The course provides an overview of concepts in the field of management information systems and information technologies within an integrated framework of management, organisation and technology elements for describing and analysing information. The following topics are covered: Information systems and business ICT and Strategy ICT infrastructure and emerging technologies ICT applications Development and implementation of IS Decision-making and ICT ICT and management 2/5
3 2 Course Goals and Learning Objectives The programme trains students within the BBA - IBMS stream towards HBO level proficiency so that they are able to qualify for starter positions within the MIS field in international organisations / settings. The purpose of the course is to understand the interaction between ICT, people and organisations and thus make a contribution to teaching the effective application and use of ICT. The course has the following learning objectives: 1. The student can indicate the importance of information systems and information technology in organisations. 2. The student knows how information and information technology can be used in organisations. 3. The student can map the business, information and application architecture of an organisation using the Architect software tools. 4. Provide insight into different methods for information systems development and the role the (information) managers can play. 5. Provide insight into the aspects that play a role in the implementation of information systems. 6. Provide insight into the aspects that play a role in the management of information systems. 3 Place in the Curriculum and Related Courses This course is part of the core field of 'Management Information Systems' and is a second year level course offered in the second or third year of the IBMS programme. It has a relationship with the courses "Logistics and Information Management (first year), Business Process Management (second year) and Global Supply Chain Management (fourth year). 4 Study Burden Total study burden per student is 140 hours (5 EC): Lectures/Tutorials (7 weeks x 2 hours): Homework (7 weeks x 3.5 hours): Reading of literature Lab sessions (7 weeks x 2 hours) Preparation for lab sessions (7 weeks x 1 hour) Exam preparation Exam Assignment completion 14.0 hours 24.5 hours 38.5 hours 14.0 hours 7.0 hours 25.0 hours 2.0 hours 15.0 hours 3/5
4 5 Pre-requisites The student has knowledge of the course 'Logistics and Information Management. The student has been admitted to the appropriate year of the study programme. Experience using software is a plus. 6 Exemption Possibilities Exemptions may be granted if grades for a similar course in another study programme of the FEM have been awarded. Submit requests to this effect to the Examination Board. See also the study section "Exemptions" in the study guide. 7 Competencies Generic competencies: - Advisory skills - Collaboration / networking - ICT knowledge Professional competencies: - Display of the organisational strategy (e.g. The Business Model Canvas) - A view of a business and information architecture - Advising over organisational strategy and business / information architecture - An understanding of development and implementation of IS and associated costs and benefits 8 Didactic Forms The various topics and theory will be explained and discussed during the tutorials by the teacher and/or via student led presentations. Case studies will also be examined within these sessions. In the MIS lab sessions, exercises/assignments take place using the architecture software. Both practice and final assignments will be carried out in groups. The teacher will provide an overview of key issues, explain concepts and methods, and provide instructions for execution during the lectures and lab sessions. Students are expected to prepare for the lectures and lab sessions by reading the literature, and learn various skills while performing tasks during the lab sessions (which are compulsory). 4/5
5 9 Assessment Type of Assessment Weighting Min. Grade Exam 60% 5.5 Assignment 40% 5.5 Plagiarism The Concise Oxford Dictionary defines this as taking, using or passing off the thoughts, writings, inventions, etc. of another person as one s own. This is a very serious offence. It includes: 1. Handing in the same (or very similar) assignments as other past or present (teams of) students; 2. Copying text or ideas from books, the Internet, etc. without proper source citation; 3. Copying answers from other students during examinations; and 4. Allowing other students to copy your assignments or examination answers. Please ensure you use footnotes and a bibliography correctly to cite sources so that the lecturer can check which sources you used and how you used them. Please do not just copy large amounts of information from sources, even when you have used inverted commas e.g. text. Cases of fraud are treated very seriously. Lecturers and examination invigilators refer all cases to the Exam Board.
