2 March of Dimes NICU Family Support was created 10 years ago to: Provide information and comfort to families during the NICU hospitalization of their newborn, during the transition home, and in the event of a newborn death Contribute to NICU staff professional development Promote the philosophy of family-centered care throughout NICUs Multiple services are available in hospitals through NICU Family Support, including the: Chapter-managed, March of Dimes-staffed NICU Family Support Program, NICU Family Support License Program, NICU Family Support Center (Kiosk) and ShareYourStory.org. NICU Family Support is in more than 112 hospitals across the country and is offered in every state, Washington, D.C. and Puerto Rico. NICU FAMILY SUPPORT WAS LAUNCHED AT ATLANTA MEDICAL CENTER IN 2007 AND CONTINUES TO EHNANCE FAMILY-CENTERED CARE AND SUPPORT FOR FAMILIES EACH YEAR. THE FOLLOWING IS A COMPREHENSICE OVERVIEW OF OUR PROGRAM IN NICU Family Support Activities 2011: Total Number of NICU Admissions: 433 Parent Care Kits distributed to families: 371 Parent Activities/Parent Education Hours offered: 44 Family members who attended Parent Activity/ Education Hours: 140 Number of NFS Volunteers participating: 34 2
3 Parent Hours Offered for Family Education, Support and Comfort Craft Opportunities throughout the year, including: o Crib Nametags for Baby o Valentines Crafts o Easter Crafts o Mother s Day Crafts o Thanksgiving Crafts Sibling Sunday Activities NICU Family/Baby Photography Sessions RSV Education, Rana Ritgers-Simonds, RD Infant Massage, May DeWees, RN Risk Reduction; Ten Important Things to Remember, Heidi Squires, NICU Family Support Specialist NICU Family Support Modules Modules are comprehensive programs focused on a specific topic area. They include: parent education, parents comfort and staff education. Modules are selected by the CNAC (Chapter NICU Advisory Committee). Our modules include: Comprehensive Photography The use of photography as a tool for family empowerment and encouragement, and to assist NICU families in documenting their journey from beginning to end. Transition to Home To address the emotional and educational needs of NICU families as they transition home from the NICU. 3
4 Family Empowerment To empower families in the NICU to participate in their baby s care, to be an advocate for their newborn, and to act as a member of the healthcare team. NICU Family Support 2011 Highlights Conducted NICU Family Reunion for 75 + graduates and their families and 25+ hospital staff and volunteers (staff and NICU graduate pictured above) Provided one NICU nurse, who is active on CNAC and in other ways with NICU Family Support, the opportunity to attend the Gravens Conference with other NICU Family Support Specialists and other NICU staff from around the country Provided breakfast for additional hospital-driven CEU s for NICU staff Local news station visited Atlanta Medical Center to provide program coverage on NICU Family Support Weeklong recognition of NICU staff during National Neonatal Nurses Week 4
5 Bake sales (organized by NICU staff) to support the NICU Family Support Program, including a special bake sale during World Prematurity Month, highlighting NICU equipment with an isolette display and awareness signs Partnered with a local brain injury group to provide an art activity for their group, which resulted in the creation of scrapbook signs for the NICU Provided over 185+ individuals with education and materials on NICU Family Support at the Campaign for the Atlanta Birth Center event Ensured that all families and NICU staff received hand-delivered treats on Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day. Professionally framed and hung photos for breastfeeding room Provided NICU tours, program education, and mission moments to potential donors and Chapter staff throughout the year 2012 Goals for NICU Family Support Promote participation and attendance in all Parent Hours Provide monthly Parent Education Hours on a topic not previously offered by the program Engage and support the participation of additional hospital leadership and graduate parents on the Chapter NICU Advisory Committee (CNAC) Encourage continued involvement of other community volunteer organizations to support the program through donations of time and supplies Provide support to more parents around Kangaroo Care and therapeutic physical touch with their babies 5
