2 About Stevenson-Carson School District MESSAGE FROM THE SUPERINTENDENT Dear Community Members, Thank you for taking the time to read our Annual Report to the Community. I hope the information you find here helps you to get a sense of our District. These quantitative results show data on all areas of our schools. The qualitative results you will see by being around our students and teachers. We have lots of success stories that aren t shown in all of the numbers. We have a Knowledge Bowl team that places at State competition almost every year. We have athletic teams that go to State Competitions and win not only in athletics, but also in academics. Our students give several hours of community service back to the community and enjoy being a part of a great school system here at Stevenson-Carson. Our District is committed to looking at the facts and then working to make changes when necessary. Our Academic Team this year has determined our number one goal to be to increase our on-time graduation rate to 95% by We are focusing our efforts K-12 to figure out ways to help all students succeed. 3 I-728 Annual Report OUR TEACHERS In the school year, 100 percent of our teachers were highly qualified. All paraprofessionals working in the Title I program met federal standards. TEACHER STATISTICS Classroom Teachers 58 Average Years of Teaching 14.4 Experience Teachers with at least a 81% Master s Degree Total number of core academic 353 classes FINANCIAL DATA In the school year, approximately $10,522* was spent per student Full Time Equiavalent (FTE) including transportation costs. Per pupil expenditures are a combination of state and federal sources. General Fund revenues were approximately $12,367,406 while expenditures were approximately $13,268,938. The District concluded the school year with a General Fund balance of $7,172,735 with $1,000,000 of that amount restricted for capital projects and technology. * This reflects all revenue sources, including categorical funding. ABOUT INITIATIVE-728 In 2000, Washington voters approved Initiative 728, which directs a portion of state property tax, state lottery, and emergency reserve fund revenues into a new student achievement fund. In 2009, the state legislature revoked I-728 funds and the final year of the allocation was , however, some funds were disbursed in July of and were carried over to the school year. Money allocated for school districts to be used for: class size reduction extended learning opportunities professional development for educators early assistance for pre-kindergarten children building improvements related to class size reduction and extended learning. 8 Kaplan Academy* *Beginning in the school year, Stevenson-Carson School District contracts with Columbia Virtual Academy (CVA) to provide an online school for students in our region and across the state. CVA replaced Kaplan Academy of Washington (KAWA) but because this report includes data for , the following data refers to Kaplan. ABOUT KAPLAN ACADEMY Kaplan Academy of Washington (KAWA) is a virtual school serving middle and high school students throughout the state. KAWA is a tuition-free public school, offering students a variety of courses supported by flexible scheduling, individualized instruction and relevant, engaging curriculum. KAWA operates in partnership with the Stevenson-Carson School District. An online learning program offers flexibility for students who have found difficulty in the regular high school environment. Students are able to access their coursework and class discussions from virtually anywhere at any time as long as there is an Internet connection. Courses are designed to cater to different skill levels, facilitate learning and keep students motivated. SCHOOL PROGRAMS Basic Skills A comprehensive middle school/high school curriculum is offered. Academic advisors are available to assist students in all aspects of their online schooling experience.
