4 Page 4 FROM RABBI S DESK Mah nish tanah ha seder ha zeh? Why is this seder different from all the other seders? Do you want your guests leaving your seder wanting more? Here are a few tips to enhance your Passover meal: 1) First of all, remember this: Your Passover seder is not like the other 363 dinners you eat during the year. A seder is a special meal in which we reconnect with our Jewish past. It is a meal full of conversation dealing with theological, philosophical, and Jewish matters. Therefore, so as not to have your guests chomping at the bit for the matzah ball soup, put hors d oeuvres out on the table like nuts, raisins, dips, vegetables. Allow your guests to nosh! 2) When you break the middle matzah, one half you put back on the plate, while the other half, known as the afikomen, is hidden. For the seder to come to an end, the afikomen must be found and put back together with its other half what was once broken must be made whole again! A great discussion question could be: What can we do to fix a broken world? like to recommend these two books that will serve as excellent resources, and yes, they are available on line or at your nearest bookstore: a) Creating Lively Passover Seders published by Jewish Lights Publishing b) A Different Night Haggadah, as well as The Leaders Guide to A Different Night Haggadah - both published by Shalom Harman Institute **just a note, this Haggadah is filled with activities, stories, and discussion points. It will give you and your guests material for years to come. I highly recommend this Haggadah. Please, get rid of the Maxwell House Haggadah! Please call or me if you have any questions. May you and your family have a wonderful Passover! Rabbi Richard S. Chizever rabbic@bellsouth.net 3) Four Children: wise, wicked, simple, & one that doesn t know how to ask the question. These four children are all stages of maturation. Or, the four stages of American Jewry. The characteristics of these children are great starting points for discussion. 4) Ten Plagues: You can ask, If God is omnipotent (all powerful), why does God need ten plagues (one would have been sufficient)? Or if you have children at the table, write out the ten plagues on ten separate cards. Place them in a bag and have the children randomly pick out a card and act out that plague. Let the other guests guess the plague! 5) Elijah s cup. A great tradition for filling Elijah s cup is having everyone pour a little bit of their wine into his cup. Why? Because all of us have a part in bringing about the coming of Elijah the prophet who announces the messiah. A great question to ask is, What can we do to bring about the messianic era? Or how can we make the world a better place (tikkun olam)? These are just a few ideas to get the conversation flowing. Additionally, I would also Millefiori produces fragrances for interiors. 10 Page 10 MIDDLE EAST THE VALUE OF AN OPINION by Salomon Gold On March 9th of this year, at the time that US Vice-President, Mr. Joe Biden, was on a five-day visiting mission to Israel and two days after agreeing to indirect talks with the Palestinian Authority, Israel announced the approval for the construction of 1,600 new homes in East Jerusalem. This announcement has provided the enemies of the State of Israel with enough ammunition to continue their attack and even friendly people in the media have considered the coincidence with the visit by Mr. Biden as irresponsible or an insult, a slap in the face both to the Vice-President as well as to the United States. On Sunday, in an article in the New York Times, Mr. Tom Friedman, a friend of Israel, wrote that Mr. Biden, rather than continuing with his scheduled visit with Mr. Netanyahu, should have turned around and gone back to his plane and return to the U.S. in order to teach the Israelis a lesson. Also, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, did not mince w o r d s f o r h e r s t r o n g c o n d e m n a t i o n o f t h e announcement and demanded cancellation of the project at Ramat Shlomo in East Jerusalem. All critics seem to have either forgotten or discounted Israel s assertion that Jerusalem is the State Capital, that will always remain undivided and that everyone of its citizens, either Jew or Arab, can build anywhere in the city. But what do we, who mostly know what little we know by reading or listening to the news, think about this whole incident? What is our opinion? Did Israel do wrong? Do we have enough facts to formulate a correct and balanced opinion? Do we have the right to formulate an opinion? The truth is that we form our opinion based on what we read on the news or watch in our TVs. We have learned to recognize the friends and the enemies of Israel and therefore, value and trust some opinions better than others. But just as we may lack full knowledge of all facts that prompted, as in this case, Israel to make such decision and to announce it when and how they did, for most part neither does the media, who is guided with the principle of coming out with the news first and finding the facts later. We have to trust the wisdom of the Israeli government, for they know, they have to know better than we do, better than all newspaper writers, news anchors or news sources know, of what is best for the State of Israel. And we have to trust and support their actions and realize that until we have all the facts and until we live in the State of Israel, we have no right to have, much less to express an opinion. You may argue that you have such right and you might be right. But I think you don t. And that is my opinion. But I do have the right to be offended by Mrs. Clinton's demand towards a sovereign nation, the only democratic nation in the Middle East, as is the State of Israel. One does not make demands from a loyal friend. 21 Page 21 MA OT CHITTIN AT YOUR SEDER The Seder begins with the following declaration: LET ALL WHO ARE HUNGRY COME IN AND EAT WITH US. This is recited when our door is closed and no one can hear our invitation to the poor. So, why do we make a mockery at the very start of the Seder? This question was asked in the 9th century to Gaon Nutranai (leader of the Babylonian Jewish community). He replied that originally this declaration was publicly made in the market place and in synagogues when there were peaceful relations between Jews and non-jews. However, when pogroms, expulsions, and inquisitions increased, the custom of public invitations to a Seder ceased. Ma-ot Chittin -- literally money for wheat -- was established to assure that the poor will have Pesach food and ample wine to celebrate their Seder. Thus Ma-ot Chittin has become a treasured custom from the earliest days of Jewish history. MA-OT CHITTIN THERE ARE POOR JEWS IN OUR AREA. THERE ARE POOR JEWS IN ISRAEL BY CONTRIBUTING TO THE MA-OT CHITTIN FUND, YOU WILL SHARE IN THE MITZVAH OF ENABLING THE POOR JEWS TO BUY FOOD AND WINE. THEY, TOO, WILL HAVE A HAPPY AND KOSHER PESACH.
