1 Minnesota CLE s Special Report New Lawyer Initiative A Multifaceted Effort to Transition New Lawyers to the Practice of Law Minnesota CLE is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit corporation established by the Minnesota State Bar Association. Minnesota CLE s mission is to provide high quality, accessible legal education to Minnesota attorneys. Minnesota CLE is widely recognized as one of the premier legal education providers in the nation. New Lawyer Seminars & Training The Minnesota New Lawyer Website Online Library Scholarships & Discounts

2 Minnesota leads the nation in providing services for new lawyers to transition into the practice of law. For decades Minnesota CLE has been a national leader in providing training for new lawyers. Since 2012, our New Lawyer Initiative has provided more than $250,000 in training, opportunities, resources and scholarships for new lawyers. New Lawyer Experience Minnesota CLE s flagship program for new lawyers, the New Lawyer Experience, is now underwritten almost entirely by Minnesota CLE. First-year new lawyers can attend for free and second- and third-year new lawyers can attend for only $45. This conference brings together some of Minnesota s best and brightest attorneys and judges to provide substantive and practical training for beginning attorneys. Your First Courses For those new lawyers considering opening their own law firm, Minnesota CLE offers Starting Your Own Solo or Small Firm. Additional training opportunities include Minnesota CLE s Your First Series that provides substantive training in numerous practice areas including contracts, will drafting, litigation practice, real estate, family law and more. Each of these programs is subsidized by Minnesota CLE and allows young lawyers to attend at minimal cost. Minnesota New Lawyer Website An exciting new feature of the New Lawyer Initiative is the Minnesota New Lawyer Website, This website, designed just for new Minnesota attorneys, provides a wealth of practice resources. The new website is the first of its kind in the U.S. Scholarship Program To allow new lawyers to attend more Minnesota CLE seminars, the Minnesota CLE Board of Directors has established a dedicated scholarship fund for new lawyers who are unemployed or underemployed. This scholarship fund provides the necessary resources for lawyers in their first three years of practice to attend a wide array of helpful Minnesota CLE seminars including our great lineup of Institutes. This scholarship fund has been well received and well used by new lawyers. Seminars The New Lawyer Experience Expert, Real-World Advice From Top Minnesota Lawyers and Judges The New Lawyer Experience is the flagship program for new Minnesota attorneys. This conference is offered twice each year and is attended by more than 350 new lawyers. The program offers more than thirty different small group sessions including substantive law training, procedural practice pointers and sessions that provide guidance for gaining success in a law practice, plus follow-up live webcasts allowing participants to delve deeper into subjects of particular interest. Some of Minnesota s very best attorneys and judges regularly teach at the New Lawyer Experience, providing personal examples and behind the scenes insights that provide important instruction and encouragement for the new lawyer. The program provides a great opportunity for the new attorney to meet and to mingle with some of Minnesota s very best. Courses to Jump-Start New Lawyer Discounts Minnesota CLE also offers general price discounts to all new lawyers on its seminars, Season Pass programs and other products. This new lawyer initiative is the most extensive effort of any bar association in the U.S. and is designed to help new lawyers more easily transition into the practice of law in the Minnesota bar.

In this time of difficulty for new lawyers, many are forced by circumstance to open their own law firm. Minnesota CLE s Starting Your Own Solo or Small Firm seminar is designed to help the new lawyer, ease the transition, provide as much practical help as possible, and alert the new lawyer to the traps and difficulties that can arise in the practice of law. 7 for New Lawyers Savings More Than 2000 Forms at Your Fingertips A Starting Place for Drafting Documents The Online Library contains more than 2000 forms that the new attorney can use as a starting point or as a type of checklist as they draft their own. Many of the forms are annotated or annotated in part, explaining the specific purpose of the paragraph or section. Most of the forms deal with issues of Minnesota law, though some also deal with federal law concerns. Multiple forms in a single area allow the new attorney to compare and contrast the approaches taken by the drafters. Generally, the forms in the library are attached to a substantive chapter or discussion which further guides the new attorney in preparing their own forms. In addition, Minnesota CLE has a series of scholarship programs that provide help to attorneys who work in legal aid offices and for attorneys experiencing financial difficulties.
