Best Practice: Savoir Etre Education for Children and Parents There are many strategies that have resulted in a peaceful environment at the Living School. One of the key ones is a curriculum on savoirêtre (based on the Psychology of Evolution), which is taught as a distinct subject, with a special time devoted to it within the weekly schedule. Changemaker School The Living School France There is also a distinct conflict resolution strategies which are taught from as early as 3 years old including breathing, discharging, affirming personal CHANGEMAKERXCHANGE space. GLOBAL COLLABORATION PLATFORM FOR YOUNG SOCIAL ENTREPRENEURS Later on, pupils are taught to manage conflicts through finding common ground, recounting what they observe (rather than voicing their judgments) by saying what they feel, by expressing their need and by making a request. There is also a buddy system: children who help other children to resolve their conflicts. The living school have created a kit for other schools full of valuable resources, available here

Changemaker School Lusher Charter School USA Best Practice: Morning Meetings Changemaker School Lusher Charter's number-one school rule is be kind. Although it may seem simple, making kindness the foundation of a school culture is very challenging in practice. Through a robust social and emotional learning program and a planned effort to help students use empathy to improve their class, school, and local New Orleans community, Lusher challenges us to rethink what being kind means as an educational philosophy. To understand Lusher s approach, At Lusher they have a whole school morning meeting 4 days per week and class morning meetings on the other day but one day per week would be reserved for each class to have their own morning meetings. See this example of a peaceful approach and problem solved at a Lusher morning meeting and check out video highlights here Responsive classroom approach to morning meetings.

Best Practice: Using School Assemblies to promote a culture of peace Hyde-Addison Elementary School in Washington, D.C., whose motto is Making a World of Difference, highlighted how the combination of cultivating empathy and nurturing leadership opportunities in school through student-led school meetings can unleash positive ripple effects well beyond the classroom. Hyde-Addison is one of the most geographically diverse schools in the nation s capital. It strives to cultivate empathy and understanding across different cultures and between students. Changemaker School Hyde-Addison USA Wednesday all-school meetings are an example of the kind of creative leadership opportunities kids there have come to enjoy. They are usually student led and aimed at fostering this culture of peace. Some Tips and Tricks for Organizing Student- Led School Meetings

Best Practice: Children create anti bullying video(using imovie) At North Glendale School in St.Louis, Missouris, kids take bullying prevention into their own hands and had a competition to create the most CHANGEMAKERXCHANGE compelling anti-bullying video GLOBAL COLLABORATION PLATFORM FOR YOUNG SOCIAL ENTREPRENEURS Changemaker School North Glendale USA Check out the video and some more information about the school here

Best Practice: The Peaceful School Culture One of the main pillars on Namaste school s work is the peaceful school culture The peaceful school culture pillar aims to create a learning environment that promotes safety, respect, open dialogue, and nonviolent conflict resolution for students, teachers, staff, and parents. by implementing a modified year-round schedule to extend academic and wellness programming. Nam Every day, students engage in 60 minutes of CHANGEMAKERXCHANGE Physical Education and 20 minutes of recess, GLOBAL COLLABORATION PLATFORM FOR YOUNG SOCIAL ENTREPRENEURS plus begin the day with Morning Movement. Namaste supports both students and their families by providing meaningful family programming and a Parent Center. Changemaker School Namaste School USA This includes an innovative curriculum and peace tables which are used to resolve conflicts by the children themselves

Resources Peacemaking Curriculum & Peace first prize Rather than attempt a new anti-violence initiative, Eric Dawson of Peace First has set out to build safe and effective school climates, by equipping students as peacemakers, and providing educators with the critical skills and knowledge to integrate social-emotional learning into the school s curriculum and culture. What was needed was an approach that armed students as changemakers: one that enabled students to feel and act on empathy for one another CHANGEMAKERXCHANGE GLOBAL COLLABORATION PLATFORM FOR YOUNG SOCIAL ENTREPRENEURS Peace First has full and easily implementable curriculums available online which can be integrated into classes or an after school session Ashoka Fellow Eric Dawson USA There is also the Peace First prize which students can compete in Peace First Curriculum for Grades One and Two

Best Practice: The Power of Play Playworks vision is that one day every child in America will get to play - every day. We create a place for every kid on the playground, a place where every kid belongs, has fun and is part of the game. They offer an essential opportunity for children to explore their imaginations, to connect with other kids and to stretch and grow physically, emotionally and socially. Ashoka Fellow Jill Vialet USA In partnership with teachers, principals and parents, we build a culture of play that enables kids to feel a real sense of belonging and have the opportunity to contribute on the playground, in the classroom and into their communities. The are some great online Games (from very simple to very innovative) and resources from Playworks

Ashoka Fellow Yuhyun Park Korea Resources Digital & gamified peacemaking Empowering young children to be disciplined and courageous digital citizens is the centerpiece of Yuhyun s work. It is when the most vulnerable have the ability to discern and challenge negative digital behavior and see themselves as part of the solution that lasting change happens. Infollution Zero s flagship program is built on the premise that every child is born a hero with moral values, empathy, and discipline to use Information Technology in a responsible way. At the iz Hero site there are a number of interactive ways children learn the values of peacemaking.

Ashoka Fellow Kjartan Eide Norway Best Practice: Using Activity to Reduce Playground Conflicts The Activity Program is for primary and secondary schools amnd encourages games and activities during breaks with scientific proof in reducing bullying and aggression The idea: Trivselsprogrammet (TL), is an activity program for continuous active play in elementary and junior high schools. Through student elected Activity Leaders TL are instilling practice of personal leadership, active play, and teamwork, Kjartan enables children to create a school environment that is free from verbal and physical bullying. file:///users/apple/downloads/tl_information_leaflet_eng.pdf

Best Practice: Transforming Classrooms Through Escuela Nueva, Colombian Fellow Vicky Colbert has set out to transform classrooms into places of participatory and cooperative learning. Escuela Nueva's own line of textbooks are part workbook, part teacher guide, and part conversation facilitator, designed to develop students' abilities to dialogue. Students take on autonomy through a participatory governance structure that works both in the classroom and the school at large. Ashoka Fellow Vicky Colbert Columbia Parents may likewise receive training, and are invited in as active participants in the process. The model has been integrated into Colombia s national education standards and evaluations of teacher performance and any educator anywhere may take advantage of her materials. Materials available on request They also have some interesting methods for measuring their impact see here

Best Practice: Peace Paths SoulShoppe (created by Ashoka Changemakers Competition winner Vicki Abadesco) is an organistaion which supports school communities through a number of trainings and resources There are a number of interesting techniques including the Peacepath (see left photo) The Peacepath is painted on the playground and used during random and trivial conflicts instructions on how to use are found in this kit & other resources Changemakers Competition Winner SoulShoppe USA Other playground tips can be found here

Transformative Approach Peer mediation programs traditionally work within a problem-solving framework: Conflict is viewed as a problem that can and must be solved (Spangler, 2003). But what happens when there is no solution? Or, better yet, when the conflict isn t really a problem? Faced with these dilemmas, the problem-solving approach can become frustrating and demoralizing especially for young children. This article looks to the experience of the PAZ Peer Mediation Program to demonstrate how incorporating elements of transformative mediation can address some of the pitfalls of the problem-solving approach. See this article on the transformative versus traditional approaches to peer mediation : Transformative processes emphasise that not all conflicts can be resolved using the same processes. It is much more about the WHY rather than the HOW Whereas most mediation programs focus on forming a solution to the problem, the transformative approach seeks to normalize conflict by directing the students toward personal reflection and empathy. 14

Best Practice: Peacemaking at After School Clubs WINGS FOR KIDS mission is to teach socio emotional skills how to behave well, make good decisions and build healthy relationships - to elementary school age kids. They weave a comprehensive social and emotional learning curriculum into a fresh and fun after school program. Kids get the life lessons they need to succeed and be happy and they get a safe place to call home after school. The Ready, Set, Soar with SEL and DIY 2.0 Kits were specially designed for parents/guardians, educators, youth development leaders and others who want to incorporate social & emotional development activities, lessons and plans into kids' daily lives. All activities are based on proven methods from our program. Resources for After School Clasees here Anti Bullying kit HERE

Angels in Orange Project to train children as mediators in conflict situations Project is managed by a teacher and an external conflict and de-escalation trainer Election and Training of School Angels:Children who get trained as school angels are suggested by their peers and then elected democratically They are recognized and kindly regarded at their school They participate in conflict resolution trainings once a week for 1.5 hours each in their leisure time which increases the commitment and importance among the students (In German see Nick for more details in English)

A Tale of Two Wolves as used to introduce conflict resolution by Ashoka Fellow Eric Dawson A native American boy, distraught over injustice and feeling full of anger, turns to his Grandfather for advice. Filled with empathy for the young boy's struggle, the Grandfather admits how even he feels as if there are two wolves living inside of him. CHANGEMAKERXCHANGE GLOBAL COLLABORATION PLATFORM FOR YOUNG SOCIAL ENTREPRENEURS A Story To Finish! While one is peaceful and good, it is struggling for control against the other that is angry and violent. "Which wolf will win?" the little boy wants to know. His grandfather's answer is all too simple: "My son, whichever wolf I feed.
