2 An Inside Look The Shaw High School Criminal Justice Program is a two-year Career & Technical Program. Established by Commander James Copeland in 1997 and assisted by Andre Haynesworth, the Criminal Justice Program strives for excellence through academic merit, leadership, and perseverance. 3 Requirements Prospective Criminal Justice students must have a minimum of a 2.0 Accumulative G.P.A. by the end of their sophomore year. Students must also complete Algebra 2 by the end of their 12 th grade year. After being accepted into this vocational course, students must maintain professional and respectable demeanors, as they are a representation of their class, school, and families as well. 5 Professionalism This class is for students who want to pursue careers in the Criminal Justice profession. The class meets for a total of two blocks per day. Students receive up to four brand-new uniforms, which they are required to wear for class and/or field trips. Upon graduation from high school, criminal justice students are only required to pay back $75.00 of the cost of their uniforms, which is paid through senior dues. Lt. Erica Walker, Sgt. 6 Student Leadership NHS Athletic Academic College Military While many of the students in the SHS Criminal Justice Class are contemplating future careers, they exemplify leadership through academics and community involvement. 30% of the students in Criminal Justice rank in the top 20% of their graduating class, while 60% participate in sports and other extracurricular activities. Graduates of the Criminal Justice class attend either higher-level education or enlist in the U.S. Military.
7 The College Connection Students of the Criminal Justice Program also receive seven (7) college credits after graduation. These credits can be used at colleges to further education in the field of law. Many of the graduates of this program attend college at schools such as: University of Toledo Central State University Eastern Michigan University Cuyahoga Community College Lakeland Community College West Virginia State University University of Akron Alabama State University Criminal Justice students on a college visit to Central State University
8 Job/Certification Opportunities Criminal Justice students receive various certifications between their junior and senior year. These certifications include: Private Security First Responder HAZMAT CPR/First Aid Homeland Security 911 Telecommunications Occupational Safety (OSHA) As the program continues to grow, many certification courses are added annually. Students of the Criminal Justice Program also receive jobs in workstudy positions including security at local hospitals and public venues and the East Cleveland Police Department.
