3 Ethics for Addiction Counselors - 21st Century Issues Jeffrey Quamme, ICADC, ICCDP, MATS Jeffrey Quamme has been employed with the CCB since November of 2009, first serving as Associate Director until 2013, when he was promoted to Executive Director. Jeff plays many active roles in the International Certification & Reciprocity Consortium (IC&RC) including Co-Chair of the Co- Occurring Credentialing Committee and as a subject matter expert and item writer for the Alcohol and Drug Counselor (ADC) and Advanced Alcohol and Drug Counselor (AADC) credentials and exams. He has been retained by both publicly funded and privately financed addiction treatment facilities as a consultant for staff development. Additionally, with the national opioid crisis growing, Jeff s expertise in staff development for medication assisted treatment programs has made him a sought after contributor to the national discussion at NIDA, NIAAA, ONDCP and the United States Senate. O CTOBER 31, 2014 As we see changes in how addiction treatment is administered, we are forced to confront ethical dilemmas that we previously could not have imagined. While adhering to steadfast ethical guidelines that have guided our practice for many years, we must address the changes to a more recovery oriented process, increased access to information (including social media) and other technological advancements in order to continue to protect those who seek services. With this in mind, participants who complete this workshop will be able to: Identify the major service roles and the responsibilities for each Discuss the impact and implications of social media on the addiction treatment and recovery field Discuss the relationship between professional ethics and the law Practice ethical decision making through the use of case vignettes

Her areas of focus include autoimmune and inflammatory conditions and pain management. She has maintained a private practice over the past five years and has a breadth of experience in public health and disease management. She combines both her clinical and business knowledge and works in a leadership capacity at a federally qualified health center. She also acts as an adjunct faculty member at University of Bridgeport's College of Naturopathic Medicine. Dr. Patterson has served on many boards including Sickle Cell Disease Association of America, NAACP Health Chair for Bridgeport, CT and is currently a Board Director for the American Association of Naturopathic Physicians, Academic Consortium for Complementary and Alternative Health and is a Connecticut Health Foundation Health Leadership Fellow. Dr. Patterson's work has been featured and published both locally and nationally. CAM (Complimentary Alternative Medicine) is increasingly popular in the western world for the prevention and treatment of a variety disorders. It has been utilized by many persons of all cultures and ethnicities across the world, and it is also heavily culturally influenced. 5 Transitioning from DSM-IV TR to DSM V- Intake to Treatment Planning Sandra Valente, Ph.D, LADC, LPC, CCS Sandra Valente has been a Professor of Psychology and Coordinator of the Drug and Alcohol Recovery (DARC) program at Naugatuck Valley Community College for the past 14 years, as well as a psychotherapist in private practice. Her areas of specialty include addiction and mental health assessment and counseling, trauma, anxiety, bipolar disorder and divorce issues. She has presented workshops for mental health professionals at local and national conferences and has several publications in addiction and mental health treatment. Additionally, Dr. Valente currently sits on the Executive Committee of the Connecticut Certification Board in the role of Secretary. N OVEMBER 14, 2014 The DSM V was published in May, 2013 and is the first major revision since the publication of the DSM IV-TR in The release of the DSM V brings some radical new changes which have been met with both praise and criticism from mental health professionals. With successful completion of this workshop, attendees will: Increase knowledge of diagnostic changes from DSM - IV to DSM -V Develop knowledge of changes from axial diagnoses to the new summary format Increase skills in utilization of the DSM V to develop a working diagnosis and treatment plan. 6 Engaging the Co-Occurring Client Using the Grinch, Pinocchio and Rudolph, Too! N OVEMBER 21, 2014 Thomas Greaney, LADC, CCDP, SAP In 15-years as a clinician, Tom, has developed an expertise in using creative approaches to individual and group therapy to engage clients, retain them in treatment and help counselors stave off burnout. He sees his creative treatment topics to be particularly beneficial to clients with the dual diagnosis of both a substance use and mental health disorder. Greaney believes using compelling visual and audio materials and hands on activities makes key facets of recovery more memorable and applicable to the lives of recovering persons. He is the sole-proprietor of New London, Conn. based Savvy Communications, a private practice outpatient treatment company. Greaney earned his Master's of Education Degree in Rehabilitation Counseling in 1999 from Springfield College in Mass. He obtained a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Communication Studies in 1979 from the State University of New York College at Oswego. Neuroscience tells us that an individual s brain processes visual information 60,000 times faster than text and that about 65 percent of the US population are visual learners (The Visual Teaching Alliance). Engaging and retaining clients, while averting counselor burnout, is key to the recovery and treatment process. Participants in this training will, in essence, take part in abbreviated versions of the creative groups Tom has developed during 15 years as a clinician, mentor to young men in a Connecticut preparatory school and through his affinity for Pinocchio and the downtrodden Grinch. 7 Supporting Sexual Health of LGBT Individuals in Early Recovery D ECEMBER 5, A.M.-4:30 P. M. Juline Koken, Ph.D Juline Koken, Ph.D., is Assistant Professor of Health Sciences at LaGuardia Community College, CUNY and a Faculty Affiliate with the Center for HIV Educational Studies and Training in New York City. Dr. Koken s research focuses on developing and implementing effective approaches for substance abuse treatment and HIV prevention, and the health of gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender individuals and sex workers of all genders. She is an expert in Motivational Interviewing, an evidence supported approach for promoting health behavior change. Dr. Koken is a member of the Motivational Interviewing Network of Trainers (MINT), and provides training, supervision and fidelity monitoring to agencies in New York and around the country. Sexuality is often one of the most fragile areas of a recovering individual s torn self-esteem. Many of the issues of love and relationships, that come up for individuals in recovery from addictive disorders, may be related to sexuality. The needs of LGBT people in prevention, treatment and recovery require culturally competent care to ensure their place on the path to a full and sustained recovery. this special event.
