The British Community in Milan continues to thrive and to involve itself in all sorts of activities. The British Chamber of Commerce continues to grow and to stage seminars, lunches and social events which appeal to the business community and beyond. David Crackett, the President, who has done such a great job increasing the Chamber s membership over the past four years is stepping down this June to be replaced by John Law of HSBC, whom we wish every success. The Anglican community based on All Saints Church has been strengthened by a number of new additions, but has lost Father Nigel Gibson, who, after six years in the parish, has gone on to Hong Kong. He will be sadly missed. At the Consulate General, we have as usual had a busy time. This year s UK Italy Business Awards ceremony at the headquarters of Borsa Italia was the most glamorous and successful yet, and it was made even more special by the presence of a group of young dancers from the La Scala Academy who performed special pieces based on climate change themes. Prince Andrew, the Duke of York, paid us his second visit in two years, this time coinciding with Milan s Design Week and meeting some of the top UK designers, such as Tom Dixon and Alasdhair Wills who were exhibiting. And immediately after that, we had the Icelandic ash cloud and the closure of much of Europe s airspace which saw many of the Consulate General staff spending their days at the central station helping stranded British travellers on to buses. But, of course, the big news in the UK has been the general election and the change of government. For the first time since the Second World War, we have a coalition government. That may not sound sensational to people in Italy who are used to the idea, but it is a big change for the British. By this time next year, the new government will have had twelve months to put its new policies into effect. We can expect to see a lot of changes. But at least we know one thing that will not change - next June, as this June, we will be preparing for the Queen s official birthday and the Queen s Birthday Party.
