Why are partnerships important?

The U.S. has fallen to 12th among 36 developed nations in the number of college graduates, behind Canada, South Korea, and Russia. Fewer than 42 % of Americans between the ages of 25 and 34 have earned college degrees.

African American Year Olds 69.70% 30.30% With a College Degree Without a College Degree Source: U.S. Census Bureau, Current Population Survey, 2010

Hispanics Years Old 19.80% 81.20% With a College Degree Without a College Degree Source: U.S. Census Bureau, Current Population Survey, 2010

President Obama: Restore America s Leadership in Higher Education by having the highest proportion of students graduating from college in the world by 2020 Lumina s Big Goal: 60 percent of Americans to have a postsecondary degree by 2025 The College Board: Increase the proportion of 25- to 34-year-olds who hold an associate degree or higher to 55 percent by the year 2025 in order to make America the leader in educational attainment in the world.

Texas Closing the Gaps in Success Increase the number of students completing associate s degrees to 34,600 by 2015 bachelor s degrees to 104,000 by 2015 Increase the number of students earning degrees in engineering, science, math, allied health, nursing, and education

Texas Closing the Gaps in Success By 2015, increase the number of Hispanic students completing bachelor s degrees, associate s degrees and certificates to 50,000 The Texas State Data Center projects that by 2020, Hispanics will make up the majority of Texas population.

"The Texas of today is the U.S. of tomorrow. Steve H. Murdock, Ph.D. Department of Sociology, Rice University former Director of the U.S. Bureau of the Census

Part of the challenge in reaching the goal of 55 percent of young Americans with an associate degree or higher lies in erasing disparities in educational attainment for low-income students and underrepresented minorities. By eliminating the severity of disparities between underrepresented minorities and white Americans, it is estimated that more than half the degrees needed to meet the 55 percent goal would be produced. The College Completion Agenda 2010 Progress Report

79% of El Paso s undergraduate students from El Paso County are from zip codes with per capita incomes of less than $19,900 / year.

Students from the highest income families are almost 8X as likely as those from the lowest income families to earn a degree by age 24. The College Completion Agenda 2010 Progress Report

Dr. Diana Natalicio
