3 What is (real) Clinical Psychology? (1) Clinical psychologists aim to: reduce psychological distress and enhance and promote psychological wellbeing (British Psychological Society) i.e. We work with people who are distressed or mentally unwell, and use therapy to try to improve the situation for themselves and the people around them (family, friends, carers, staff) helping people to help themselves Assess Evaluate Formulate Intervene

5 The Application Process (1) Psychology degree: Hull/York University Psychology degree: Any University Application Deadline: 3 rd May 2011 Second year: Apply for clinical modules 1) Application form (online) 2) Two interviews (course staff and service users) Begin modules in final year Graduate with 2:1 or 1 st degree Interviews: 11 th /12 th July 2011 Graduate with 2:1 or 1st Graduate with 2:2 Further study, e.g. Msc, MRes Relevant job: e.g as an Assistant Psychologist, Research Assistant Apply for clinical training through Leeds Clearing House Begin training

6 The Application Process (2) 1. Application form Includes work experience, personal statement demographic details etc Need two references academic and work 2. Interviews Presentation on some research you ve done everyone will do the same so be creative! Two interviews staff and service users

8 Work experience (1) Try to get work experience that will Help you to better understand what Clinical psychology will involve Demonstrate that you can work well with people Demonstrate that you are interested in Clinical Psychology and have undertaken work based on this interest Help you to develop skills that are essential for clinical psychology: listening, empathy, teamwork, leadership Cover the entire lifespan

9 Work experience (2) Voluntary work A few ideas.. Paid work Telephone helplines (Samaritans, Childline, Nightline) MIND Volunteering (at groups, day centres, clinical psychology services) Non-clinical healthcare work, e.g. creating information leaflets in an LD service Care work (e.g caring assistant, nursing home worker, healthcare assistant) Nursing assistant Research assistant Local opportunities

10 Non-Work experience There are lots of things that you can do that aren t direct work experience : Attend conferences and events Read relevant articles/websites/books Help on research projects or do your own (e.g. apply for a research bursary, such as Nuffield or Wellcome) Undertake extra-curricular activities that build useful skills
