Best Western International Success story At Best Western s world headquarters in Phoenix, Arizona, a clustered HP-UX environment is the engine of the chain s service-delivery operation. The HP-UX platform allows Best Western to deliver processing-intensive services with real-time, 24 x 7 responsiveness; enhance service; build customer intelligence; enhance management of customer relationships; and save more than $1 million per year in fees. World s largest innkeeper transforms IT backbone to expand and enhance services The largest hotel chain in the world is Best Western International. Offering more than 300,000 guest rooms in 81 countries and territories, its 4,000 hotels range from a castle built by Napoleon to an inn with its own drive-in movie theater. Since its start more than 50 years ago, Best Western has adhered to a uniquely customer-driven business model: its members are independently owned and operated hotels. Renewing their contracts one year at a time, they receive a host of business services from Best Western. Now, Best Western has an information technology (IT) infrastructure as innovative and customer-oriented as its business. At Best Western s world headquarters in Phoenix, Arizona, a clustered HP-UX environment is the engine of the chain s service-delivery operation, which includes a global reservation system as well as marketing, purchasing, quality assurance, training, and IT support for the chain s 2,400 hotels in North America and 19 affiliates worldwide. AlphaServer Division
The HP-UX platform allows Best Western to deliver an expanding spectrum of processing-intensive services in an environment that provides members with real-time, 24 x 7 responsiveness. For example, Best Western is able to instantly process such dot-com-driven phenomena as bursting a query that demands room availability and pricing data for all member properties in a city. In some locations, this split-second search must span almost 100 hotels. The HP solution also allows Best Western to power the in-house, Web-based booking engine that will soon replace the third-party front end of its reservation system. While enhancing service and saving Best Western more than $1 million per year in fees, the in-house system will also allow Best Western to build customer intelligence, enhance management of customer relationships, and tailor its services. We earn brand loyalty by satisfying our members, says Jerry Skaare, director of architecture at Best Western, a non-profit organization that employs 1,200 staff. As a service organization, we require an IT infrastructure that enables us to deliver high value to our membership. Working with Hewlett-Packard, we ve implemented an extremely reliable, flexible, and efficient IT environment that suits our organization s current and future needs. These needs include providing members and guests with fast access to value-added services that differentiate Best Western as a hospitality provider. But surging transaction volumes from Best Western s expanding electronic channels were already straining the company s existing IT platform a mix of older HP AlphaServer systems running early versions of the HP Tru64 UNIX operating system. Twelve months ago, on a single day we received 350,000 availability requests through our e-channels, says Skaare. On the same date this year, we handled 1.3 million transactions. IT platform switched three months ahead of schedule with fivefold capacity gain Requiring an enhanced and updated IT platform, Best Western decided to entirely re-architect its environment. The company sought and evaluated proposals from diverse IT providers, including Sun and IBM as well as HP. HP offered the best fit with our needs by far, says Skaare. HP proposed a single, total solution integrating clustering, SAN, and server technologies into a highly scalable and available environment all backed by HP s legendary service and support, including the valuable knowledge transfer we received from HP consultants. HP Services professionals helped the Best Western IT team to design and implement the new HP-UX infrastructure, which expands the company s transactionprocessing capacity more than fivefold. Assisted by HP expertise, the team completed the project three months ahead of schedule. 2
We process up to $70,000 worth of reservations every six minutes. Our HP environment virtually eliminates the risk of downtime. Jerry Skaare, director of architecture, Best Western Powering the world s largest and fastest reservation service With its timely transition to the HP-UX platform, Best Western is prepared to lead the hospitality industry in both the size and speed of its reservation services. When we install our Web-based system onto the HP-UX platform in August 2003, we will become the largest reservation operation as measured by volume of room-availability transactions, Skaare says. And with our turnaround time for reservation queries now averaging.28 seconds compared with the industry average of.6 seconds per query, we are already the fastest in an industry that counts speed as a key competitive advantage. Reservation services will be smarter as well as faster, since the HP-UX based infrastructure enables Best Western to track and manage data on customer usage patterns and preferences. For example, Best Western is turning the Europe affiliate s frequent-stay rewards program into a corporate initiative that offers all customers one program with one set of points worldwide. The system will automatically track rewards points, calculate benefits, and notify customers. Global innkeeper gains 24 x 7 fault tolerance and room to grow Spanning two data centers 15 miles apart, Best Western s new HP-UX solution is a fault-tolerant configuration that provides better than 99.9 percent availability. The primary site runs an HP Serviceguard cluster of two HP SD16 Superdome servers, each with 12 CPUs and 24 GB of memory, and a storage area network (SAN) comprising an HP xp512 disk array, an HP 20/700 tape library, and two HP FC-64 Fibre Channel directors. At the second data center is a 12-processor SD16 Superdome system and a redundant xp512 disk array, with an HP 10/180 tape library and HP FC-64 Fibre Channel director. HP StorageWorks Continuous Access XP maintains real-time data replication between the two SANs. This infrastructure runs our core business transactions, which operate on a 24 x 7 basis, says Skaare. We process up to $70,000 worth of reservations every six minutes. Our HP environment virtually eliminates the risk of downtime. And if the system were to go down, recovery takes less than five minutes. As the Best Western IT team brings more functions in-house, they can easily expand the entirely modular and scalable environment. We simply add disks to our SANs, says Skaare, and we can insert up to 64 CPUs in each of our Superdomes. Our current 12-processor Superdome application server just idles along, consuming only about 9 percent of its CPU power while offloading executing database queries to an identically configured Superdome running at 50 percent utilization. Our server and storage configuration gives us quite a bit of headroom. And with HP-UX features such as workload management, we can load-balance the system quite easily. The HP-UX environment will also allow Best Western to enhance customer relationship management by building intelligence that can guide development of new service offerings tailored to specific segments of its customer base. 3
When making a transition such as ours, companies need to know that help is available and when to ask for it. HP has an extensive knowledge base that can provide valuable assistance. They ve been through this before. Tim Schuman, UNIX systems engineer, Best Western Project to transfer hundreds of applications earns rave reviews The Best Western IT team ported its 12 Oracle databases and hundreds of applications onto the HP-UX platform within nine months of receiving the HP systems. Scheduling downtime on weekends, they conducted the project without disrupting operations. The project was huge, says Skaare, but the transition was invisible to users. From the first application that we ported, PeopleSoft Financials, all that our users saw was the immense gain in processing speed. So, from the start, they gave the project rave reviews. The project team was led by Chuck Gibson, director of the Best Western Project Office. They began by winning buy-in on a project plan from all internal stakeholders. The team then met weekly to review progress against the plan. The HP sales representative participated in these meetings and HP Services professionals provided onsite consulting. They transferred knowledge as they worked alongside the Best Western IT team. Some of us were familiar with HP-UX, says Skaare, and with good direction from the HP consultants, the transition was a straightforward process. Several of the HP consultants had already worked with our configuration while it was on the factory test floor, so they hit the ground running. They were very professional, and they were able to immediately transfer valuable skills and knowledge. The Best Western IT team organized a databasecentric software migration, says Skaare. Most of our applications employ an Oracle database and a Microsoft presentation layer. We took one database at a time and ported all the applications that depend on it onto AppWorx production job-scheduling software, which linked them to the database on Tru64 UNIX until it moved to HP-UX. This approach worked very well. We re light-years ahead of where we were. Service and support weighed very heavily in our choice of HP, says Tim Schuman, UNIX systems engineer at Best Western. This transition was a major undertaking achieved by a handful of the technology services personnel. We were swapping our entire UNIX infrastructure. We wanted a bigger payoff than just a bit more speed and space. HP-UX is extremely user-friendly, continues Schuman, and the transition between UNIX operating systems was fairly easy. The database transition was also relatively smooth. But the new SAN hardware and software imposed a gigantic learning curve. The HP consultants were extremely helpful. When making a transition such as ours, companies need to know that help is available and when to ask for it. HP has an extensive knowledge base that can provide valuable assistance. They ve been through this before. 4
Best Western achieves more, spends less with new IT infrastructure Business results World s largest and fastest reservation booking system More than fivefold gain in processing speed in less than a year Reduction of annual expenses by more than $1 million Transfer of ten databases and hundreds of applications within nine months What makes it work Primary data center configuration comprises an HP Serviceguard cluster with two HP SD16 Superdome servers (currently 12 PA-RISC CPUs with 24 GB of memory per system), an HP xp512 disk array, an HP 20/700 tape library, and two HP FC-64 Fibre Channel directors Satellite data center configuration comprises a single HP SD16 Superdome server (currently 12 PA-RISC CPUs and 18 GB of memory, equally divided among three hard partitions) and a redundant SAN, which includes an HP xp512 disk array, an HP 10/180 tape library and one HP FC-64 Fibre Channel director HP rp5470 servers and HP OpenView Omniback II software for managing backups HP StorageWorks Continuous Access XP for data replication and disaster recovery HP StorageWorks Business Copy XP for business continuance HP High Availability Observatory (HAO) for remote monitoring of the Superdome servers HP Services consulting to guide implementation of SAN, HP OpenView Omniback II, and Serviceguard technologies HP consultants guided the Best Western IT team on how to design and manage the SAN to automate failover and optimize Oracle database performance. They also advised the team on the installation of Serviceguard and HP OpenView Omniback II. We ve gained a faulttolerant, scalable configuration that moves us light-years ahead of where we were, says Schuman. In the former configuration, dedicated servers ran each core application and its database. In the new solution, the tiered architecture of the configuration treats databases and applications as separate layers. The SAN s pool of disks supplies data to support any application. Now that they operate an entirely modular, scalable environment, the IT team can readily adapt and change its components, from software to hardware, and scale easily to new platforms. For example, a move from PA-RISC processors to the Intel Itanium architecture is simply a board upgrade. In addition, the Best Western IT team is employing such workload-management strategies as partitioning and load balancing to efficiently meet dynamic business needs. After implementing the new infrastructure, the IT team obtained advice from an HP consultant on fully exploiting its advantages. The HP engineer conducted an expert performance analysis that was both comprehensive and understandable, says Schuman. We gained tools and techniques that enable us to look under the covers of our system and analyze data to optimize performance. Simpler, more productive operations, now and in the future Best Western now has an IT environment that can increase the productivity of all employees, including IT staff. What we ve accomplished by implementing the HP complex puts us in a very good position, says Skaare. We ve laid the groundwork for services that will advance our operations. By simplifying and automating management of systems and data, we ll be able to do more for our members without adding staff. We are proud of what we ve achieved by working with HP, continues Skaare. We ve made a timely, smooth transfer to an entirely new core infrastructure based on the HP-UX operating system. Throughout this process, HP has provided us with more than superior technologies. Our HP sales people and service professionals are fantastic and our HP value-added reseller is like a member of our staff, concludes Skaare. They inform us of new developments, advocate on our behalf, and whenever we need them, they are right here. Our relationship with HP is very much a partnership. 5
