4 About the CCS The Center for Cultural Studies at the University of Bern is dedicated to the interdisciplinary exploration and study of culture as a continually changing global phenomenon. We specialize in the study of different types of media and genres (film, music, theatre, literature, art, photography) by taking into account diachronic and synchronic aspects of these works. A special emphasis of the CCS, central to the analysis and understanding of culture, is a critical engagement with cutting edge theoretical approaches. We offer three MA programs, a Master s degree in World Arts, a Master s degree in World Literature, and a Master s degree in Editorial Studies. Our students profit from a broad range of courses, which combine structured study and the freedom to explore a variety of perspectives and approaches to culture, cultural memory, identity and values. The aim of the MA programs is to advance students analytical skills and critical awareness, to provide them with a fundamental grounding in critical theory, methodology and research strategies, and to encourage their engagement in the contemporary academic, but also the social and political debates on culture in our globalized world. Our structured PhD program Mediality, Values, and Forms of Cultural Transmission in a Global Context enables doctoral students to write their thesis under comprehensive supervision, and at the same time to obtain further qualifications and establish important connections in the academic world. 4

5 Focal points in research and teaching Four central topics form the core of research and teaching: - inter- and transculturality - mediality and intermediality - processes of canonization in global cultural production - cultural memory; forms of cultural tradition and value transfer Master s degree in World Arts, World Literature or Editorial Studies The CCS offers MA studies in: World Arts The MA program in World Arts combines the study of artistic forms of expression and media in the framework of cultural studies. In order to expand research beyond individual subjects, and geographical or aesthetic borders, a methodological approach based on Cultural Studies is endorsed. World Literature This MA program offers students the possibility of engaging in depth with literary theory, theories of cosmopolitanism and world literature, and the history of world literature. While literature and literary criticism are central, seminars and lectures also include other fields such as ethics and values, as well as film, film theory, and other media. Editorial Studies This MA program encompasses the theory and practice of basic philological procedures (assembling of written records, textual criticism and annotation). In addition, the study program provides students with a broad knowledge of the storage, documentation, constitution and transmission of textual sources for research in the humanities. 5

6 PhD program In our PhD program Mediality, Values, and Forms of Cultural Transmission in a Global Context, doctoral students are encouraged and guided in their acquisition of methods and theory both in their own area of expertise and in regard to their interdisciplinary work. They receive the necessary support for building an academic network; their work is regularly supervised, and they confer in peer groups to discuss work in progress. The integration of research and teaching The CCS cooperates with the institutes of the Philosophical-historical faculty of the University of Bern, and maintains contacts with artists, writers and cultural institutions. Distinguished Lectures Series The CCS regularly invites scholars of international renown to give lectures/workshops. Students are thus offered the opportunity of establishing contact and discussing work in progress with them. Institute for World Literature Summer School The CCS is a sponsor of the Institute for World Literature (IWL), a summer school that takes place alternatingly at Harvard University and at different universities across the globe. This cooperation offers two students per year the opportunity to attend the IWL at half the tuition fees (currently USD 900.-). MA and doctoral students who are interested in World Literature, English or other literatures in a global context are encouraged to send in their applications to Prof. Thomas Claviez.
