7 WHY ANTIOCH Antioch University Seattle, with its long and proud tradition of social justice, educational innovation, and applied learning is uniquely positioned to meet your needs. Our founding president, Horace Mann, reminded students of the obligation to win some victory for humanity, and since then our students and leaders have made significant contributions to society and the global community. For example, Al Guskin, a current member of the PhD in Leadership and Change faculty and also a former Antioch president and the first chancellor, was a leader among the student group who inspired John F. Kennedy to create the U.S. Peace Corps. Guskin went on to serve in the first Peace Corps group in Thailand. This tradition, plus a core faculty who have real world service experience themselves makes our institution and this program truly one of a kind. We hope you will join us in this exciting venture. WHY SEATTLE Seattle and the Northwest have a configuration of innovative businesses, Not for Profit organizations, and unique institutions. This region is home to some of the largest and most influential philanthropic and service organizations in the world. Gates Foundation, PATH, World Vision, Global Partners, and more than two hundred other NGO or nonprofit organizations, provide a breadth and depth of service, and corresponding employment, that is found in few other regions. Boeing and an entire aerospace industry began in this region, and it is the headquarters of Microsoft, Amazon, and Starbucks, among other global companies. The region also has a reputation for innovative business models, including B Corps, Social Purpose Corporations, and Cooperatives (e.g. REI or Recreational Equipment, Inc.). At the same time, the Seattle area regularly contributes some of the largest numbers of Peace Corps and other volunteers of any region in the country. Because of the region s natural beauty, dynamic economy, career opportunities, and vibrant social and cultural life, Seattle is consistently a top destination for those completing tours of service and seeking to establish themselves in new lives and meaningful careers.
