1 Health leaders coaches' corner: Coach biographies Tuesday, June 3 11:00 AM 12:00 PM Dr. Brendan Carr, CHE Island Health (formerly Vancouver Island Health Authority) Dr. Brendan Carr was named for Island Health in August Dr. Carr joined Island Health in March 2012 as the Executive Vice President and Chief Medical Officer. Prior to joining the health authority, he served as Vice President of Medicine with the Capital District Health Authority in Halifax and as an Assistant Professor with Dalhousie University. Dr. Carr holds a Doctor of Medicine and Master of Business Administration. He is a Certified Physician Executive, a Certified Healthcare Executive and has completed a research fellowship with the Canadian Health Services Research Foundation. He is a skilled Emergency Department physician and continues to take an occasional shift in Emergency. Active in education and health services research, Dr. Carr is an advocate for transformation in healthcare. Maureen Cava, FCCHL Manager, Professional Development and Education Toronto Public Health Maureen Cava is currently the Manager, Professional Development and Education for Toronto Public Health. She holds an undergraduate and graduate degree in nursing and has worked in the public health field for over 20 years. She was in the 2006 graduating class of the EXTRA Fellowship program sponsored through the Canadian Health Research Foundation. Her leadership in the development of a professional practice model for public health practice was ground breaking for public health practice. This saw the establishment of professional practice leaders in Toronto Public Health. Her research includes areas of communicable diseases (SARS), seniors quality of life and succession planning for health care practitioners. She has been instrumental in receiving large grants to conduct work on leadership/mentorship, competency development, succession planning and performance management. She has several peer reviewed publications to her credit. She has also presented her work at national and international conferences. She was responsible for the development and coordination of the Research Review Process at Toronto Public Health and also served on the Research Ethics Board at Ryerson University. Maureen has a wide collaborative network in the education, research and practice arenas. She also sits as Member-at-Large Socio Political Affairs for the Registered Nurses Association of Ontario. 1

2 Dr. Chris Eagle Past Alberta Health Services Dr. Chris Eagle is a retired Professor at the University of Calgary (maintaining an adjunct appointment in the Department of Community Health Sciences), and holds adjunct appointments at the Universities of Alberta and Victoria. He is an acknowledged leader in the field of health care administration. Dr. Eagle twice graduated from the University of Calgary (BScHons 1973, MD 1977) and holds an MBA from the University of Western Ontario. He specialized in cardiac anesthesiology. In 1991, he was appointed Professor and Head of the Department of Anesthesia at the University of Calgary. He has published more than 70 articles and has made many addresses to various professional societies, many in the area of healthcare quality and safety. He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, Diplomate of the American Board of Anesthesiologists, and Fellow of the Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthesia. Dr. Eagle has had a long career in health care administration. Most recently, he was President and Chief Executive Officer of Alberta Health Services, an organization with a C$13Bn operating budget and 100,000 employees. He has served as President and Chief Operating Officer of the Calgary Health Region, Executive VP and Chief Clinical Officer, VP and CIO of the Calgary Health Region, Associate Chief Medical Officer, Executive Director of the Foothills Hospital (Calgary), and Head of the Department of Anesthesia. He has also worked as Assistant Dean of Undergraduate Medical Education at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Calgary. He has is past-chair of the Specialty Committee of Anesthesia, former Chief Examiner in Anesthesia, and past-examiner in Anesthesia for the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons. Dr. Eagle has served as a board member on a number of health organizations. He was on the inaugural board for the Health Quality Council of Alberta and recently served on the board of the Canadian Institute of Health Information. Jim Hornell Brant Community Healthcare System, Ontario Prior to coming to the Brant Community Healthcare System based in Brantford & Paris, Ontario, Jim served as Chief Executive Officer of Cypress Regional Health Authority based out of Swift Current, Saskatchewan [home of medicare in Canada] where he had overall responsibility for the full continuum of care in the southwestern region of the province. He was an active participant in that province s Accelerating Excellence and Quality as a Business Strategy initiatives. Jim was also Chief Operating Officer & Vice President Corporate Development with the Central Health Authority in his native Newfoundland. He has Baccalaureate degrees from Memorial University in Newfoundland and a Masters degree from the University of Ottawa. Jim is also an accreditation surveyor with Accreditation Canada. As a volunteer, Jim has served at local, provincial, national and international levels within the sport of hockey. Presently, the Executive Vice Chair of Hockey Canada, he has toured internationally with several of Canada s national teams. 2

3 Jim has also created and delivered organization development, strategic planning and motivational sessions for a variety of diverse clients including established corporate players in the offshore oil & gas industry, finance, fisheries, and government agencies. Arden Krystal, CHE Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer Provincial Health Services Authority (PHSA) Arden Krystal holds executive leadership responsibility for all nine of PHSA s agencies such as the BC Cancer Agency, BC Women s and Children s Hospitals and the BC Centre for Disease Control, as well as the Chief Nursing Office, Population Health, the Surgical Patient Registry and the Redevelopment Project at BC Children s and Women s Hospitals. Ms. Krystal is an Adjunct Professor at the UBC School of Nursing and holds a Certified Health Executive designation from the Canadian College of Health Leaders, a Masters of Health Administration from the University of British Columbia, and has certification from the Harvard Business School Managing Health Care Delivery Program. Arden has a broad range of experience as a healthcare professional and has served in a variety of leadership roles during the course of her career. Her current portfolio has a total consolidated budget of approximately $1.5 billion in operating and over $600 million in capital (related to the redevelopment project). Prior to joining PHSA in April 2012, she held the position of Vice President, Clinical Operations at Fraser Health, and was the Clinical Executive Sponsor of the Surrey Hospital and Redevelopment project. Dwight Nelson, CHE Past President & Chief Executive Officer Regina Qu'Appelle Health Region Dwight is recently retired after 28 years of progressive health leadership roles. He was President & Chief Executive Officer of the Regina Qu'Appelle Health Region until the end of 2012 and previously served as Chief Executive Officer of the Headwaters Health Authority in Alberta. His health career also includes terms as a Vice President of the Alberta Children's Hospital and as an Assistant Executive Director at the Stony Plain Municipal Hospital. Dwight is the immediate past chairperson of the Western Canadian CEO Health Forum. He chaired the Council of CEO's in Alberta for two years and served on the boards of Accreditation Canada, the Association of Canadian Academic Health Organizations, and the Canadian College of Health Leaders for both Alberta and Saskatchewan. Strongly committed to his community, Dwight's local involvements have included the United Way of Regina Campaign Cabinet, the board of the Regina Symphony Orchestra and the board of the University of Regina. He is a Policy Fellow with the Johnson-Shoyama Graduate School of Public Policy. Dwight was awarded the 2012 National Mentorship Award from the Canadian College of Health Leaders. He is passionate about mentorship, coaching and the importance of developing future senior leaders. He is also the 2008 recipient of the ACHE Regent's Award for Senior Health Leadership in Canada. In 2006, Dwight was named Canada's top health care collaborator by Canadian Healthcare Manager Magazine. 3

4 Dwight is a graduate of the University of Calgary (Bachelor of Arts) and a Chartered Accountant. Michael Redenbach, CHE Vice President, Integrated Health Services Regina Qu Appelle Health Region (RQHR) Michael has spent 25 years in a variety of leadership capacities in the Saskatchewan healthcare system. After starting his career as a Manager in Home Care, Michael rode the waves of healthcare reform in Saskatchewan, serving in CEO or Vice-president capacities in both rural health districts and an urban, tertiary health region. While largely focused on community-based and primary health care services, Michael has also provided direct leadership in human resources, quality improvement, communications and long-term care. Michael is currently Vice President of Integrated Health Services for the RQHR, where he oversees mental health and addictions services, and Regina-based continuing care facilities. Over the past seven years with RQHR, Michael has served as Vice President Primary Health Care, and Chief Operating Officer. Michael has a Bachelor of Commerce degree from the University of Saskatchewan, a Masters in Healthcare Administration from the University of Minnesota, and is a Certified Health Executive with the Canadian College of Health Leaders (CCHL). He is currently the Saskatchewan Director on the Board of CCHL. Michael looks forward to the chance to meet with delegates at the NHLC, and fully expects to learn from each of his visitors at the Coaches Corner. Andrée Robichaud Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre Andrée Robichaud is the President and Chief Executive Officer of the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre since October 1, Prior to this appointment she was the President and Chief Executive Officer of the Region Health Authority A in New Brunswick. In November 2006, she was named as the first Associate Deputy Minister of Health for Francophones in Canada. She joined the Department of Health in 2001 as Executive Director of Planning and was then promoted to Assistant Deputy for Planning and Medicare Services. She has been a key participant nationally and provincially in the Santé en Français initiative to improve the health status of francophone s and to increase the number of francophone health care professionals. Andrée also chaired the Conference of Federal Provincial Deputy Ministers Advisory Committee on Health Delivery and Health Human Resources. She also played a major role in the establishment of a medical training program for francophone students in Moncton. Andrée was a Board member on the Atlantic Cancer Research Institute and is currently a member of the Thunder Bay Regional Research Institute Board of Directors. Andrée was elected to the OHA Board in November On September 17, 2013, Andrée was appointed to the Medical Council of Canada. Andrée is a graduate of the Université de Moncton, where she earned a Bachelor Degree and a Masters Degree in Public Administration. 4

5 Ken Tremblay, CHE Peterborough Regional Health Centre Ken Tremblay joined Peterborough Regional Health Centre as President & CEO in Prior to coming to Peterborough, he was the CEO of the Chatham-Kent Health Alliance (CKHA) where he served from Mr. Tremblay led CKHA to become one of Canada's Top 100 Employers and a best practice spotlight organization with the RNAO (Registered Nurses Association of Ontario). Prior to his assignment in Chatham, Ken headed an executive search practice for physicians and healthcare executives, and was also of: St Joseph s Hospital, Brantford; York Central Hospital (now Mackenzie Health), Richmond Hill; and, St. Boniface General Hospital, a teaching hospital in Winnipeg. Mr. Tremblay has an undergraduate degree in physiology and pharmacology from the University of Western Ontario and a Masters degree in Health Services Management from the University of Toronto. He is a Certified Health Executive and is a Fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives. Mr. Tremblay has made numerous contributions to health services management in Ontario and is active with editorial boards as peer reviewer and contributing editor. As a volunteer, Ken has been active with several community and municipal organizations the United Way and the Rotary Club. He enjoys a wide array of interests from canoeing and photography to woodworking and wine collecting and lives in Peterborough with his wife, Siobhan. Bill Zindle Executive Director, Business Development Roche Diagnostics Canada Bill has recently become the Executive Director of Business Development for Roche Diagnostics Canada in January of In this newly created role, he and his team are focused primarily on strategic healthcare initiatives within Canada. One of several key focuses of the role is to establish how Roche s Personalized Medicine strategy will enable healthcare systems to improve patient outcomes. Bill has over 17 years in the healthcare industry, with a majority of that time working for Ventana Medical Systems, now Roche Tissue Diagnostics out of Arizona. Bill held multiple commercial sales, marketing and leadership roles while at Ventana and it is that experience which has prepared him for this role in Business Development. Working hand in hand with Roche s Pharmaceutical Division, Bill understands the importance of delivering the right care to the right patient. With the rapid advancements in the area of companion diagnostics coupled with targeted therapies, Roche is on the forefront of how medicine is evolving to impact better outcomes. With the sole focus of Roche s Business Development to identify improved healthcare strategies in Canada, Bill and his team are looking to partner with Health Care Professionals to improve the lives of patients in Canada. 5
