10 The Australian dairy industry The dairy industry is one of Australia s major rural industries. Based on a farmgate value of production of $4.0 billion in 2011/12, it ranks third behind the beef and wheat industries. Approximately 43,000 people are directly employed on dairy farms and in manufacturing plants. Related transport and distribution activities, and research and development projects, represent further employment associated with the industry. Dairy is a major rural industry and adds value along the entire supply chain. Much of this processing occurs close to farming areas, thereby generating economic activity and employment in country regions. Dairy farming regions Dairying is a well-established industry across temperate and some subtropical areas of Australia. While the bulk of milk production occurs in the south-east corner of the country, all states have dairy industries that supply fresh drinking milk to nearby cities and towns. Most states product a range of high-quality consumer products, including fresh milks, custards, yogurts and a wide variety of cheese types. The manufacturing of longer shelf life products, such as cheese and specialised milk powders, is steadily becoming more concentrated in the south-east region of Australia ( A changing environment Due to environmental issues and demand for increased productivity and efficiency, farmers have made many changes to their farm management practices including soil testing, fodder conservation, supplementary feeding, improved animal genetics, the use of new milking technology and the widespread use of computers to record and monitor herd performance. These changes have created the need for a more highly trained, qualified and skilled dairy farming workforce. 16 Course information Kayla Bradley Certificate II in Agriculture, Terang Campus, Victoria Student profile Kayla Bradley is a year 10 student from Simpson in the Western District and lives and breathes dairy! The New Zealand born student has grown up on a dairy farm and since 2000 has lived in Australia. For Kayla it was a natural thing to enrol in the school based apprenticeship course, Certificate II in Agriculture. The course is run one day a week over two years and is completed while still at school adding an extra dimension to Kayla s school curriculum. I like school but I much prefer being on the farm. With one day a fortnight on farm learning practical skills and one day a fortnight in the classroom the course provides plenty of knowledge that Kayla says she wouldn t learn on the farm alone. Learning why things are done the way they are is great I even help dad with new ideas for the farm. Kayla has a huge interest in showing cows and won a junior leader champion at International Dairy Week in 2011 and participated in the National All Dairy Breeds Youth Camp in January She has travelled all over Australia to show cows which she does for the experience. It s really what sparked my interest in dairying as a career. Kayla plans to commence the Certificate III in Agriculture in 2013 when she undertakes Year 12 and is thinking of farm management in the future. 14 National Centre for Dairy Education Australia course guide

21 Cameron Ball Certificate IV Warragul Campus, Victoria Student profile Growing up in The Basin in Melbourne s south-eastern suburbs, Cameron Ball loved visiting his grandparent s dairy farm at Rutherglen in Northern Victoria, but never considered a dairy career. I did an apprenticeship as a cabinet maker and became a fully qualified carpenter, Cameron, 29 said. I did that for seven years before deciding I needed to spend more time outdoors and I was missing cows! After completing Cups on Cups off in Warragul, Cameron discovered his passion for not only dairy, but for learning. Cameron understood it was important to have formal qualifications to assist his desire to work in the dairy industry and went through the skills recognition process with the NCDEA. He was awarded a Certificate III in Agriculture based on his previous work experience. Now Cameron is a farm hand at the Pembroke farm in Trafalgar, Gippsland and is continuing his studies. The NCDEA is a great way to study, he said. Not only does it give me the theory, I got hands on experience and it was really valuable to meet other students. I m the sort of person who wants to know as much as possible, he said. I ll confess that I m not a big fan of writing but I get a lot from reading up on topics and then putting it into practice. As Cameron has progressed through the NCDEA career pathway, the more he has experienced the dairy industry. He regularly keeps his eyes open for short programs, industry programs and scholarships. As a result, Cameron was a recipient of a joint Gardiner Foundation and Dairy Australia Dairy Industry Scholarship and was awarded a place on the Don Campbell Memorial Tour. It is these types of programs that have fuelled Cameron s passion for both learning and the dairy industry. I love working in dairy and highly recommend studying through the NCDEA, he said. It s a great way to get that hands on experience and create a network of like-minded people that I can discuss the industry with. 19

24 Lisa Howlett Advanced Diploma, Warragul Campus, Victoria Student profile After a 20 year break from dairying, Lisa Howlett was looking forward to getting back into the industry. However, she was well aware that the dairy industry, methods and techniques would have changed in that time. Lisa, along with her husband Malcolm, decided that developing their skills through the NCDEA was the best approach to make a successful return to the industry. I knew the industry would have changed after such a long time out of the industry, Lisa said. So we started with courses such as Cups on Cups off, Feeding Pastures for Profit and Countdown Down Under. As Lisa learnt more about the NCDEA, she decided to complete the Skills Recognition process. After being awarded the Diploma in Agriculture, she is now combining completing her Advanced Diploma with working on-farm. The Advanced Diploma is run one day per week with students from across the state participating in training online. The NCDEA environment is great, Lisa said. The trainers are knowledgeable, easy to work with and the flexibility to combine study with working is vital. Currently milking 250 cows on 300 acres at Glengarry (near Traralgon, Victoria), Lisa has seen her commitment to developing her skills and gaining formal qualifications as key to her success. The farm is a business so it has to be profitable and sustainable, Lisa said. The NCDEA courses have helped us make better decisions that lead to improved productivity and greater profitability. It has helped make better decisions that contribute to the sustainability of our business, Lisa said. The industry keeps evolving, you have to keep up to date or it will pass you by. 22 National Centre for Dairy Education Australia 2014 course guide
