4 3 Rumble in the Northwoods: Fall Ride reaches quarter century milestone By Abigail Wix Tomahawk Leader Reporter Can you feel the rumble? Do you hear the roar? Then it must be the steady thunder of thousands of motorcycles on the streets of Tomahawk as 40,000-plus visitors gather for camaraderie among bikers and locals alike during the 25-year milestone Tomahawk Fall Ride Sept A quarter of a century of history in the making, the 2006 Ride celebrates years of riding, friendship and fund raising for the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA). To observe the historic 25-year marker, a special unveiling of a Tomahawk Fall Ride envelope with commemorative 25 th anniversary cancel, along with the newly-released Harley- Davidson motorcycle postage stamps, will take place Thursday, Sept. 14. Representatives from the United States Post Office, Harley-Davidson and MDA will be on hand at the Tomahawk Post Office on West Wisconsin Avenue for the 10 a.m. revealing. The commemorative envelopes will be available for purchase at SARA Park throughout the four-day event. Riding for MDA, community The motorcycle rally is all for a good cause: It benefits the Ride s longtime charity, MDA. The event is the largest motorcycle gathering in the state and the biggest fund raiser for that cause in northern Wisconsin. The venue has raised more than $1 million for families living with neuromuscular diseases in Lincoln County since 1983, when organizers of the Fall Ride began donating to MDA. More than $117,000 was raised in 2005 alone. Proceeds make up about one-third of the MDA North Central Chapter s annual budget. Monies raised during the Ride provide care and research for clients within that chapter, which includes clinics in Green Bay, Marshfield and Marquette, Mich. Volunteer chapters are located in Wausau and Green Bay. This is the 25th anniversary of the Fall Ride and on behalf of MDA, we are very excited about that, observed MDA Divisional Field Representative Lisa Lodde. The Tomahawk Fall Ride is the largest fund raiser for MDA in northern Wisconsin and we re always grateful to visit Tomahawk, the community, business and riders and we re grateful to everyone who helps MDA. The Ride also creates a significant economic impact on local communities. According to the Wisconsin Department of Tourism, there was $20 million in direct spending during the 2005 Tomahawk Fall Ride, creating an overall economic impact of $140 million. Last year marked the first rally that was manned by MDA. Continued on Page 4

17 Post Office puts mark on Tomahawk Fall Ride 16 By Jed Buelow Tomahawk Leader Reporter It should be no surprise the Tomahawk Post Office is taking part in the 25 th annual Fall Ride after all, motorcycles were once used to deliver the mail. To commemorate the partnership and the Ride s quartercentury mark, the Post Office, 311 W. Wisconsin Ave., will be hosting a ceremony at 10 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 14. As part of the celebration, a first-day cancellation will be unveiled. The pictorial cancellations are postmarks offered by the Postal Service to commemorate local community events, such as fairs, conventions or other types of local celebrations. They re initiated by sponsors and organizers of events and may feature words and/or graphics relating to those events. The hatchet-shaped cancellation (pictured above) will feature the words Tomahawk Fall Ride and MDA. It also makes note of the 25 th anniversary. According to Tomahawk Postmaster Teri Cernoch, the cancellations will be available for 30 days after the unveiling. Collectors from across the United States will be sending stamps and envelopes for cancellation, she said. The cancellations are a one-time deal created for collectors and the event. Attendees wanting to take home the historical marking also will have the chance. The Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA) will be selling cachets envelopes with decorative emblems and American motorcycles commemorative stamps that will be marked with the cancellation. Four motorcycle stamps were recently unveiled during the 66 th Annual Sturgis Motorcycle Rally. The 1918 Cleveland, 1940 Indian Four, 1965 Harley-Davidson Electra Glide and circa 1970 Chopper stamps mark the first time a motorcycle has been used as a pictorial by the Postal Service. The ceremony will allow us the opportunity to promote the stamp and 25-year history of the Fall Ride, Cernoch said. Overall, it should be a very good time. The Sept. 14 ceremony also will feature Harley- Davidson memorabilia and a 1965 Harley-Davidson Electra Glide, like the one featured on one of the stamps, will be on display. Guest speakers will mark the event including one who took part in the first Tomahawk Fall Ride.

Following a couple of serious accidents on the racing circuit, the daredevil decided to try his hand at stunt shows and has thrilled audiences ever since jumping cars and semis. 20 19 Rolling art: Jesse Hunter Meet custom raffle bike painter By Abigail Wix Tomahawk Leader Reporter Jesse Hunter has always liked art. Even as a child, he could be found drawing or painting. Today, committing to that talent has paid off, says the Harley-Davidson Tomahawk Operations new product technician, custom painter of this year s Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA) raffle motorcycles for the Tomahawk Fall Ride. Hunter, a Rhinelander native, spent 10 years in the military after high school before returning to the Northwoods where he hooked up with a job at the Harley- Davidson Somo Avenue plant in Tomahawk. Having owned his first motorcycle at the age of 13 and a Harley- Davidson since 1983, the position with the motorcycle company intrigued him. Enter Hunter s artistic abilities. The artist was a painter at the Somo facility for about three years and he also worked in parts assembly, attempting to learn the whole process of the plant, he Continued on Page 20 Contributed Photo

21 20 Custom Bike Painter Continued from Page 19 noted. Custom paint started coming on the scene for Harley-Davidson around 1999 to 2000, Hunter observed. With a job opening in the field right here in Tomahawk, Hunter glided into his creative niche. He is now a new product technician at the newest local Harley-Davidson plant on Kaphaem Road. Hunter had already dabbled in custom painting. As a teen, he worked at a vehicle body shop and picked up on the trade. In the late 1970s, he gave a motorcycle an original look for the first time. Snowmobiles, helmets, snowboards, golf clubs, shotguns just about anything that paint will stick to followed with flares of Hunter s artistic edge. Coming up with ideas to depict in paint isn t too difficult, he notes. I try to find ideas they like and get as much information as possible, Hunter said. I haven t had an unhappy person yet. When the Tomahawk Fall Ride rolls into town, attendees can witness Hunter s work on two Harley- Davidson motorcycles being raffled for MDA proceeds. He s volunteered his time and talent for the last five years. It s a good cause, he relayed. Since Hunter has no way of knowing the new owner before he puts brush to metal, he sits down with a blank sheet of paper and pencil, and starts sketching potential designs until something comes along that I like. This year s bikes are a 2006 Harley-Davidson Ultra Classic Electra Glide featuring an orange, black and white theme, and a Sportster with a blue and metal scheme. It s something that I m good at and like to do, Hunter observed of custom painting. You start with a black gas tank and you end up with flames and skulls. It s amazing what you can do. Harley-Davidson has fully supported Hunter s position, he said. The company has sent him to air-brushing school that featured a world-renowned artist. Hunter also recently completed his computer graphics degree at Nicolet Area Technical College in Rhinelander. Normally I would draw things like fine lines by hand, he said. Now, I can do it all on computer. It saves a lot of time. Harley-Davidson has been good to me and enabled me to get into this training.

32 31 FALL RIDE DATES TO 1982 A look back at first 24 By the Tomahawk Leader The Tomahawk Fall Ride rumbled to life in October 1982 with the North Country Riders Motorcycle Club. In that inaugural year, 21 riders reportedly participated. Money raised went to a charity, although not to MDA. Harley-Davidson, Inc. and the Harley Owners Group came on board in That year, about 300 riders on 160 motorcycles took part in an Oct. 8 event. Money was raised for MDA, Harley-Davidson s charity of choice, through a $2 registration fee. The total donation to MDA was $350. Participants that year went on a 90-mile ride along Lincoln County back roads. Afterwards, they were treated to free beer, brats and door prizes at the Tomahawk Harley-Davidson plant. In hopes of better motorcycling weather, the event was moved to early September in About 1,200 people on 676 cycles participated, raising $3,200 for MDA. The event moved permanently to SARA Park in Attendance estimates soared to 5,000 people and 1,500 motorcycles that year, and the donation to MDA neared $10,000. The popular bike raffle was added a year later. A 1990 Harley-Davidson Sportster was the first cycle given away and was won by a Merrill man. Event organizers upped the ante on the raffle bike, offering a brand new Big Twin FLHS Electra Glide Sport. Raffle tickets sold well and more than $20,000 was raised for MDA. The brand new Tomahawk Harley-Davidson North Plant opened for tours during the 1995 Fall Ride. The crowd was estimated to be about 13,000 strong at its Saturday afternoon peak. All 30,000 raffle tickets were sold, and the total donation to MDA topped $80,000. To commemorate the Green Bay Packers Super Bowl championship, the 1997 raffle bike was painted Green and Gold and personally autographed by Packer Coach Mike Holmgren, a Harley-Davidson enthusiast. The donation to MDA that year topped $100,000, with more than $67,000 raised from the bike raffle alone. Attendance estimates hovered around 30,000 people and 15,000 motorcycles. About 1,600 riders participated in nature Fun Runs and 1,000 rode in the Thunder Parade. A downtown street dance following the parade Friday night was added to the list of weekend activities. Harley-Davidson, the parent firm, marked its 100th anniversary in big fashion in Milwaukee in The celebration spilled over to Tomahawk s 2003 Fall Ride as Harley-Davidson s Tomahawk Operations noted another important milestone 40 years of being an integral part of the company and the Tomahawk community. A Blind Ride was offered during which the Tomahawk Lions Club and Northern Lights Harley Owners Group (HOG) took 14 visually impaired persons on the 18-mile Thunder Parade. Local MDA donations totaled, $112,000. Perfect weather Sept , 2004, drew an estimated 40,000 people and 20,000 motorcycles to the 23rd annual fourday ride. Afterwards, members of the Tomahawk Fall Ride Committee announced that $160,000 was raised for MDA, including $75,000 from raffle bike sales. 37 Open intoxicants have their place 36 By Jed Buelow Tomahawk Leader Reporter Attendees at this year s Tomahawk Fall Ride have one goal in mind, to have as much fun as possible. However, to insure the safety of riders and local residents, officers with the Tomahawk Police Department will be seeking out violators while enforcing Wisconsin s drinking laws. According to Tomahawk Police Chief Don Johnson, enforcing those rules has been an effort that has progressed from the experience of previous years. The last couple have run pretty smoothly, Johnson said of the Fall Ride. Our goal is to stress the point that people shouldn t be driving after they ve been drinking. Last year, the department issued six operating while intoxicated tickets during the event, equaling the number made in That s a large number for us; however, you put up to 18,000 people in the downtown area and the numbers aren t so outrageous, he said. If people choose to drink, they should make sure they have a safe ride or are at their endpoint. Options available for people who want to enjoy the night scene include having a designated driver or renting property or a motel room in the city. Lincoln County does not offer the Safe Ride Home Program, nor are taxi services available in the Tomahawk area. While the open intoxicant rules have remained the same over the past five years, the number of marker signs that show people where they can legally consume open beverages has increased. Johnson said the extra signage has reduced the number of violations. For the most part, people want to be in compliance, he said. If officers find someone with open intoxicants outside designated grounds, they may ask the offender to dump out the beverage or return to the assigned area. Violators also may be fined $160 for the offense. Areas where alcohol may be legally consumed during the Fall Ride include on public property and at all city parks which close at 10 p.m. During the event, beverages may be consumed in the sign-identified areas from 5 p.m. till midnight on Friday, and from 4 p.m. till 11 p.m. on Saturday. If people cooperate, things run smoothly, Johnson said. It makes our jobs easier in handling everyone.

40 39 Vision guides Thunder Parade: Sight not essential for fun ride By Jed Buelow Tomahawk Leader Reporter For the past four years, the Tomahawk Lions Club, along with the Northern Lights Harley Owners Group (HOG), have been extending the Harley-Davidson experience to those who are visually impaired. The acceleration, wind brushing past, the rumble of the engine the liberating feel of the open road are all reasons nearly 30 Northern Light members will be taking part in Friday night s annual Blind Ride, as part of the Tomahawk Fall Ride Thunder Parade. However, the main reason for their participation is the smile it brings to their passengers faces. For Tomahawk resident Leroy Wolf, 71, who s been without vision for the last half decade, the 18-mile Thunder Parade ride is exhilarating. You meet a lot of people along the way who are cheering and having cookouts. It s a fun thing for everyone, Wolf said. I ve logged 36 miles since, after never being on a bike in my life. After this year, it will be 54 and counting. Wolf said that while he no longer can see the bikes, just being able to hear them brings back memories. It s great to see the young and old people come together for the ride, he said. Everyone gets together. It s a camaraderie thing. Mary Cahn, Northern Lights HOG member, said she is again looking forward to taking part in the ride. Normally riding is a solitary experience. We get to tell our passengers about the crowd and surroundings, and it becomes a vocal, wonderful experience, Cahn said. Each year, the ride continues to grow. They really enjoy it, and each year many come back. Orrin Kolberg, Lions Club president, noted participants come from as far as Madison to experience the ride. He estimated over 25 visually-impaired children and adults would be participating in this year s event. Many of the visually impaired don t normally get to do things like this, and it s an absolute thrill for them, Kolberg said. The smiles on the children s faces makes it all worthwhile. The Lions Club also is grilling brats and burgers to Continued on Page 40

45 44 Tomahawk Leader Photo Welcome to Tomahawk bikers, visitors By Abigail Wix Tomahawk Leader Reporter Welcome to Tomahawk, home to 3,770 residents who love the city s forested landscapes, miles of waterfront and abundant wildlife. Tomahawk, founded by William H. Bradley, is celebrating its 120-year birthday in Bradley was the first to erect a dam here, with a paper mill to follow, the city s first industry. He also was instrumental in establishing the first school and had shares in the Marinette-Tomahawk Railway. Bradley was known as a man of public spirit and donated land for churches and parks. Bradley Park, with more than 1,000 acres of pristine virgin pine, is one example of a generous donation to the city. Nestled in the Wisconsin s Northwoods, Tomahawk strikes a balance between catering to tourism, with unique small businesses and recreational opportunities galore, and holds its own with industry, serving as home to two Harley-Davidson Motor Co. factories, Packaging Corporation of America, Louisiana-Pacific, Northland Stainless and Daigle Brothers and several others. The city offers a 4-year-old kindergarten through 12 th grade public school system as well as a private elementary school for its families. Look to any of the city s nine parks for a place to picnic, fish, swim or play sports. Home to more than 15 lakes and flowages, the region is an angler s paradise. More than 400 miles of snowmobile trails in the area entice travelers in the winter, while around 40 miles of ATV trails beckon enthusiasts in the summer and fall. 48 47 Representing MDA: Goodwill Ambassadors By Abigail Wix Tomahawk Leader Reporter It s what the Tomahawk Fall Ride is all about: Helping families dealing with muscular dystrophy. This year, three Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA) Goodwill Ambassadors will spread the word about MDA and its mission to stop neuromuscular diseases: Grace Mickelson, 11, Tomahawk, Emilee Lund, 11, Antigo, and Reva Wiedeman, 18, Rhinelander. We caught up with two of them: Grace Mickelson, 11, Tomahawk Tomahawk s own Gracie Mickelson was first diagnosed with Juvenile Dermatomyositis (JM), a form of muscular dystrophy, in 2000 when she was 5 years old. While the first years were tough on the young girl, today, Gracie says, I m feeling fine. Gracie is in sixth grade at Tomahawk Middle School. She has an avid interest in drama and portrayed an orphan on the Grace Mickelson stage of Oliver at Northern Lights Playhouse in Hazelhurst this summer. Gracie also enjoys cross country, softball and spending time with her cat, Palchard. I like seeing some of the different people that come around and the people that come to ride their Harleys, Gracie observed of her favorite Fall Ride ongoings. She also likes visiting with her friends who have neuromuscular diseases, the same friends she sees at the annual MDA Summer Camp. The Thunder Parade, where she rides on a motorcycle, is another of Gracie s favorite Fall Ride events. Emilee Lund, 11, Antigo Emilee Lund was diagnosed with limb-dirdle at birth. She is now a sixth grader at Antigo Middle School where she enjoys art. The youth also has a passion for swimming, traveling with her family and animals. I like to ride on the motorcycle, Emilee said of fun she s had at the Tomahawk Fall Ride. MDA Camp offers a time for Emilee to see her friends including Gracie who also have forms of MD. She likes meeting up with them during the Ride as well.

52 51 Harley-Davidson $166,000 donation floors community By Jed Buelow Tomahawk Leader Reporter Harley-Davidson s $166,000 donation to replace the gym floor in the Tomahawk Elementary School fieldhouse will go a lot farther than just preventing twisted ankles and knees. The new wood-based floor, which replaced a rubber-based floor, also will improve students performance in the classroom, says Al Prosser, Tomahawk School district administrator. The old floor was causing injuries and the new one will eliminate many of those, he said. We ll see a positive spinoff in the classrooms because of this. It s really one fantastic gift. The new floor replaces the rubber flooring installed in The former floor was five years past its expiration, and in some areas, the concrete below the 1/8-inch of rubber was exposed. Not only does it provide additional padding, it also allows athletes feet to slide which should reduce the number of twisted ankles previously experienced. Students and adults are excited about it, Prosser said. Tomahawk has a tradition of solid support from its donors. This is another example of that wonderful relationship. Harley-Davidson Plan Contributions Committee members, along with local Hatchet Booster Club members, helped secure funding for the project. Harley-Davidson Foundation of Milwaukee awarded the $166,000 grant after committee members made a presentation at corporate headquarters. We were speechless when we heard the news. We re really blessed to have Harley-Davidson here, said Dave Duncan, Hatchet Booster president. I refer to it as the gorgeous jewel of the northwest. Duncan said the new floor benefits more than just the students, elementary through hig school, who practice and play on its surface. He noted the gym is open to the public, and each year over 1,500 student athletes use the fieldhouse. It s amazing to have a company this big in a small community. We re like family, Duncan said. I can t say enough how big of dividends this will provide down the road. This will make a world of difference for generations of children. It s just awesome. An open house will take place on Friday, Sept. 15 at 5:15 p.m., for viewing of the new fieldhouse gym floor. Following, the Thunder Parade will begin at the Tomahawk Elementary School parking lot on Kings Road at 6 p.m.
