Vioence greaty affects the ives and heath of women: the impact can ast for years even a ifetime. But there are paces to turn for hep, ways to protect yoursef, and hope for heaing and a better future. Women at risk Women and girs of a ages, races, cutures, reigions, education eves, and sexua orientations can experience vioence. Based on reported cases, U.S. women most at risk of vioence are: American Indians/Aaskan Natives African Americans Hispanics girs younger than 18 women and girs iving in poverty The impact of vioence Experiencing vioence can greaty impact how you fee about yoursef, reationships, and the word around you. It can affect your physica and menta heath. And it can change your behavior and daiy ife. No one has the right to hurt you or make you fee afraid. Around 1 miion women are staked each year, most often by someone they know, such as an ex-husband, exboyfriend, or peer. Impact on chidren Vioence against women can aso impact chidren. About 50 percent of men who assaut their wives aso physicay abuse their chidren. Aso, women who are abused are more ikey to abuse their chidren. And chidren can be injured during vioence between their parents. Studies show chidren who witness or experience vioence at home may have ong-term physica, emotiona, and socia probems. They are aso more ikey to experience or commit vioence in the future. Protect your chidren by getting hep for yoursef. This chapter focuses on three types of common vioence against women: intimate partner vioence sexua vioence staking Intimate partner vioence (IPV) IPV can be a one-time event or a pattern of physica, sexua, or psychoogica harm by a current or former partner or spouse. It happens in both heterosexua and same-sex coupes. And it can happen in nonsexua reationships. Teen dating vioence has many of the same risk factors, warning signs, and effects as IPV. Common forms of vioence Athough women often fear being attacked or hurt by a stranger, they are at greatest risk of vioence from peope they know: About 25 to 30 percent of women are physicay or sexuay abused by a romantic partner. Your partner may: Contro who you spend time with, where you go, and what you do Trace your phone cas Insut you and get angry about sma things Accuse you of cheating Make fun of you Contro how you spend your money or refuse to give you money Act jeaous when you spend time with friends Bame you for his or her vioence Use your chidren to manipuate you Foow you when you go out Try to make you afraid IPV is never okay, even if it ony happens once in a whie. It can be hard to admit you are in an abusive reationship or find a way out. But if your partner is hurting you, it is time to get hep. Many abused women stay with their partner out of fear or because they do not see a way out. Others stay because they ove their partner and beieve he or she wi change. But the onger the abuse goes on, the more damage it can cause. Whether you decide to eave your partner or stay, make a safety pan in case IPV happens again. Highest risks of IPV You cannot aways predict whether your partner wi become vioent. But studies show some traits increase the risk of someone becoming vioent with their partner. These traits incude: abusing drugs or acoho thinking vioence in a reationship is a right strict beiefs about traditiona gender roes having a ot of anger or hostiity a history of partner abuse depression career or ife stress, such as not having a job having been a victim of, or exposed to, vioence as a chid Panning Ahead If you are being abused, create a safety pan. Contact the Nationa Domestic Vioence Hotine for hep. A few ways to prepare are to: Pan a possibe escape routes from your home. Know your partner s red fags ; eave the house if you sense your partner wi become vioent. Avoid fights in rooms without access to a door or where weapons are kept. Find a safe pace to go if you are in danger famiy, friends, a sheter. Get a court protective order. Memorize emergency numbers. Have money avaiabe cash kept with a friend, a separate savings account, a credit card. Teach your chidren not to get in the midde of a fight between you and your partner. Have a ce phone or caing card handy; do not use your home phone or ce phone to ca for hep if your partner can trace the numbers. Create a signa to use with friends and famiy to aert them to danger. Have access to important items such as extra car keys, a driver s icense, socia security number, checkbook, address book or a ist of important numbers, heath insurance card, passport, immigration papers, copies of birth certificates for you and your chidren, schoo and medica records, and chidren s favorite toys. 8 Leaving an abusive partner takes courage, support, and panning. But it is possibe. For your safety and the safety of The Cyce of Vioence IPV can foow a three-stage cyce that repeats over and over. It is caed the Cyce of Vioence. Tension-buiding stage Honeymoon stage Vioent stage 1. Tension-buiding stage: Tension buids over time and may incude minor incidents such as pushing or threats. To deay movement to stage two the victim may act passive, stay out of the way, and avoid making the partner upset. 2. Vioent stage: Tension expodes, resuting in severe abuse. 3. Honeymoon stage: The abuser apoogizes, promises to stop the abuse, and often is very oving for a whie. The abuser may fee sorry about the abuse, promise to stop and get hep, and show regret and extra kindness. The victim then fees oved and beieves the vioence wi end. The cyce then repeats. In time, the honeymoon stage may get shorter, and the tension-buiding and vioent stages onger. your chidren, tak about your options with an IPV counseor before you eave. If the IPV is mid or has just started, get professiona hep before it gets worse. If you choose to stay with your partner, the abuse may get worse over time even if you get hep. So have a safety pan ready. You cannot change your partner by oving him or her more, by changing yoursef, or by hoping he or she wi change if you wait it out. Your partner needs to get hep, but even that may not stop the abuse. A reationship shoud not eave you feeing scared, depressed, hopeess, worthess, or in danger. You deserve to be safe and treated we. If the abuse continues, hep is just a phone ca away. Sexua vioence Sexua vioence is a competed or attempted sexua contact or behavior that happens without your cear, vountary consent. No one has the right to make you be sexua, incuding your partner. Sexua vioence can shatter a woman s ife in an instant. And it can take years to emotionay hea from the experience. Sexua vioence incudes: Improper and unwanted touching, kissing, fonding, and groping. Sexua assaut, such as rape or attempted rape (vagina, ora, or ana). This incudes sex when the victim is drunk, unconscious, or unabe to give wiing consent. It aso incudes unwanted sex with a partner, spouse, or date. 9 Eder Abuse Eder abuse is doing something, or faiing to do something, that causes harm or risks harm to a vunerabe oder adut. Neary 90 percent of the abusers are famiy members, most often adut chidren or spouses. Eder abuse aso happens in paces such as nursing homes and hospitas. Among the edery, women ages 80 and oder are at highest risk for being abused or negected. Eder abuse incudes: physica, sexua, or emotiona abuse financia abuse such as taking or misusing an edery person s money or property, or tricking her into spending or investing money ignoring or abandoning an edery person under your care If you think an edery person you know is being abused, pease te someone. Ca your oca adut protective services, ong-term care ombudsman, or the poice. If you are being abused, you can: Te someone you trust, such as a doctor or friend. Contact your state or oca adut protective services (APS). body parts, being shown pornography, and verba or written sexua harassment. Sexua vioence can happen anywhere on a date, at a party, at work, at home, or in pubic. The attacker may be a stranger or someone you know, such as a partner, famiy member, or peer. In fact, in 8 of 10 rape cases, the victims know their rapist. Survivors may fee shame or guit. But you are never at faut even if you didn t fight back or say no because of fear or shock. Ca 911 and report the crime. Ca a friend or famiy member you trust. Or ca a crisis center or a hotine, such as the Nationa Sexua Assaut Hotine to-free number isted in the resource section on page 249. Do not wash, comb, or cean any part of your body. Do not change cothes if possibe, so the hospita staff can coect evidence. Do not touch or change anything at the crime scene. Go to your nearest hospita emergency room right away. You need to be examined and treated for injuries. Ask if the hospita has a Sexua Assaut Nurse Examiner (SANE) who can perform your exam and provide emotiona support. She wi coect evidence using a rape kit to find fibers, hairs, saiva, semen, or cothing the attacker may have eft behind. 11 Most hospitas wi offer emergency contraception pis to hep prevent pregnancy. If it is not offered, you can request it. The hospita staff can ca the poice and contact a rape crisis center counseor. Ways to protect yoursef To reduce your risk of sexua vioence: Trust your feeings. If you fee in danger, you probaby are and need to get away. Notice what and who is around you. Know where you are going and stay in we-it areas. Park your car in we-it areas. After getting in your car, drive away. Do not sit in your car to ook at items you bought or make phone cas. If you are in danger, bow a whiste, or ye FIRE instead of hep or rape. Never eave a socia event with someone you just met or do not know we. Never wak or jog aone at night or in secuded areas. Meet new dates in pubic paces. Be carefu when meeting peope from Internet dating sites. Te a friend where you are going and who you are going out with. Never drink anything that has been out of your sight, or that you did not see being poured from a new botte. Date rape drugs are odoress and tasteess. Avoid parties where a ot of acoho may be served, such as fraternity events. Contro your drinking at events. Keep your car and home doors ocked. Lock home windows. Insta home security. Go out in groups and have friends watch out for each other. Offer hep to other women who may be in danger. Staking Staking is a pattern of repeated, unwanted attention, harassment, or contact that directy or indirecty communicates a threat or scares a person. 12 Cyberstaking Cyberstaking is use of the Internet, e-mai, or other forms of onine communications to stak another person. It can incude: harassment or threats in chat rooms e-mai, instant messages (IM), or text message threats and harassment improper messages on a message board or in a guest book tracing your computer and Internet use obscene or improper e-mai messages or photo attachments sending eectronic viruses someone pretending to be you in a chat room If you are cyberstaked: Log off right away and stay off-ine for at east 24 hours. Send the person a cear, written warning to stop harassing you and to never contact you again. If the harassment continues, do not respond to anything the person writes. It gives them a sense of power and can increase the staking. damage or stea your things harass you through the Internet, e-mai, or chat rooms use a hidden camera to watch you use computer software and hardware toos to track and harass you send gifts or ove etters ca a the time Staking is iega, yet 1 in 12 women wi be staked in their ifetimes. It is a crime that can be hard to prove, harder to stop, and difficut to get others to take seriousy. Yet 76 percent of women kied by their intimate partners were first staked by them. Most victims are staked for about 1.8 years. These women often fee hepess, anxious, and depressed. They often have nightmares; fee out of contro; have troube seeping, eating, and concentrating; and ive with constant fear. Staking can aso cause financia probems if fear or depression keeps a woman from going to work. Steps to take if you are being staked: Trust your instincts. If you are, or think you may be, in danger, find a safe pace to go, such as a poice station, fire station, or pubic area. Pan in advance what you wi do if you are in danger. If you cannot get out of danger, but can get to a phone, ca 911. Get a restraining order. 13 Change your onine identity and a of the information in your IM or chat profie. Change your e-mai address and Internet service provider (ISP). For e-mai staking, contact the person s ISP and fie a compaint. Keep a e-mais or og fies from the staker for evidence. If you think you are in physica danger, contact the poice or Federa Bureau of Investigation (FBI). Be safe onine: Never post onine profies or messages with detais that coud be used to identify or ocate you (such as age, sex, address, workpace, phone number, schoo, teams you pay on, or paces you hang out). Do not post photos on a site that can be accessed by the pubic, such as in a MySpace profie, onine dating profie, chat group, or bog. Do not te anyone your onine ID or passwords. Take threats seriousy. Fie a compaint with the poice. If they cannot hep, ca a vioence hotine for advice. Unti the stakers do something they can be arrested for, poice can ony tak to them. Coect evidence for poice. Record every incident. Incude the time, date, and other important information. Keep videotapes, audiotapes, answering machine/voicemai messages, e- mai messages, photos of the person outside your home or workpace, property damage, and any etters or e-mai. Cut off a contact with the staker. Carry a ce phone at a times. Secure your home with aarms and motion-sensitive ights. Keep your garage and car ocked. Check around you before getting in the car. Get a ocking gas cap. Know safe ocations you can drive to if being foowed, and stay in the car and bow your horn to get attention when you stop. Get hep. 14 One Woman s Story When I started a new job in a different state, it was hard for me to meet new peope and make friends. I became very oney, so I turned to the Internet for hep. I discovered that through onine dating sites, I coud easiy find men wiing to meet me and buy me drinks. I enjoyed the company and attention; each time I met a new person was exciting, and it made me fee attractive, sexy. I became addicted to that feeing. Whie at first I was cautious about meeting them in person, I ater became ess concerned about my own persona safety. I ignored the horror stories I heard about women disappearing or being murdered by someone they met on the Internet. A I wanted was that next time when I woud get dressed up, go out with someone new, and fee on top of the word. I was bessedy ucky at first. I met Joe onine (his name has been changed), and even though he ived 2 hours away, we arranged to meet at a hafway point. I missed a the warning signs from the start. He had me meet him at a gas station where we eft his car and took mine. We went to a cub, and I drank Don t et anything come before your persona safety. too much to drive home safey. He said he woud pay for a hote and promised he woud not try anything sexua. I trusted him. He did not keep his promise, no matter how many times I said STOP. I shoud have screamed at the top of my ungs. I shoud have kicked him. I shoud have eft and never ooked back. But a I kept thinking was, This ony happens to peope I hear about in the news, not me. Maybe this is my faut. Did I bring this upon mysef? I shoud have kicked and screamed and MADE him stop. But I didn t want to make a scene. I didn t want to drive home drunk. I didn t want to strand him there with his car hafway across town. I ay there and cried. He asked what was wrong and I tod him, You RAPED me. He denied it and made me fee ike an idiot. I never reported him. The next morning I cursed mysef a the way home for being so stupid. It took a ot of time and therapy to reaize that, athough it was stupid to put mysef in such a dangerous situation, what happened to me was not my faut. Even now it s hard to beieve that. The point of this story is not to scare anyone out of onine dating. Years ater I signed up for onine dating again my sense of persona safety and sef-esteem intact and I met the man of my dreams. The important thing to remember is this: don t et anything come before your persona safety. And don t be afraid to scream ike crazy and cause a scene. You are worth it.
