4 PSYCHOLOGY (HONOURS) BACHELOR OF PSYCHOLOGY (HONOURS) Course length 4 years full-time or part-time equivalent, including honours Prerequisites None. No assumed knowledge. SATAC code ATAR Guaranteed entry ATAR NA TAFElink NA BONUS POINTS SEAS, RISAS THIS COURSE > > incorporates the honours-level training that is the minimum requirement for progression toward registration as a psychologist > > provides high-level training in both academic and professional areas > > will prepare you for a range of positions in clinical, educational, organisational or academic settings > > includes a placement providing practical experience in a psychological setting in third year PSYCHOLOGY AT FLINDERS The Bachelor of Psychology (Honours) is one of the most popular degrees at Flinders and is in high demand. It provides high-level training in both academic and professional areas and is one of a few courses in Australia designed to maximise the proportion of psychology topics that can be studied, while also providing a variety of elective options. This course is one of the few in Australia that offers practical placements in third year. These placements provide practical experience in psychological settings. The Bachelor of Psychology (Honours) is one of a range of undergraduate psychology courses at Flinders including the Bachelor of Psychological Science and Bachelor of Behavioural Science (Psychology). Psychology is also available as a major in the Bachelor of Arts. WHAT IS PSYCHOLOGY? Psychology is the science of the mind and the systematic study of behaviour. Psychologists are interested in how we learn, think and interact with others, what motivates our actions, and the role personality and individual differences play in our behaviour. Psychologists work in private practice, industry, business, education, research, universities and the health industry. ACCREDITATION This course is accredited by the Australian Psychology Accreditation Council (APAC) which sets the standards for accreditation of Australian psychology programs. Full membership of the Australian Psychological Society (APS) requires an honours degree in psychology and an accredited postgraduate qualification, or two years of practical experience under a recognised supervision program. STUDY PROGRAM The program comprises a concentrated study of psychology including preprofessional subjects at third and fourth year. In the first three years, almost two thirds of your program will be in psychology or related areas, with the remainder selected from other areas of the University. The compulsory honours year consists entirely of studies in psychology, including a major thesis. Entry to the honours year is conditional upon meeting minimum requirements in the first three years. 2

5 If you choose not to continue with the honours year, you may apply to graduate with the Bachelor of Psychological Science. Topics include introductory psychology, research methods, cognition and learning, personality and social psychology, human development, interviewing and counselling, ethics and professional practice in psychology and a range of psychology electives. Honours year In the honours year you will undertake an honours thesis and core topics in research and practice in psychology, contemporary issues in psychology and applications of psychology. CAREER OPPORTUNITIES The Bachelor of Psychology (Honours) prepares you to work as a professional psychologist in clinical, education, organisation and academic settings. Note that registration as a professional psychologist requires an additional two years of training eg Master of Psychology (Clinical), supervision by a registered psychologist, or equivalent. Potential occupations include human sciences researcher, human resources consultant, graduate researcher, housing advisor, learning and development graduate officer, and assistant psychologist. Potential employers include Australian Bureau of Statistics, De Poi Consulting, Healthcare Management Advisors, Colmar Brunton, Department for Correctional Services, and the Department for Communities and Social Inclusion. The Careers & Employer Liaison Centre provides a diverse range of career services to you during and after your degree. For more information on careers services and potential career opportunities available to graduates of this and other Flinders degrees go to: flinders.edu.au/careers FURTHER STUDY Further study options include Master of Psychology (Clinical), Doctor of Philosophy (Clinical Psychology) and PhD (research). I wasn t sure what I wanted to do after school but psychology appealed to me because of the breadth of topics offered. The most interesting aspect of psychology is that there are many sub-disciplines developmental, cognitive, social, personality and health psychology to name a few. I was surprised at the range of real-world applications from improving eyewitness testimony to managing crowd behaviour at sporting events. I didn t expect that I would be completely fascinated by so many different subjects. I enjoyed the range of topics offered in psychology and the challenge of completing honours. I did feel out of my depth when I was developing my research project but it challenged me in a good way. It set me up for both my career and life in general by teaching me a certain way of thinking an ability to ask questions and test ideas in a systematic way. I m now at the CSIRO, where I started as a research assistant before completing a PhD. The best way to describe my research is to say that I investigate how people make decisions about their food intake and identify strategies to help people make healthier choices. It is very exciting to be part of the vibrant research community at CSIRO. Looking back, there s no way I could have foreseen where I would be now in my career. Nadia Corsini Flinders psychology graduate and behavioural scientist at CSIRO Food and Nutritional Sciences (Adelaide) 3

Graduates are also eligible to apply for honours in their second major sequence. University is a maturing process. When it comes to the workforce, being responsible and self-motivated is a key part of a successful career. The other part of my behavioural science degree at Flinders that helps me every day in my work with youth is the range of topics I studied. The flexibility of the course enabled me to make up my own study program with psychology as a base. I was able to tailor my studies to suit my choice of career. Being able to study topics as varied as sociology, philosophy and criminology allowed me to get different perspectives and ideas. Understanding the basics of how people act, react and deal with trauma is critical to youth work. A lot of the young people I deal with are juvenile offenders and my studies in criminology really help me to understand them. You can really only help them if you find out the reason behind why they re behaving that way. That s what my behavioural science degree gave me.
