Pima Council on Aging (PCOA) is an Arizona nonprofit corporation created by and for the older people of Pima County. Established in 1967, Pima Council on Aging has been and continues to be ahead of its time. PCOA was the first Council on Aging in the State of Arizona and served as the model for the national network of Area Agencies on Aging. PCOA is one of eight Area Agencies on Aging across the state today. In its role as a designated Area Agency on Aging (AAA), PCOA is responsible for planning, coordinating, developing, and delivering vital aging services to assist older persons and their family caregivers to make informed decisions that allow them to live at home or choose a viable option; preserve independence by accepting needed help; receive accurate information and counsel on a range of aging issues of concern.
3 Promoting Dignity and Respect for Aging Caring for People and Community Pima Council on Aging is dedicated to improving the lives of older adults by providing appropriate advocacy, accurate information and timely assistance, and access to affordable direct services. Meals Programs Pima Meals on Wheels delivers more than 3,900 meals per week, helping older adults stay nourished in their homes. Congregate Meals offer affordable meals at 13 local centers on weekdays to help older adults be nourished and socialize. Nursing Clinics at the centers provide health education and blood pressure screenings. Family Caregiver Services Caregiver Specialists assist older adults and their families and caregivers. Family Caregiver Support includes support groups, one-to-one assistance, and training for family caregivers. Respite Services help family caregivers take a break. In-Home Services Case Management coordinates and monitors in-home care plans. Emergency Alert provides emergency response electronic alert services. Housekeeping and Personal Care supports independence in the home. Elder Rights & Benefits Help adults resolve complex issues with agencies, businesses, and government, and assist with completing forms for benefits. Long Term Care - Ombudsmen are frontline advocates for the resident rights of those who are living in elder care facilities. Medicare Assistance includes health insurance benefits counseling for Medicare beneficiaries, caregivers and their families and public presentations to learn about navigating Medicare options and preventing Medicare fraud and abuse. Legal Assistance helps elders access legal services. Healthy Living Programs PCOA offers a series of six evidencebased health promotion programs for adults 60+ about managing one s personal health, staying fit, and maintaining or improving quality of life. Volunteer Services Neighbors Care Alliance Program volunteers enabled over 1,232 older adults to remain at home independently. These grassroots groups logged 73,165 hours of home visits, shopping, transportation for health care visits, and more. Through the Ambassador Program, more than 483 hours and scores of community-based trained volunteers provided information and referrals to older adults and their caregivers in many locations across Pima County.

20 PCOA plays a key role in: Planning Developing Coordinating Delivering A WIDE RANGE OF LONG-TERM SERVICES & SUPPORTS to consumers in their local planning and service area The 50th anniversary of the Older Americans Act, the landmark federal legislation signed into law by President Johnson in 1965, was celebrated in 2015 at PCOA and across the country. Five decades ago, a local gathering of gerontologists, social workers, academicians, regional planners, health and economic specialists, faith-based groups, governmental agencies and non-profit social service groups came together to discuss the needs of older adults in our community. Their vision led to the start of your council on aging. Established in 1967, Pima Council on Aging opened its doors in a tiny office downtown, and in 1973, the Pima Association of Governments designated PCOA as the Area Agency on Aging E.
