1 The University of Oregon -- Master of Nonprofit Management (MNM) Information for Current UO Students All current UO students interested in joining the inaugural cohort of the Master of Nonprofit Management (MNM) program in Fall 2011 should submit an application to the program by June 15, 2011 (see application instructions below). To understand how the MNM degree requirements would work with your current program of study if you are admitted to the MNM program, please see the section below that applies to you. If you are a student in the UO Graduate Certificate in Nonprofit Management program (and not enrolled in another UO graduate program): All existing Certificate requirements that you have taken in the PPPM department so far can be credited towards your MNM degree. In addition, elective credits towards the Certificate that you have taken outside the department will be considered on a case by base basis as to whether they can apply towards the MNM degree. Meet with us to create an individualized degree program. However, keep in mind that you can not earn both the Certificate and the MNM (it s one or the other). If you are a student in the UO Master of Public Administration (MPA) program and you want to add the MNM as a concurrent degree along with your MPA: The concurrent MPA/MNM degrees can be earned with a total of a between 87 and 97 credits (depending on the capstone/thesis option chosen). The concurrent degree plan requires that you complete the core courses for the MPA degree, the core courses for the MNM degree, internships in both the public and the nonprofit sectors, and that you complete either a separate capstone or thesis option for each program, or a joint MPA/MNM thesis. See the attached page for complete details on the concurrent MPA/MNM degree program. If you are a student in the UO Master of Public Administration (MPA) program and you want to switch from the MPA to the MNM: It is likely that much of the MPA coursework that you have completed to date will apply to MNM degree requirements. Meet with us to create an individualized degree program. If you are a student in another UO master s degree program (other than the MPA) and you want to add the MNM as a concurrent degree along with your current degree program: Completing the MNM concurrently with your current degree program requires an individualized concurrent degree plan. Subject to the approval of your current

2 department, concurrent degree plans usually require students to complete the following elements: completion of the required core courses from each degree program, completion of a nonprofit internship, and completion of either a capstone or thesis option unique to each degree program, or completion of a joint thesis that satisfies the requirements of both degree programs. Meet with us to create an individualized degree program. If you received the Graduate Certificate in Nonprofit Management from the UO at some time in the past: The 15 credits of required core classes you completed for the Certificate, as well as any internship credits you completed, will count towards the MNM degree. In addition, elective courses you completed will be considered for inclusion in your MNM degree on a case by case basis. Meet with us to create an individualized degree program. If you received training equivalent to the UO Graduate Certificate in Nonprofit Management from another university: You may be able to waive up to 25 credits of MNM degree requirements if you have completed equivalent coursework elsewhere. The Concurrent MPA/MNM Program The concurrent Master of Public Administration (MPA)/Master of Nonprofit Management (MNM) degree program requires between 87 and 97 credits to complete. The concurrent program requires that students complete the following requirements: (1) The required core of the MNM program and a 4-credit internship with a nonprofit organization. 3 (2) The required core of the MPA program (with three substitutions to the regular MPA core), and a 3-credit internship with a public sector organization. MPA Capstone Requirement (10 credits) PPPM 638-MPA Capstone PPPM 639-MPA Capstone MNM Capstone Option (12 credits) PPPM 607 Nonprofit Management Consultancy (4 credits) Management elective (4 credits)* Management elective (4 credits)* * Management electives to be selected from the list provided for the MNM degree, excluding PPPM 633 Public Management and other courses required for either the MPA core or the MNM core above. MNM Thesis Option (15 credits) PPPM 503 Thesis (9 credits) MNM Exit Project Option (12 credits) PPPM 609 Terminal Project (6 credits) ** Or other research methods course appropriate to thesis topic. (4) Complete one master s thesis to jointly satisfy both MPA and MNM requirements. In this case, the thesis subject matter must relate sufficiently to both nonprofit and public sector issues to be acceptable to both programs. MPA/MPNM Joint Thesis Option (15 credits) PPPM 503 Thesis (9 credits) ** Or other research methods course appropriate to thesis topic.

4 Admission to the MNM Program Applications are currently being accepted on a rolling basis until June 15, Applications will be considered as soon as they are complete and students will be notified right away as to their admission status. The application has the following required elements: If you are currently enrolled as a graduate student at UO, you may use existing reference letters, copies of undergraduate transcripts and GRE scores from the prior graduate admissions file. (1) Applicants must submit an online UO Graduate School Admissions Form to the UO Graduate School. This online application (link below) requires a $50 application fee (by credit card or echeck). Select major code "nonprofit management and then indicate that you are applying to the Master s degree program (MNPM). (2) Applicants should submit the following items directly to the Department of Planning, Public Policy and Management (address below): Official transcripts from undergraduate college or university, and from graduate study, if applicable. GRE or GMAT scores TOEFL scores, if international Personal statement, 2 to 3 pages in length, describing your motivation and preparation for furthering (or entering) a career in the nonprofit sector, and providing a hypothetical blueprint for the next 20 years of your career. Resume detailing past professional and educational experiences Three reference letters, with one or more of the letters by a faculty member.
