CONTINUING NURSING STUDIES RE-ENTRY PROGRAM FOR REGISTERED NURSES REGISTRATION INFORMATION UPDATED OCTOBER 24, 2014

1 Introduction Welcome to Continuing Nursing Studies. The Re-Entry Program for Registered Nurses developed by the Centre for Nursing Studies (CNS) is designed for nurses who do not meet the current practice requirements within their provincial regulatory body (i.e., Registered Nurses who have been out of practice for a minimum of five (5) years) or for nurses who hold current registration but desire, for a variety of reasons, a review of nursing theory and clinical practice. Successful completion of the program allows nurses to reapply for active licensure. Content and Delivery The program has theoretical, laboratory and clinical components. Students are required to complete nine (9) general nursing courses and one (1) specialty theory course. The selection of the specialty theory course will be made on an individual basis. The theoretical components of the program are offered by distance delivery through print-based or online courses designed for adult learners. The online version of the courses is provided by Distance Education, Learning and Teaching Support (DELTS) at Memorial University of Newfoundland. Distance delivery makes the Re-Entry Program for Registered Nurses available to all nurses throughout the province of Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada and abroad. The Therapeutic and Professional Communication, Medication Administration, Health Assessment, Complex and Emerging Health Challenges and Clinical Skills courses require students to complete an on-site laboratory component. Students will also be required to complete a preceptor led clinical experience in Medical-Surgical Nursing Practice. Management The Associate Director for Non-Degree Programs, a Program Facilitator, Registrar and a Secretary administer and coordinate the daily operations of the program. Admission Policies Completion of all forms in this package. Verification of non-practising membership or a referral letter from Association of Registered Nurses of Newfoundland and Labrador (ARNNL) is required. Prior to commencing the clinical experience, students must submit the clinical preplacement requirements outlined in this package. The cost of the program is $4, plus the cost of the required textbooks. This must be paid in full before admission to the program. Students will not be accepted into the program until full tuition payment is received.

2 Applications will be processed during the intake months of August for a September start, December for a January start and April for a May start. Students must have computer access as theory components are offered through online delivery. Program Overview The program is divided into two components. First Component: Nine General Nursing Courses This component is comprised of nine (9) required general nursing courses. Included in these nine courses is a clinical skills course focusing on competencies routinely performed in the medicalsurgical setting, and a medical-surgical clinical placement. Students must complete all nine general nursing courses. The Profession of Nursing in Canada Therapeutic and Professional Communication Pharmacology Medication Administration Health Assessment Health Challenges and Nursing Interventions Complex and Emerging Health Challenges Clinical Skills Medical-Surgical Nursing Practice Second Component: Specialty Courses Students must complete one (1) specialty theory course. Specialty course selection will be determined on an individual basis. Nursing the Childbearing Family Child Health Nursing Mental Health Nursing Community Health Nursing Students are required to obtain 70% in each theory course. This is determined through pre-set written examinations, which are all multiple choice. If the student is unsuccessful in the final exam for any course, a supplementary exam is permitted. If the student is unsuccessful in the supplementary exam, withdrawal from the course is required. Tutoring and special assistance is offered as necessary throughout the program. Exams may be written at the CNS or an approved rural exam site with an exam invigilator approved by the program facilitator.

3 Clinical Skills Once students have successfully completed courses one through seven, they will commence a 5- day on-site lab component. Prior to this, students will view a set of online videos of common clinical procedures. During the lab component, students will have an opportunity to practice the following skills with the guidance of a faculty member: Hand hygiene and Safe Patient and Resident Handling Wound Care Drainage Devices Respiratory Care Elimination Intravenous Insertion and Therapy Blood and Blood Products Central Venous Access Devices Nasogastric/Enteral Tubes Chest Tubes Epidural/Patient-Controlled Analgesia Nursing Documentation and Transcription of Orders Lab testing follows completion of the practice session. Students will be asked by the lab faculty to demonstrate various aspects of health assessment and selected clinical skills. Students must pass the lab testing session before starting the preceptored clinical experience. Medical-Surgical Nursing Practice Prior to the clinical placement, all clinical pre-placement requirement criteria must be met. Meditech training, Fit Testing, glucometer training and Pyxis training (if required) will be completed at the CNS through the Instructional Resource Centre (IRC). Clinical components are mastery oriented and students are required to obtain 100% mastery of all clinical competencies before graduation from the program. While 160 hours of clinical time is the minimum time required, extra time can be arranged if needed. Specialty Courses A specialty theory course must be completed by the student. The selection of the course will be made on an individual basis. A passing grade of 70% must be achieved in this component. The Program can be completed at the student s own pace with a maximum time limit for completion of two years.

4 Learning Materials and Resources Extensive study materials have been prepared by the CNS. These materials include: online study courses via DELTS print based study courses access to other learning materials (e.g., textbooks, journal articles, and audio-visual materials) The self-instructional courses provide guidance by including the following: specific learning objectives directed reading in accompanying textbooks extra information not provided in textbooks comprehension checks a post-test with answers to allow the student to judge his/her readiness to take the proctored exams videos/dvds Instructional materials and resources for the clinical skills lab component are provided by the CNS. These include: access to lab faculty up-to-date equipment for various clinical skills ***Students are responsible for the purchase of the required textbooks/resources*** Evaluation of the Program Evaluation is ongoing throughout the program. Both students and faculty are encouraged to write or verbalize their thoughts on how the program is being managed at least once each month. An evaluation form is used for written feedback and students are encouraged to provide both negative and positive comments about the program. These forms are then reviewed by the program facilitator. Changes and improvements are made where possible. Advantages This program is independent and self-directed, allowing students to proceed at their own pace. Students can study at any time that is convenient allowing them to continue other professional and personal roles. Individual faculty support is readily available by telephone or to deal with difficult concepts or to discuss study habits, time management, etc. Students can complete the entire program without having to leave their home community (exceptions apply for laboratory and clinical experiences). Students have access to lab faculty for the on-site lab practice and testing sessions. Peer support is encouraged by the program facilitator.

Additional learning materials are readily available upon request through the CNS. Clinical preceptors are highly qualified professionals who work with re-entry students to reorient them to the acute care practice setting. 5

7 Centre for Nursing Studies Continuing Nursing Studies Re-Entry Program For Registered Nurses IMMUNIZATION REQUIREMENTS The following immunization requirements are clinical agency requirements and must be completed before a student can begin a clinical placement. You may obtain this required information from your local Health and Community Services or from your family doctor. Student Responsibility VACCINE Tetanus, Diphtheria and accellular pertussis (Tdap) Polio Vaccine Measles, Mumps, Rubella (MMR) Your vaccination must be within the past 10 years. If you are due for a booster, one dose of Tdap vaccine is required if you have not previously received a dose of pertussis-containing vaccine in adulthood (18 years of age and older). Some agencies where you may wish to complete a clinical experience during your program may require documentation of having received a polio vaccine as a pre-placement requirement. All students must have evidence of 2 doses of the MMR vaccine received after 1 year of age. TB Skin Test (A 2-step [5-tu] Mantoux) TB Skin Test (A 2-step [5-tu] Mantoux) You are required to submit documentation and dates of both Step 1 and Step 2 of the TB skin test. Each step consists of an intradermal injection and skin reading for a total of 4 visits. Your Public Health Clinic can do this for you. This does not need to be ordered by a physician. This is a clinical agency requirement and you will NOT be permitted to enter the clinical setting without meeting the below requirements. If you ever had a 2-step TB Skin test performed, you will need a 1 step done no earlier than the date mentioned above. In this case, you will need to provide documentation for both sets of testing. Some international students may have had TB exposure or have received a TB vaccine and this will cause the TB test to be positive. To prove that it is not an active form of TB, the student will need to submit a recent chest X-ray and quantiferon blood work result along with physician documentation.

8 Hepatitis B What is Hepatitis B? Hepatitis B is one of several viruses that can cause hepatitis. Hepatitis B is found mainly in the blood, vaginal secretions, semen and serous fluids of an infected person How Can I Become Infected with Hepatitis B? Hepatitis B infection can be spread through having contact with the blood, semen, vaginal fluids, and other body fluids of someone who already has a hepatitis B infection. Who Is at Risk for Becoming Infected with Hepatitis B? Health care workers who will be repeatedly exposed to blood or blood products or to the risk of needle stick injury will be at risk for infection with the Hepatitis B virus. The Canadian Immunization Guidelines (2012) recommend the following Hepatitis B immunization schedule: 1. Receive 3 doses of the Hepatitis B Vaccine: 1 month between the 1st and 2nd dose and 5 months between 2 nd and 3 rd dose 2. After receiving 3 doses: Check HBsAB or anti-hbs level 1 month after the 3rd dose, if value greater than 10 IU/L, immunity is confirmed. 3. What do I do if I am not immune after 3 doses? If the value is less than 10 IU/L, the 3 dose series should be completed again, following the schedule outlined in # 1 and 2. Public Health Agency of Canada (2012). Canadian Immunization Guide (8th Ed.). hepb-eng.php Hepatitis B Varicella You are required to submit documentation confirming the dates that all 3 immunizations were received. If you have not received this series of immunizations, you will need to begin this process as soon as possible. You are required to have blood work for a varicella titre. If your results indicate that you do not have protective immunity, you are required to obtain 2 doses of the varicella vaccine given 4-6 weeks apart. The two (2) dose varicella vaccine regimen has to be completed by the end of September.
