11 A Need for Communications Change NFPA 72 represents a major change in Fire Safety Code and the relationship between Fire Safety and School Paging systems. Voice Evacuation instructions have higher priority than the fire alarm Three major changes are included: o o o Interoperability between Fire Safety and Paging Systems Voice Intelligibility Ability to define Audio Signal Priorities

19 Design Considerations Common Areas Common areas are treated as a single zone. No need to partition additional logical l zones within a common area. Nearly all common areas require a larger number of speakers for adequate sound field coverage. Most efficient coverage via 70v or 25v amplifier and speakers A networked media converter (e.g., CM-800) line out drives the standard amplifier Key design question is individual speaker addressability important within the common area? IP speaker (e.g. 652-PL800S) for office spaces. Built-in microphone for bi-directional intercom Indoor hallways, gymnasium, cafeteria, etc. Outdoor playgrounds, parking lots, etc.

21 Design Considerations Power Loss Server Room expectation of standard, mission critical server back-up School Office If PC-based interface console is in use (e.g., instead of telephone only), small UPS backup required Common Areas single networked device (e.g., CM-800) per zone / 70v amplifier. Small UPS backup required per zone. Classroom A CM-3000 can be automatically powered through POE if main power is lost to the classroom. NFPA recommends 15 minutes of full power back-up and 24 hours of stand-by.
