Life Sciences in Science and Business
Life sciences research for life. This means exploiting advances in biotechnology responsibly in the interest of people, animals and nature at large : Competence in Life Sciences is the capital of North Rhine-Westphalia and center of the BioRiver biotech cluster in the Rhineland. More than 50 life science companies as well as numerous suppliers and service providers operate in the region. s Heinrich Heine University is the hothouse of Germany s biotech industry. Several big players in the chemicals and pharmaceuticals industry, including Bayer, Henkel, Schwarz Pharma, Degussa and 3M, have their headquarters in the region. Established Companies and Start-ups Germany s most successful biotech companies, such as Qiagen, Rhein Biotech, Evotec or NewLab BioQuality, originate in. More than 50 life science companies have settled here, many of which are Japanese, American or British enterprises. is centrally located in Germany and in the heart of Europe.
: Excellence in Life Sciences Research s Heinrich Heine University is renowned for its strong research capacity. Other important research institutions in include the German Diabetes Research Institute, the Institute for Environmental Medical Research and the Biological-Medical Research Center. Life Science Centers The Life Science Center is located next to the university campus and offers space for start-ups and established companies. A second technology center is dedicated to health research and product development. Patent Law When it comes to patent cases, has Europe s most important and, after Washington D.C., the world s second most important patent court. Not surprisingly, therefore, the city is home to a multitude of judges and attorneys specialized in patent law. In addition, the Center for Intellectual Property Law, a competence center for bio patent law, serves as a contact for companies and patent attorneys. The Federal State of North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW): Where Life Science Meets Business Around 20% of the German health market with its hospitals, doctors and pharmacies is concentrated in NRW. 57 institutions of higher education, 27 research institutes, 11 Max Planck Institutes, 14 Fraunhofer Institutes and the Jülich Research Center, one of the largest of its kind in Europe, as well as seven university clinics and other major clinics are all to be found in NRW, 10 Leibniz Institutes are based in NRW. With 18 million inhabitants, NRW is both Germany s most populous federal state (one-fifth of all Germans live here) and Europe s most densely populated region. With a gross domestic product of 481 billion (2004), NRW scores higher in international ranking than major European economies such as the Netherlands, Belgium or Sweden. It is home to 700,000 small and medium-sized companies. 10,000 of the 47,000 German start-ups come from NRW. 39 of Germany s top 100 companies in terms of revenues are based in NRW.
Trade Associations and Organizations Many important trade associations and other professional organizations of the life sciences and chemicals sectors have their offices in. The city is home to several regional associations of the chemical industry. The organization BioRiver Life Sciences in the Rhineland, which represents the interests of 74 institutions from science and industry from the entire Rhineland, is based in. is the seat of LSA Life Science Agency GmbH, an initiative by the state government of NRW promoting the life sciences. The Committee of the Employer Associations of the Chemicals Industry of North Rhine-Westphalia (LA) with around 350 companies. The Employer Association of Rhineland Chemical Industry with 200 member companies and around 80,000 employees. Life Sciences Network The communications platform known as LifeScienceNet is promoted jointly by the city s Office for Economic Development, the Chamber of Commerce and Industry, and the Life Science Center. The network provides pragmatic and practical support for science and industry at regional level. It not only holds extremely popular Today more than 50 life science companies operate in the region. Other Associations in The German Chemical Industry Association (VCI NRW) with 465 member companies and around 130,000 employees. The German Pharmaceutical Industry Association (BPI) with 60 member companies and around 14,000 employees. meetings, but also arranges joint stands at key trade fairs for biotechnology. www. lifescience-dus.de

s Advantage: Highly Qualified Human Resources One of the most compelling reasons for settling here is the number of welltrained personnel available. When it comes to placing students into employment, ranks second nationwide. Each year, several thousand students take their final exams in life science-related subjects in NRW ,000 laboratory personnel and several hundred biological-technical, pharmaceutical-technical and chemical-technical assistants are trained in the region each year. Every year, several thousand students take their exams in life science-related subjects at 12 universities and six universities of applied sciences in NRW. Five cities in the BioRiver region currently train nearly 1,000 BTAs, CTAs and PTAs, and vocational colleges train several hundred biological-technical and chemicaltechnical assistants annually. Universities and Universities of Applied Sciences The universities and universities of applied sciences in the BioRiver region provide education in biology, bioinformatics, biotechnology, biochemistry, chemistry, medicine, molecular biology, pharmacy, bioengineering, nanotechnology and other sciences. Each year, examinations are held in the BioRiver region for: More than 640 biologists and bioengineers More than 260 chemists and chemical engineers Around 1,500 physicians Some 150 pharmacists Some 15 biochemists/biomedical engineers Professional Training in the Dual System Germany s dual system of acquiring professional training both in school and on the job is held up as an example worldwide. Each year, examinations are held by the Chambers of Commerce and Industry in Aachen, Bonn,, and Neuss for (2004): 40 biology laboratory assistants 270 chemical laboratory assistants 85 junior chemical workers 510 chemistry technicians 15 pharmacy technicians Vocational College Programs In the BioRiver region, training as biological-technical assistant (BTA), chemical-technical assistant (CTA) or pharmaceutical-technical assistant (PTA) is offered in, Hilden, and Aachen. In 2004, the colleges were attended by: 350 BTAs 337 CTAs 91 PTAs

BioRiver Region Enabling technologies are an important field of activities in this region, which is home to some of the segment s world market leaders, such as Qiagen, Miltenyi and Amaxa. The technologies include tissue engineering and stem cell therapy as well as bioinformatics and gene expression profiling. Oligonucleotid synthesis, analysis, process development and the production of pharmaceutical materials in accordance with WHO-GMP are only some of the services offered. The Aachen/Jülich region completes the range with expertise in bioprocess engineering. Enabling technologies are an important field of activity in this region which is home to some of the world market leaders in their respective segment, notably Qiagen, Miltenyi and Amaxa. locations for pharmaceuticals and chemicals. BioRiver Parks All of the region s 19 technology centers have been integrated into the BioRiver Parks concept. With a total area of 200,000 m 2 and 70,000 m 2 office space they provide the perfect working environment for both start-ups and established companies. Drug-developing companies such as Biofrontera, Coley Pharmaceuticals and Paion which was listed on the stock exchange at the beginning of 2005 all have extremely advanced product pipelines. Other companies, Rhein Biotech and Orthogen for example, have already earned market success with their products. Some major players in the German pharmaceuticals and chemicals scene, such as Bayer, Grünenthal, Schwarz Pharma, Madaus, Lanxess, Henkel or Cognis, have established production and research facilities in the BioRiver region, making it one of Europe s prime Medical research and the fight against disease would be inconceivable without the modern methods of biotechnology.
