4 Prairie View A&M University College of Nursing Graduate Program: Criteria for Admission The applicant must also meet the following criteria for admission for graduate study in the College of Nursing: 1. Submit official transcripts covering all periods of enrollment in institutions of higher education. 2. Satisfactorily complete a basic statistics course and a health assessment course. 3. Possess a Grade Point Average (GPA) of 2.75 on a 4.0 scale in the last 60 hours of coursework toward the undergraduate nursing degree and a minimum GPA of 3.0 (B average) in all prior graduate course work. 4. Submit Graduate Record Examination (GRE) scores that are within ten (10) years. 5. Submit three (3) letters of recommendation from professional nurses, one of which must be from a former nursing faculty. 6. Present a current resume or curriculum vita. 7. Present official documentation of a negative criminal background check and drug screening tests. 8. Complete an individual interview with graduate faculty/committee.

International applicants should allow more time for the application process. Applicants interested in assistantships should apply even earlier and contact the respective departments for information. The deadlines for admission are: Spring October 1 Summer March 1 Fall June 1 Send application and information to the Graduate School: Prairie View A&M University, 6436 Fannin Street, Suite 909 Houston, TX APPLICATION Applicants for admission must hold a Bachelor s of Science in Nursing Degree from an accredited institution or must expect to receive the degree, before matriculating in the Prairie View A&M University Graduate School. An applicant to a degree program will be evaluated for admission when the following are submitted to the Graduate School: (1) the Application for Admission, (2) the $50.00 (non-refundable) application fee, (An additional $15.00 Late Fee is required if application is received past deadline), (3) official transcripts from EACH institution attended, which must be forwarded directly from the institution(s). Transcripts Issued to Student will ONLY be accepted in a sealed envelope. Applicants must include ALL institutions attended regardless of the number or type of credits taken, terms attended, or whether transfer credits are reflected on another transcript, (4) Three letters of recommendation. (5) The Graduate Records Examination (GRE) or the Graduate Management Admissions Test (GMAT) must be taken within the first 12 hours. The test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) for all non-native speakers of English must be taken before you can be admitted to the University. International students must have their transcripts evaluated by: EDUCATIONAL CREDENTIAL EVALUATORS, INC. (Form should be requested from the office of the Graduate School). A notarized Affidavit of Support is required for all International students. International students must submit ALL admission materials before admission. STANDARDIZED TESTS GRADUATE RECORDS EXAMINATION (GRE) All applicants for admission to a graduate degree program (other than business) must submit valid scores (scores obtained within the last 10 years) from the GRE General Test to the Graduate School. The GRE is administered by the Educational Testing Service. The curriculum is designed to teach advanced nurse practitioner students to foster independent and/or collaborative practice for families, individuals, and groups within the context of the community. 14 PV MSN Nurse Education COLLEGE OF NURSING Master of Science The Master of Science in Nursing with a major in Nurse Education prepares baccalaureate prepared nurses to teach in a variety of settings including the teaching of patients and their families, nursing students, nursing staff and health consumers. Through a four course sequence students gain necessary teaching knowledge and skills to prepare them to become nurse educators, a complex role that requires both pedagogical and clinical competency. The nurse education track requires students to complete 12 semester credit hours in nurse education courses as well as 14 semester credit hours of core courses required of all graduate students and 10 semester credit hours of advanced practice core courses. A 120 hour teaching practicum is required of students as well as completing the thesis or non-thesis option consisting of 6 semester credit hours; degree completion requires 42 semester credit hours. 16 PV COLLEGE OF NURSING Master of Science MSN Nursing Administration The Master of Science in Nursing degree with a concentration in nursing administration prepares nurses to serve in a variety of leadership and managerial roles within the health care delivery system. The nursing administration track requires students to complete the MSN program core courses (14 SCH), 12 credits in nursing administration and 9 credit hours of electives in graduate level business courses or health informatics. Business courses provide the student the opportunity to learn business skills that further enhance their administrative backgrounds where health informatics courses provide a background in the area of informatics. The student completes 6 credit hours of either a thesis or non-thesis research option. The course of study prepares nurses to take the American Nurses Credentialing Center's basic certification examination for Nurse Administrators. 18 PVCOLLEGE OF NURSING Post-Master s Certification Nurse Administration The Nurse Administration concentration prepares nurses to serve in a variety of leadership and managerial roles within the health care delivery system. The nurse administration post master s certification track is open to students holding a master degree and desire certification as nurse administrators. Students are required to complete 12 credit hours in nursing administration and 9 credit hours in graduate level business courses or health informatics. Business courses provide the students the opportunity to learn business skills that further enhance their administrative backgrounds where health informatics courses provide a background in the area of informatics. The course of study prepares the students to take the American Nurses Credentialing Center s basic certification examination for Nurse Administrators. Nurse Administration Courses 12 Credits NURS 5403 Adm I Organizational Theory 3 NURS 5413 Adm II Health Care Management 3 NURS 5423 Adm III Health Care Economics & 3 Financial Management NURS 5433 Adm IV - Nursing Administration 3 Role Practicum Nurse Education The Nurse Education post master s certification track prepares nurses to teach in a variety of settings including the teaching of patients and their families, nursing students, nursing staff and health consumers. Through a four course sequence students gain necessary knowledge and skills to prepare them to become nurse educators, a complex role that requires both pedagogical and clinical competency. The nurse education post master s track requires students to complete 12 semester credit hours in nurse education courses and a 120 hour teaching practicum. An additional 10 course credits in Advanced Pharmacology, Advanced Pathophysiology, and Advanced Health Assessment are essential if not previously taken. The course of study prepares the students to take the National League For Nursing Certified Nurse Educator Examination after serving as a nurse educator for two or more years. 19 PVCOLLEGE OF NURSING Post-Master s Certification (cont d) Family Nurse Practitioner The Family Nurse Practitioner post-master s certification track prepares master s prepared nurses to provide primary health care to clients, families and communities. Students take core and advanced practice nursing courses covering theoretical foundations for nursing practice, health systems and models, advanced pathophysiology, advanced pharmacology, nursing research and advanced health assessment. Nurse practitioner specialty courses emphasize the care of women and children, adult, and geriatric patients and their families. The total number of credit hours required is 53, which includes 780 clinical practice hours. The Family Nurse Practitioner concentration requires students to complete, 15 credit hours of specialty courses, 17 credits hours family nurse practitioner. Clinical experiences occur in urban and rural settings. The course of study prepares nurses to take the American Nurses Credentialing Center s certification examination for Family Nurse Practitioner. Also, students must meet the following requirements for admission to graduate study in the Prairie View A&M University College of Nursing: 1. Master of Science Degree in Nursing from a program accredited by the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC) or the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). 2. Basic statistics course completed. 3. Basic course in health assessment completed. 4. Current licensure as a registered nurse in the State of Texas or application for licensure in progress. 5. Minimum Grade Point Average of 2.75 on a 4.0 scale in upper division nursing courses. 6. Two years experience as a Professional Registered Nurse. 7. Three (3) satisfactory professional/academic letters of recommendation. 8. A current resume. 9. Official documentation of a negative criminal background check and drug screening test. 10. An interview is required of qualified applicants. 11. Complete College of Nursing Graduate of Foreign Nursing Schools (COGFNS) admission requirements International Students must have transcripts evaluated by Educational Credential Evaluators, Inc.
