NETWORKING COMPLEXITY & OPEX IS OUT OF CONTROL The automaqon and virtualizaqon revoluqon has proven elusive Compute OS Instances/FTE* Network Devices/FTE**? *Source: Gartner Group IT Key Metrics Data 2009: Key Infrastructure Measures: Wintel Server Analysis: MulQ Year, IT Key Metrics Data 2013: key Infrastructure Measures: Windows Server Analysis: MulQ Year and team esqmates based on interviews

WHAT IS SDN? because the enormous installed base of equipment and protocols, [ ], which have created an exceedingly high barrier to entry for new ideas. [ ] hence the commonly held belief that the network infrastructure has ossified. OpenFlow White Paper, 2008 Stanford computer sciencst [ ] developed a standard called OpenFlow [ ]- - a sort of "so#ware- defined networking." MIT Technology Review, 2009

What is Sokware Defined Networking?!?

ORIGINAL DEFINITION Wikipedia DefiniQon: A communications protocol that gives access to the forwarding plane of a network of a switch or router over the network.

DEFINITION OF SDN Two addiqonal trends: 1. Bare Metal Switches 2. Hypervisor Switches 2013 BIG SWITCH NETWORKS, INC. 15

AGENDA Agenda: Why SDN? Origins of SDN Hypervisor Switches Bare Metal Switches Where is SDN today? 2013 BIG SWITCH NETWORKS, INC. 16

BARE METAL SWITCHES Purchase Sokware and Hardware independently Features Features Network OS Network OS System Silicon TradiIonal Model System and Sokware from one company VerQcally integrated and closed System Merchant Silicon SW and HW Separate Pick best- of- breed Sokware can be Open Source or Closed 2013 BIG SWITCH NETWORKS, INC. 17

SWITCH LIGHT Linux OpenFlow SwitchLight Switch operaing system Linux distribuqon with OpenFlow agent Open Source, available on ProjectFloodlight.org Supports a number of physical switches

AGENDA Agenda: Why SDN? Origins of SDN Hypervisor Switches Bare Metal Switches Where is SDN today? 2013 BIG SWITCH NETWORKS, INC. 24

SDN: OVERLAYS VS DIRECT SWITCHED Different Approaches Hypervisor Overlay Switched in Hardware vswitch Tunnel Overlays Hypervisor switch provides networking funcqons Packets are tunneled over the physical network Physical network is dumb Two separate networks Direct Switched Physical and Hypervisor Switches forward packets directly Central control for physical and virtual Single Integrated Network

OVERLAYS IniIally, we had no choice but to do Overlays Early SDN Switches lacked features to do everything in hardware Couldn t replace legacy physical networks Today, they are opional Cheap and Powerful SDN ImplementaQons give us sufficient flexibility to do all forwarding in hardware The Future: The So_ware Controlled Data Center All hardware will be controlled by one control framework Switches and servers working together as one system 2013 BIG SWITCH NETWORKS, INC. 26

AGENDA Agenda: Why SDN? Origins of SDN Hypervisor Switches Bare Metal Switches Where is SDN today? 2013 BIG SWITCH NETWORKS, INC. 27

SDN TODAY Early Adopters Nuts & Bolts Requires a dev team The 1% of customers Mainstream Packaged product Turn- key, easy and cheap The other 99% Mobile Carrier Large Bank Footwear Retailer SDN 1.0 SDN 2.0 OpenFlow only Hybrid OpenFlow Switches Write your own ApplicaQon Dual network: Overlay vs. Fabric OpenFlow + Open Source Bare Metal Switches with Linux Turn- Key SoluQons & Use Cases SDN Fabrics

SDN DEPLOYMENTS Our perspecqve In 2013 we have seen large scale SDN adopion 1000 s of physical ports > $1m MulQple Data Centers What are the key applicaions? Customers are starqng with the least mission criqcal applicaqons Network Monitoring Dev/Test Compute Farms AdopIon is happening in Service Providers, Enterprise, Web BIG SWITCH NETWORKS, INC. 29

SUMMARY The SDN revoluion is happening SDN is about giving end users control over the so_ware that runs their network Customers are deploying large scale SDN systems today Join the Open SDN RevoluIon! 2013 BIG SWITCH NETWORKS, INC. 30
