About the group: The numerical offshore tank (TPN) is a research lab pioneer in applied hydrodynamics. The TPN s main focus is to simulate the behavior of floating structures, coupled with risers and mooring systems, considering several points, as seabed topography, incidence of environmental conditions, despite of complex arrangements of floating structures. Complementarily to the conventional proof of a tank, the TPN can perform such model tests, generating reports and files in the same way. But dissimilarly to a physical tank, TPN can process hundreds or thousands of analyses directly, faster and economical. The heart of TPN is a cluster of computers (120 processors currently, expandable up to 400 processors), which today is one of the largest groups in Brazil for research purposes. The TPN has conducted research and development in numerical modeling, computer graphics on many platforms, as well as incorporating other institutions to multidisciplinary development. 1. Higor Medeiros, Carlos Endo, Nikolas Lukin It has been studied and developed in the laboratory Numerical Offshore Tank a simulation program on computational fluid dynamics based on the particle method called Moving Particle Semi-Implicit Method (MPS). The program has application in many areas of study, but the focus is in Naval Engineering phenomena such as: Effect of sloshing on the motion of the floating structure in waves; Stabilization Tanks; Damage Stability in waves; Oil spill; Loading in ship structure by sloshing, slamming and shipping of green water. Such effects are being validated through benchmark tests or physical tests to be performed on towing tanks at Department of Naval Engineering of USP. It has been studied and developed in the Numerical Offshore Tank (TPN), a production system consisting of a mini wellhead TLP, considering the environmental conditions of the Campos Basin Field, coupled through cables or yoke of synthetic (polyester or nylon) to a FPSO, allowing the use of dry tree. Since the main focus of study phenomena related innovation based in this coupling, such as: Studying the hydrodynamic coupling (WAMIT ) and the coupling of lines (TPN ) between units; Development of new applications for synthetic ropes; Comparison with physical testing and validation of TPN; The physical tests are realized at National Maritime Research Institute (NMRI), Japan in 2007 ends and compared with TPN results. This platform was designed to store 1.6MMbbl of oil using rigid risers (SCR). Recently, this project has been approved as an alternative system of exploration and production. Alongside this platform were developed two other units with a capacity of 1.45 and 1.2 MMbbl. 3 For that reason, TPN in partnership with Petrobras and other teach and research institutions are developing a conceptual design of a monocolumn platform with dry tree. In the same direction, the technology must follow this demand, and the search for new concepts that can achieve this technical and economical expectation becomes mandatory. As a solution, a new oil production unit, called MonoBR, was developed, The MonoBR concept has been developed since 2001, through a cooperation project between PETROBRAS and University of São Paulo. João Vicente Sparano The Numerical Offshore Tank was born with the objective to synthesize the developments made in recent years in Universities and Research Institutes, about the behavior of ocean systems modeling, to develop new models and implement a

4 computer system that enables make the simulation of the behavior of the floating systems coupled to the mooring lines and risers, considering the existing interactions, and that allows the visualization of the results obtained. Though there are already some tools for the computational simulation of the dynamic behavior of oceanic systems influenced by the action of environmental agents, some simplifications were considered or phenomena disregarded, in order to facilitate the implementation and the time/cost of processing. Part of these simplifications are no longer considered in the TPN and various phenomena have been modeled. The high processing time and the need for storage of the large amount of information generated made the use of this simulator rather attractive in a single processor. In order to facilitate its use has become vital to parallel processing. Winckler; Denis Taniguchi; Antonio Russo To simulate the dynamic behavior of a full ocean system, including production units, shuttle tank, risers, umbilical and mooring lines, in addition to the software developed specifically, is necessary a large computer equipment to be able to run it and provide results within a satisfactory period of time. Two types of solutions can be considered for the definition of the hardware needed. The first, more traditional, is in search of equipment that has the fastest possible processor. The second, more modern, is the sum of a large number of common processors, which can be easily found at an affordable price. What this solution is adopted it is necessary that the software is ready to run in parallel, or so that the tasks are divided among several processors. Denis Taniguchi, Paula Pimentel Ruocci, Henrique Zambon The tpnview is part of the Project Numerical Offshore Tank (TPN), responsible for visualization of the results simulated numerically. The viewing is done from an environment created in computer graphics in real time. In addition to concern about the full presentation of the phenomena involved, geometric consistency of the data presented and graphical realism, the main objective of the development of this application is the ability to work as a tool for data analysis, and is thus more a support for technicians, engineers and decision-makers. How is based on a three-dimensional computer graphics environment, display behavior of the various units (platforms, boats, mooring lines, risers, etc.) is facilitated, which can also noted the interactions between units. The user interface has been implemented in a way that was natural to the user, allowing access to all simulated data. Just as an example, the user can navigate in the environment and choice, with a click of the mouse, the mooring line it seems more tensioned and see in each segment the tension in which the segment is being submitted. 5 The TPN group of media makes possible the visualization and dissemination of the results from simulations and analyses in the laboratory. Some of the activities performed by the team are: Folder for submission to events; Projects databook (a CD containing all documents of the project with videos and images in Flash); Generation of videos from simulations conducted in the cluster of TPN; Website Maintenance; Modelling of oceanic and naval systems; Electronic model of mooring and risers system, besides floating units and other systems; 3D modeling, animation and generation of video to external projects; Key-words: Model electronics, modeling of ocean systems. 2. TPN Researches Inter Institution 2.1 Experimental Scale model tests in IPT Dr. Kazuo Hirata Dr. José Carlos Zannuto Prof. Dr. André Fujarra The Division of Technology for Transport of IPT is involved with this research checking and validating the hydrodynamic models used in the TPN, and measuring the coefficients needed to represent phenomena that has not been modeled numerically. Moreover measurements are performed in real scale. 2.2 Numerical Models for the Representation of mooring lines and risers contribution in Non-Linear Dynamic Behavior of Moored Floating Units.
