2 Course Outcomes/Objectives: The student will be able to: 1. Identify and define key terms relative to nursing home management, assisted living and other long term care residential services 2. Describe both the administrative and management functions involved in nursing homes and other long term care facilities. 3. Identify and describe staffing needs, roles, and responsibilities in long term care facilities. 4. Recognize and respond to client needs in nursing homes, assisted living and other long term care residential facilities. 5. Demonstrate the role of communication from both an administrative and staff perspective 6. Define administrative roles with regard to community relation / liaison activities. 7. Identify and discuss the role of local, state, and federal policy regarding the organization and administration of nursing homes and other long term care residential facilities. 8. Become knowledgeable about the various financial mechanisms which influence cash flow and reimbursement in long term care. 9. Examine the role of health programming in long term care facilities. 10. Identify, examine, and discuss issues, trends and ethical concerns involved in nursing homes and other long term care residential settings. 11. Identify and discuss the physical, social and psychological environments of long term care residential settings. 2

5 We will utilize Desire to Learn (D2L), which is a University web site where all materials may be obtained, to include this syllabus, power point, and exams (at specified times). D2L also provides us with discussion opportunities/forums, whereby we can communicate as a group, as needed, at specified times. Please note that you will have to obtain a network ID and a password, but once this is done accessing D2L is easy. You will need the following information to create a network ID: Your Student Identification Number Your SIU assigned PIN for SalukiNet (should have been mailed to you) Determine your preferred Network ID (suggestion: first letter of your first name and entire last name) Your default password for your Network ID: the last 4 digits of your Student Identification Number and the 4 digits of your assigned PIN (Example: Student ID ends with Pin is Password will be ) If you have problems with D2L, please contact the help desk at between 8 and 4:30 CST. It is highly recommended that you establish a Network ID as soon as you can, and check your D2L account on a regular basis to ensure that you are up to date about what is taking place in class and to ensure that assignments are done and submitted on time. Pre-Test & Post-Test The pre-test will be available the first week of the course. Please check D2L for exact dates and times. The pre-test is to determine what you currently know. Students should avoid using their textbook and answer the questions based off current knowledge and experience. Your grade on this test will not count towards your final grade in the course. The post-test will be available the last week of the course. Please check D2L for exact dates and times. The post-test, like the pretest, does not count towards your final grade. Students are able to use any course material. Discussion Boards For the discussion forums, students will be asked to reflect and analyze a case study or a discussion question. Students will post their response to the topic on the discussion board. This assignment also requires that you read the reflection posted by your classmates and respond to at least two of those postings. Your initial post should be at least 2 paragraphs in length. Click on Start a New Thread and compose (or cut and paste) your response. When you have finished writing your answer, click on the Post button at the bottom of the page. There are questions at the end of each case study, these are questions to help you develop your response. Your response should NOT just be answering the questions. Your response should be in paragraph form with complete sentences. Students, who only answer the questions, will receive NO credit. 5

6 Your reflection should include the following: Assessment of the case or the discussion question Thoughtfulness of what and how your write your post (based on course material) Any conclusions that might be considered. Your response and reply to other classmates must be posted no later than midnight CST on the due date. Late discussion responses and replies will receive NO credit. Do not wait until the last minute to post your answer. Posting early allows you to write well-thought-out answers and to be the first one to make important points. Posting early also ensures that you will not miss the deadline. Make sure you check your response for spelling and grammar. You may go back and edit your answer but not remove it. When you are ready to reply to an answer given by your classmates, go to the thread, open it, and click Reply to Thread. Post your response and click on Post. The discussion board is not an informal chat room. Your answers and replies should be thoughtful, considerate, and use college-level language and grammar. Replying to the postings of your classmates In addition to writing your own reflection, for each case study, you will compose a response to at least one other classmate s reflection. In your replies to other students you can: Expand on or clarify a point made in the answer Offer an additional argument to support a position taken in an answer Suggest ways in which an idea could be more clearly expressed Identify passages where you think the writer misunderstood a concept or applied it incorrectly Disagree with a point or position made in an answer If you are disagreeing with the views of another student, please be constructive and respectful. You may criticize a position but not the author. State precisely the point you disagree with and offer reasons why you think their view is incorrect and support your position by citing the text or other sources. Student Responsibilities The purpose of the discussion board assignments is for students to reflect thoughtfully and exchange ideas on the topics covered in this course. As a class, you will benefit from this assignment only as much as you put into it. Last minute post that are inaccurate, sloppy, unorganized, and unclear will help no one. If you find that a post is unclear or inaccurate, it is your role to ask your classmate for further clarification or to point out the inaccuracy. If someone replies to your post with a question, you owe him/her the courtesy of a response. You are also responsible for posting your answer and replies on time. Grading of the discussion board assignments There are four discussion board assignments. Each discussion board assignment has a value of eight points. 6

7 Case Studies An integral component of this class is to have the ability to research, analyze, and then draw conclusions from real life situations. A case study can begin a journey in our further understanding of the complexity of a situation. There will be four case studies throughout the course, please see the course schedule for due dates. Each case study will be specific enough to perform some research and provide a response to the question/concept being presented. Each case study should be approximately 3 pages in length (not including a title page and reference page). Please remember, that you are permitted and encouraged to include what you think in this written work. If you have questions about this work, please feel free to contact me. Exams There will be one exam, during module 4 of this course. The exam will be made up of multiple choice, true/false and matching questions. Quizzes There will be two quizzes. More information and scheduled due dates can be found in D2L and on our course schedule. Online Course Checkpoint Each student is required to contact the instructor sometime during module 2 and module 3. Be prepared to share your progress, ask questions, and discuss the course. This checkpoint can be via or telephone call. Your instructor wants to make sure that you are doing well and that there is time to resolve/answer questions and concerns before the course ends. Student Conduct Code: It is each student s responsibility to know and comply with the SIUC Student Conduct Code and any policies referenced therein. Emergency Procedures: Southern Illinois University Carbondale is committed to providing a safe and healthy environment for study and work. Because some health and safety circumstances are beyond our control, we ask that you become familiar with the SIUC Emergency Response Plan and Building Response Team (BERT) program. Emergency response information is available on posters in buildings on campus, available on BERT s website at Department of Safety s website at (disaster drop down) and in the Emergency Response Guideline pamphlet. Know how to respond to each type of emergency. Instructors will provide guidance and direction to students in the classroom in the event of an emergency affecting your location. It is important that you follow these instructions and stay with your instructor during an evacuation or sheltering emergency. The Building Emergency Response Team will provide assistance to your instructor in evacuating the building or sheltering within the facility. Academic Dishonesty: Students may be subject to disciplinary proceedings resulting in an academic penalty or disciplinary penalty for academic dishonesty. Academic dishonesty includes, but is not limited to, cheating on a test, plagiarism, or collusion. 7

Your written case studies must follow the APA manuscript writing style. Below is the APA Format to use. Title/Cover Page Body - Introduction, Discussion, Conclusion, Bibliography/Reference Page (the textbook can be one of your references).
