5 Introduction We are forced to change our University password once every 12 months. Sometimes we forget our password. The University's Password Manager is available online anywhere at any time, providing quick access to the following features: Update your personal and/or mobile number (used to reset your forgotten password) Reset your forgotten password Change your password 5

7 Why? To give staff and students the ability to change and reset their University password at any time. To reduce Service Desk calls. Since December 1 st 2014 the Technology Service Desk received 1,358 calls related to password issues. 7

9 How to register Open Password Manager and log in with your username and password. 9

10 You will be prompted to register your personal address and mobile number. Register both! Once you have entered your details and confirmed them, you will receive a confirmation 10

11 Update Please use Password Manager when your personal address or mobile phone number changes. Once updated, you will receive a confirmation . 11

12 Change Open Password Manager and log in with your username and password. Select the 'Change Password' option. Remember to update saved passwords on mobile devices for and wireless. 12

13 Forgotten To use this feature, you must have previously entered your personal address and/or mobile number. Open Password Manager and use the 'I have forgotten my password' button 13

14 Enter your Username and click search A code will be sent to your personal address (and mobile number, if you have added this to your profile). Please enter this code in the prompt box in Password Manager and click 'check code 14

15 Once the code has been validated, you will be prompted to enter a new password twice, and you will also receive an confirmation that your password has been changed. Remember to update saved passwords on mobile devices. 15

16 FAQ Q. Why can't I use my University address? A. If you forget your password, you will be unable to access your University account. If you register your personal address, you'll still be able to check this for your temporary code Q. Should I register both my personal address AND mobile number? A. You should register a personal address, but we recommend you also use your mobile number as a backup means of resetting your password Q. What if I change my address or mobile number? A. You can visit the password portal at any time to update your details. We recommend updating your details as soon as they change 16

17 Q. My password has expired - can I reset it online? A. Please call the Technology Service Desk on Your password will be un-expired and then you can reset it online via Password Manager Q. How long is the password reset code valid for? A. 10 minutes. If you do not reset your password in this time, you can request another code Q. How do I reset my forgotten password if I haven't registered my personal address? A. You will need to attend a University campus in person with photo ID. Once your password has been reset, you will be prompted to enter your personal address and mobile phone number which can be used in future to reset your password online. 17

19 Deciding on a strong password Password Rules Case-sensitive Between 7 and 50 characters in length Include at least one number Include at least one non-alphanumeric character New password must not have been used previously 19

20 Deciding on a strong password What is a strong password? At least 7 characters in length (Wow! That s lucky.) Complex i.e. a combination of letters, numbers and symbols. Not guessable or reusable The longer the better. 20

21 Deciding on a strong password What is not a strong password(things to avoid)? A password similar to one you already use, such as changing the final character of your previous password. Use easily guessable/obtainable information such as your Birthday, School Name, Family Members etc. Using the same password across many systems (personal and work-related) 21
