways. First, an international student holding an appropriate visa (F-1 or J-1) during the semester he or she wishes to take a Gallaudet graduate course, may become a graduate special student if he or she is taking a course on the Gallaudet campus or an extension course elsewhere in the United States and will be physically present for classes. Second, an international student taking an on-line course from a department within Gallaudet University who is not physically in the United States may be permitted graduate student special status without visa restrictions. In both cases, all other Gallaudet University restrictions apply, including the tuition surcharge for international students. Registering for Classes as a Graduate Special Student How do I register for classes at Gallaudet as a Graduate Special Student? 1. Once you have been accepted as a graduate special student, obtain and fill out a Course Selection Form. 2. Check with the departments offering the courses you want to take. You must meet all prerequisites, and you must obtain the instructor s signature, granting permission to take each class. 3. Obtain the signature of the Graduate Special Student advisor in the Office of the Dean of the Graduate School. 4. Submit the course selection form to the Registrar s Office, then complete Business Registration with the Student Accounts office What if I want to become a full-time Gallaudet graduate student after taking a few courses as a special student? Admission as a graduate special student neither implies nor guarantees subsequent admission to a degree program at Gallaudet University. There may be a limit on the number of credits that may be applied to a degree program. If you plan to seek admission as a degree-seeking student in the future, you should check with an advisor in the department to ensure that the courses you take as a graduate special student will be acceptable for the program. 17
