Vice President, Associate Chief Nurse: Medicine Patient Services (BCH) Pediatric Oncology Patient Services (DFCI) Boston, MA Position Specification January 2015
Summary Boston Children s Hospital (BCH) and Dana-Farber Cancer Institute (DFCI) are seeking an experienced, strategic and passionate leader to serve as Vice President, Associate Chief Nurse (VP/ACN), Medicine Patient Services (BCH) and Pediatric Oncology Patient Services (DFCI). This is a unique role that provides an opportunity to serve children and families through the combined strength of two world class organizations and highly regarded medical subspecialty programs. BCH and DFCI share physical adjacencies and resources with one another, as well as with Brigham and Women s Hospital (BWH). Brigham and Women s Hospital provides radiation oncology services, nursing and integrative therapy program leadership, and information system assets that interact with the BCH and DFCI programs. All three organizations are Harvard Medical School (HMS) teaching affiliates. BCH and DFCI have been recognized for their shared devotion to exceptional patient/family centered practices and professional nursing opportunities as reflected via successive ANCC Magnet Program designations and re-designations by both organizations. BCH and DFCI also share a deep commitment to the integration of innovation, science and caring practices. Together, they seek to advance academic pediatric and oncology specialty care delivery, research, and educational missions to improve health and healthcare for children. The incoming leader will guide, mentor and support pediatric nursing practice and patient care operations concentrated within a wide-range of clinical subspecialties. The next VP/ACN will collaborate with a talented team distributed throughout an extended inpatient, ambulatory and satellite system of care. The VP/ACN role itself demands a capacity to bridge organizational boundaries to: Shape the next evolution of family-centered collaboration; Advance reliability, safety and patient/family experience; Expand the implementation of healthy work environment practices within nursing and inter-professional teams; Advance nursing science and care delivery operations through research, clinical inquiry and quality improvement; Lead internal/external change, demonstrate inclusivity, and support the interests of a broad range of patient/family, nurse, physician and organizational stakeholders; and Authentically lead a tenured team of academic pediatric nursing and patient care leaders practicing across a wide spectrum of clinical subspecialties including blood disorders/cancer, endocrinology, gastroenterology, nephrology, neurosciences, and pulmonary services. Boston Children s Hospital has a broad array of exceptional resources. It is poised to further extend its historical position as a regional, national and international leader in the care of children and their families. The incoming leader will guide a team of nursing directors, managers, nurse scientists, advanced practice registered nurses (APRNs), clinicians and patient care services team members to shape the future of pediatric medical, neuroscience, and oncology services and nursing practice. 2
Likewise, Dana-Farber Cancer Institute is a National Cancer Institute (NCI) designated comprehensive cancer center serving children and adults with cancer while advancing the understanding, diagnosis, treatment, cure, and prevention of cancer and related diseases. The incoming leader will provide strategic and operational guidance, partnership and support to an interdisciplinary team of pediatric oncology nurse leaders, nurses, nurse practitioners, physicians, administrators and support staff. The Opportunity The position offers a unique opportunity for a tenured nursing leader to impact pediatric medical and clinical subspecialty care and child/family centered practices within two organizations renown for attention to scientific discovery, innovation and nursing excellence. BCH and DFCI seek to identify an exceptional pediatric nursing leader to contribute to a distinguished cadre of pediatric nursing professionals, whose specialized skills and expertise establish them as key members of interprofessional clinical teams within BCH, DFCI, and externally as leaders shaping nursing practice, policy and health outcomes. This role provides a unique opportunity for an experienced nurse and organizational leader to guide the evolution of a substantial set of medical specialty services within Boston Children s Hospital, including the practice of pediatric oncology and blood disorders in concert with the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. This individual will be recognized internally and externally for pediatric nursing practice innovation and have a distinguished reputation as an inspiring, effective, and talented leader in a progressive, research oriented and academically-focused pediatric specialty care environment. The next leader in this role will harmonize nursing science and practice innovations throughout the enterprise across medicine, neurosciences and a range of specialty services including surgery and procedural areas, cardiovascular and intensive care, oncology, and patient care/clinical operations e.g. integrative therapies and Radiation Oncology spanning BCH, DFCI, and Brigham and Women s Hospital (BWH). The Organization Long recognized as one of the largest pediatric health care delivery systems, and the leading pediatric research setting in the world, Boston Children s Hospital also holds a unique position within the most recent 2014 U.S. News and World Report, where it was honored with the distinction of being ranked #1 in eight of the ten Children s Hospital specialties, including each of the subspecialties associated with this role. The organization serves as the primary pediatric teaching setting for the Harvard Medical School and for over 20 affiliated schools of nursing regionally, nationally and internationally. BCH offers a complete range of health care services for children from birth through 21 years of age augmented by transitional services for older adolescents and young adults. BCH is renowned for its clinical innovation, pioneering research, and extraordinary patient care, provided by talented inter-professional teams. It is a 395-bed comprehensive center for inpatient pediatric care with 249 specialized clinical programs that account for more than 580,000 patient visits per year, 25,000 annual inpatient admissions and 27,000 3
surgical procedures. In fiscal year 2013, BCH reported net patient service revenues of more than $1 billion and a positive net operating margin. BCH is also home to the world s largest pediatric hospital-based research enterprise. Current initiatives have attracted over $250 million in annual funding, including more federal funding than any other pediatric healthcare delivery enterprise. More than 1,100 scientists, including nine members of the National Academy of Sciences, twelve physician members of the Institute of Medicine, and nine members of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute comprise their research community. BCH nurses have been recognized at the highest levels of academic nursing, including membership in the American Academy of Nursing (AAN) conferred upon six currently employed exceptional nurse scientists and practice leaders. Boston Children s Hospital and Dana-Farber Cancer Institute have both been designated and redesignated as ANCC Magnet hospitals in recognition of nursing excellence. A leader among leaders in pediatric nursing, quality and safety, and innovation, BCH has been recognized as the only hospital in the country with four gold Beacon Awards across each of the intensive care units from the American Association of Critical Care Nurses (AACN) and a fifth silver Beacon Award in an impatient unit. This designation reflects exceptional performance in evidence-based standards and excellence in patient outcomes, patient safety, interdisciplinary care quality, innovation and family-centered care. The hospital s Emergency Department has also been recognized by the Emergency Nurses Association (ENA) with a Lantern Award for extraordinary practice in the areas of quality, health work environment, evidence-based practice and innovation. Again this year, and for the past six consecutive years, BCH has also been the recognized as one of a small subset of children s hospitals by the Leapfrog Group for exceptional safety, quality and resource utilization outcomes. The organization has embarked on a journey to advance safety and reliability as the basis for all aspects of care delivery and our work with patients, families, and employees. BCH is the only hospital in New England with Level 7 designation for advanced informatics as conferred by the Health Information Management Systems Society (HIMSS). For the 7 th time, the Hospital was named one of the 100 Most Wired hospitals by Hospitals and Health Networks, a publication of the American Hospital Association (AHA). The Most Wired distinction recognizes hospitals and health systems that most effectively apply information technology within five areas: safety and quality, customer service, public health, business operations, and workforce training and performance evaluation. More than a decade ago, BCH was an early adopter of Cerner Corporation s clinical information system and has deployed a range of capabilities to enhance system usability and patient safety. BCH has implemented Epic Systems for patient registration, scheduling and revenue cycle functions. The organization has a focused effort to advance enterprise data warehouse (EDW) and cost accounting information technology capabilities. The organization is strongly committed to the use of analytics and clinical decision support tools to advance quality, safety and operational effectiveness. Senior nursing and patient care services leaders provide substantial enterprise-wide leadership in all areas related to safety, quality, patient/family and employee experience, and as leaders of essential organizational values that place children and their families at the center of all we do. The main campus not only serves as a tertiary and trauma center for the greater Boston area, it is also the number one provider of primary and secondary care for low-income Massachusetts children. BCH 4
serves children and families throughout Massachusetts, New England, the United States and internationally. Approximately 30 percent of patients who receive inpatient care travel from outside the primary service area of Boston and Eastern Massachusetts. The hospital has a full-time medical staff of over 800 specialists. It has 39 ACGME accredited training programs with 172 residents and 267 clinical fellows. Approximately 900 additional residents rotate through Children s each year. The hospital employs over 15,000 staff members, including approximately 2,000 nurses and almost 3,000 associated patient care services clinical team members. The Children s Hospital Trust, the philanthropic resource for Boston Children s Hospital, is one of the most successful and highly regarded hospital foundations in the country. The Children s Hospital Trust consists of 120 staff and 40 Board members and has embarked upon a multi- year campaign to support the organization s important strategic initiatives. A variety of academic, public and private partnerships inform the BCH care delivery process. These partnerships not only benefit the children and families served by the Hospital, but also improve access to care and exceptional quality of care for children throughout Massachusetts and beyond. They include academic affiliations such as Harvard Medical School, research partnerships (including the Harvard Stem Cell Institute, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) Health Sciences & Technology, and the Broad Institute), medical partnerships (including close working relationships with the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, Brigham and Women s Hospital, and Massachusetts General Hospital), network partnerships throughout Eastern Massachusetts, community health partnerships (e.g. the Community Asthma Initiative, and a partnership with the Boston Public Schools), advocacy partnerships, and commercial partnerships guided by the Children s Technology and Innovation Development Office. Boston Children s Hospital has always been a mecca for excellent clinical care, education and ground breaking research. The Hospital leadership also considers diversity a core value. BCH aims to enhance access to the best care, promote and cultivate a diverse workforce, instill a welcoming environment for children, parents and staff, emphasize respect for cultural differences to reduce variation in health outcomes among racial and ethnic groups, and seeks to advance community outreach. The Department The Boston Children s Hospital Department of Nursing has been widely recognized as a national and global leader in the science and practice of pediatric nursing. BCH has been designated and redesignated as a Magnet facility as conferred by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC). The Magnet Recognition Program recognizes health care organizations for quality patient care, nursing excellence and innovations in professional nursing practice. Pursuant to this recognition, BCH seeks to contribute to measurably improve children s health through the application of evidence-based, child and family centered practices. Through transition to practice programs that support initial entry, nurse residencies, nursing science fellowships, global nursing health fellowships and a broad portfolio of continuing clinical education and leadership development opportunities, BCH nursing seeks to contribute to the growth and development of nurse leaders and ultimately to the patients and families they serve. The organization offers a variety of educational and career development opportunities including a voluntary professional advancement program for clinical nurses built upon Dr. Patricia Benner s adaptation of the Dreyfus Skill Acquisition Model, simulation learning, a career lattice program to support the transition of BCH employees from 5
diverse backgrounds moving from existing roles into Nursing, a Nurse Mentorship Program, skill building labs, continuing education, tuition reimbursement, and support for specialty certification. The BCH nursing professional practice model is based on a framework that includes a shared governance structure, opportunities for professional advancement, and a practice environment that matches nurse competencies with patient/family characteristics (e.g. the American Academy of Critical Care Nursing (AACN) Synergy Model, developed in conjunction with University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing Professor and BCH contributing Nurse Scientist, Martha A.Q. Curley, PhD, RN, FAAN. Six currently employed BCH nurse scientists and leaders are members of the American Academy of Nursing (AAN) in recognition of their significant impact within nursing and four current members of the combined BCH, DFCI, and BWH senior nursing leadership teams have been named as Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) Executive Nurse Fellows. In 2013, Boston Children s Hospital established the first of its kind Endowed Chair in Nursing within the Harvard-affiliated hospitals. Named in honor of the prior Senior Vice President, Patient Care Operations and CNO (Eileen Sporing, RN, MSN, FAAN), and established with the support of a second generous benefactor (the Carpenter family) and the Boston Children s Hospital Board of Trustees, the Sporing Carpenter Chair in Nursing provides an important mechanism to advance nursing, inter-professional practice, clinical inquiry, and care delivery innovation going forward. The current BCH Senior Vice President, Patient Care Services and CNO serves as the first incumbent of the Chair and as the Principal Investigator leading fund administration in collaboration with the Associate Chief Nurses and Nursing Patient Care Executive Committee.
