5 OUTREACH EDUCATION On Tuesday, June 10, 2014 immediately following the Day 1 agenda, McLanes Children s - Scott & White Healthcare will host an Outreach Education Event for the participants of the Summer School Conference. Details to follow. CONFERENCE DESCRIPTION This offering will allow participants to gain insight into some of the healthcare needs of the school age child and adolescent, as well personal and environmental safety in school settings. The conference will be applicable for licensed nurses working in the school, clinic, or acute care environment. In addition to the conference objectives, attendees will have the opportunity to network with peers. CONFERENCE LOCATION The Conference will be held at the Frank W. Mayborn Convention Center, 3303 N. 3 rd St. Temple, TX CONFERENCE OBJECTIVES At the completion of this activity, participants will be able to: Discuss current and suspected infectious disease outbreaks which may impact students in Texas. Describe effective communication / interview / health guidance techniques. Recognize symptoms of depressionand sicidal ideation. Recognize how people escalate to the point of violence. Discuss issues influencing the school nurse s practice such as documentation, federal and state mandates, IHPs and ARDs. Recognize if a student with asthma is in good control. Identify at risk students in the schools setting for physical and sexual abuse. Review medications currently being prescribed and administered in school settings. Summarize strategies to protect adolescents from harmful behaviors. Identify characteristics of cardiac emergencies commonly seen in the school setting. Discuss current trends for treating and managing common neurologic diesease in the school setting. Identify signs and symptoms of acute infections with short life spans. Examine the common causes of menstrual problems such as amenorrhea, dysmenorrhea and menorrhagia. Identify things to do to temporize and stabilize trauma victims (i.e. post school shooting, etc.) Identify emergency preparation strategies including training and supplies. Recognize symptoms of depression and suicidal ideation. Triage eyes for illnesses and injuries.
