2 A Message from the Director Thank you for your interest in the NYU Silver School of Social Work doctoral program. Our program offers students the preparation necessary for a successful career at a research-intense academic institution and for leadership roles in the design and development of social welfare programs and policies. The program s curriculum is designed to provide students with rigorous methodological, conceptual, and statistical training in both quantitative and qualitative research. Our aim is to prepare and competitively position our graduates for academic and research opportunities, such as faculty positions at top research universities and successful careers as independent investigators and social work leaders. Our faculty is especially renowned for expertise in several key areas, including poverty studies, mental health services research, and children and family research. Silver faculty have a strong portfolio of NIH and other research projects that are supported through extramural grant funding and provide doctoral students with cutting-edge training opportunities. In addition to NYU s standing as a global university with an increasingly international perspective, our students are significantly enriched by the resources of the University and from being part of New York City, with its incomparable dynamism, diversity, and rich research environment. Vincent Guilamo-Ramos, PhD, MPH, LCSW Professor and Director, PhD Program Co-director, Center for Latino Adolescent and Family Health

3 Dr. Jerome Wakefield is a scholar in conceptual foundations of clinical theory and an author of over 200 publications that address issues at the intersection of philosophy and the mental health professions. His recent work focuses on the concept of mental disorder, limitations of current DSM diagnostic criteria, and how to use revised diagnostic criteria to more accurately estimate the prevalence of depressive disorders and unmet need for services. In addition to his conceptual and theoretical scholarship, Dr. Wakefield tests the empirical implications of his work through secondary analysis of large epidemiological data sets and vignette studies of clinical judgment. Dr. Michelle Munson s research focuses on behavioral health, mental health services, and interventions among vulnerable youth and young adults. Her research utilizes multiple methodologies to examine the determinants of utilization and engagement in mental health and social services, and more broadly behavioral health and well-being outcomes. She is engaged in collaborative research in a variety of settings in New York, Greater Cleveland, and Detroit. Program Overview The core curriculum for the doctoral program consists of 12 required courses, four electives, and a mentored research practicum. Although most of the courses are taken within the Silver School of Social Work, two of the electives must be taken outside of the School. Full-time students enroll in four courses in the fall and spring semesters for two years, while part-time students enroll in two courses each fall and spring for four years. The research practicum occurs throughout the coursework phase. Following the completion of the core curriculum, students must pass a written comprehensive examination to enter candidacy. Candidates for the PhD degree must maintain continuous enrollment, successfully defend a dissertation proposal within three years of passing the comprehensive exam, and complete the dissertation no later than seven years after enrolling in the program (nine years for part-time students). Core courses include: _ Philosophy of Science & Knowledge Development (PHDSW-GS.3050) _ Methods of Inquiry (PHDSW-GS.3049) _ History of Social Work & Social Welfare (PHDSW-GS.3048) _ Introductory Statistics (PHDSW-GS.3028) _ Quantitative Methods (PHDSW-GS.3027) _ Social Science Theories & Social Work (PHDSW-GS.3053) _ Theories of Clinical Practice (PHDSW- GS.3057) _ Qualitative Methods (PHDSW-GS.3032) _ Social & Behavioral Intervention Research (PHDSW-GS.3064) _ Social Policy Analysis (PHDSW-GS.3059) _ Teaching & Learning in Social Work (PHDSW-GS.3033) _ Dissertation Proseminar (PHDSW-GS.3013) _ Research Practicum (non-credit) For an overview of the PhD program coursework, please visit: To view a timeline for the PhD program (cousework and candidacy), visit: 2 new york university Silver school of social work

8 Frequently Asked Questions How important are GRE scores? Is there a minimum score? Although we do not require applicants to obtain scores within a specific range, we do compare your scores to those of other applicants. Higher GPAs, stronger recommendations, and more extensive research and practice experience might compensate for lower test scores. Can I keep my full-time job while in the doctoral program? We strongly discourage full-time students from maintaining full-time employment. Coursework and the facultymentored research practicum will constitute a full-time commitment. Part-time students generally maintain employment. When and where are doctoral classes held? All courses are given at the NYU Washington Square campus, and are usually held in the afternoon and evening on Wednesdays and Thursdays. Full-time students generally attend classes two days a week, while part-time students attend classes one day a week. Dr. Jeane Anastas publishes widely in the areas of women s issues, GLBT rights, mental health, social work education, and research ethics. She currently serves as the president of the National Association of Social Workers (NASW) and has previously served on numerous national committees to advance social work education and research. Her current research involves promoting secure attachment relationships between teen mothers in the foster care system and their infants. Doctoral Student Association The Doctoral Student Association (DSA) is an advocacy group for PhD students at the NYU Silver School of Social Work. The association is concerned with the overall well-being of SSSW doctoral students and their participation in the social, academic, and professional life of the School.
