6 MEET OUR PANELLISTS ALISTAIR LUM PHD Candidate at Behavioural Sciences Unit, Kids Cancer Centre, Sydney Children s Hospital, UNSW During my time as an undergraduate I was employed in numerous roles linked to my psychology degree - a play therapist s assistant, student mentor for student s with disability, and youth worker at an adolescent/ young adult drug and alcohol rehab. I also took on volunteer opportunities that I felt were relevant to my interests. After graduating I took on a research assistant s role at the Black Dog Institute. After a year in this RA role I decided to extend my studies through a PhD. I searched my research topics and supervisor options thoroughly and was lucky enough to find a PhD project that aligned with my research interests under the supervision of some well-regarded researchers in the field. I am also lucky enough to be financially supported throughout my PhD candidature. FIONA CALVERT Clinical Psychology Registrar and PhD candidate, Illawarra Institute for Mental Health Fiona Calvert is a practising psychologist who works in a private practice in Sydney. She works with a variety of different client populations and clinical presentations, with a special interest in personality disorders. She holds a Bachelor of Psychology (Honours) and a Master of Clinical Psychology, both from the University of Wollongong. In addition to clinical practice, Fiona teaches and lectures at UOW and is currently completing her research PhD in psychology. She is also a contributing editor of the Australian Journal of Dementia Care, with a long-standing interest in the provision of psychological services in aged care. GONZALO SAN JUAN Employment Workplace Facilitator, Direct Employment After I graduated from UOW with my majors, I decided to look for work in Community Services and Development sector, particularly in Employment Services. Within three months of graduating, I attended five interviews and was offered employment at two employment service providers in the Sydney area. I initially worked as a Stream Four Employment Consultant for MTC Australia - Job Services Australia based at their Hurstville office. As a Stream Four consultant I had to case manage jobseekers who endure the most hardship, and face a range of both vocational and non vocational barriers to employment. This includes jobseekers who have never worked, have both physical and/or mental health issues that impede them to work, financial stressors, homelessness, and a whole range of other social/personal issues. Currently a Mental Health Employment Workplace Facilitator working for the Co-location program at St George Community Mental Health. I have worked in employment services since February 2013, being exposed to Disability Employment Services (DES) and Job Services Australia (JSA). LYN BEASY Consultant & Wellbeing Psychologist, The Salvation Army Upon graduation I was employed with a testing company which began my involvement in psychometric assessment. For the last ten years I have been employed in the not for profit sector focusing on assessment, and developing holistic Wellbeing of staff. This has given me opportunities to do training, leadership development and consulting across different sectors across the organisation.
